Labradors have been the No. 1 most popular dog breed in America for close to three decades. It’s not hard to understand why – Labradors are playful, energetic, smart, and friendly. They make great companions for individuals and families and generally get along with children and other pets.

Although high-energy, Labradors are laidback and easy going, unfazed by the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Bred originally to be working dogs, their intelligence makes them a great option for service or therapy dogs.

We do not even know where to begin when it comes to how grateful we are for Dog Training Elite. Before attending the two week day camp, Hoosier, our year and a half golden retriever mix, struggled significantly with meeting new people. He would bark and lunge at them in an aggressive manner. The two week camp provided Hoosier (and us) with the tools for interacting with new people. This is just the beginning of his training as he will continue to attend weekly group sessions that come with the two week day camp package (which is amazing). We cannot say enough good things about all the trainers here. They have done such an incredible job with Hoosier, and we are so thankful for them.

Joshua arrived as planned to start our puppy program and our first session was great. He gave us an overview of what the first training session was going to be covered, demonstrated puppy command (off, crate, using the leash, name recognition, using training treats) addressed our questions and coached us on training dos and don’ts. Overall it was a great first lesson and we are looking to the next puppy training session.

Josh was fantastic. Everything I had hoped to get out of dog training was achieved and he gave me all the tools and advice to do it. And he was very patient when we were doing the first few sessions and my dog was aggressive.

I have just been so impressed by the trainers, staff, and coaching at Dog Training Elite! Doug, the owner, personally came out to my house and met my dog Lola to see if she had a good demeanor for service dog training. Since then, we have completed Elite Training Camp with Lola (a full obedience training camp) and had one in home session with Elijah. The staff is so incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, smart, and supportive of Lola and our family. We are starting group classes soon to get Lola ready for service animal training, and I just know we will be seeing the same excellence as before. It is very worth the time, effort, and money to have your dog trained with this team.

Anika, Josh, Sonya and the rest of the team did a great job during our dog's two weeks of training. We look forward to the group classes and to watching our dog even further master the commands. We highly recommend Dog Training Elite. Josh came by a few weeks after the class ended to work with our dog. He was very patient and taught us a lot of things that will help our dog master his commands. We look forward to our continued relationship with Dog Training Elite.

We successfully completed 2 weeks of camp and just had our first of two at home visits. The amount of change we have seen in our dog is just remarkable. He's following commands so well, is much more attentive and enjoys the 'work' he's been doing. I really can't say enough great things about the trainers! Josh, Anika and Elijah were all fabulous with our dog, as were all the other trainers and the whole team! The communication from everyone from my very first panicked email to the team looking for guidance, to the long call with the owner Doug to get a game plan together, and the quick placement into the camp all helped put our mind at ease. And once he started camp, we received all the necessary tools and equipment for our dog, detailed daily Google drive videos of his progress with instruction and printable training recaps of each lesson. And review of each days progress with the trainers at pickup for us to practice. This level of engagement, along with the genuine love of dogs, care and can-do spirit of all the trainers and team have exceeded all of our expectations!! We are so happy with the outcome of the training, and know we have a lot more to go to continue to make his training second nature, but this is an excellent program. Plus, the ability to bring him to weekly group classes on Saturdays is also a huge comfort to us! Knowing we have the support and resources of Dog Training Elite Carmel/Fishers every step of the way is just wonderful!

What Makes Labradors Unique?

There are many reasons to love Labradors. Here are just a few:

  1. Labradors Love the Water: You may have already known this fact, because Labs are pretty famous for loving the water. They’re actually made for it! A Lab can use their thick tail – sometimes referred to as an “otter tail” – as a powerful rudder. They also have wide, webbed feet to help them swim fast and waterproof coats that help them remain comfortable even in cold water.
  2. They were Bred as Hunting Dogs: Initially, Labs were bred as duck retrievers, and then later as game-hunting companions. They tend to excel in retriever field trials and retriever hunting tests. They’re incredibly versatile as sport dogs, excelling in agility, rally and obedience sports.
  3. Labs Come in Three Colors: Labrador coats come in three colors – black, yellow, and chocolate.
  4. Labs can do Almost Anything: Their intelligence, energy, and affectionate nature makes them a popular choice for service and therapy dogs, as well as for search and rescue teams, and bomb and drug detection. Suffice to say, all Labradors are very good dogs who do very good jobs.

Breed Specific Tips & Tricks

Keeping Your Labrador Happy and Healthy

Although Labradors are famously laid back and friendly, that doesn’t mean they don’t require attentive care. If you’re considering adopting a Labrador, or you already have one and want to learn more about how to keep your pup happy and healthy, consider the following:

  1. Labradors Need Plenty of Exercise: Although Labs are easy going, they need plenty of exercise – even up to two hours a day. This can be made up of long walks, training sessions, playing fetch, or going to the dog park. Though it’s important to make sure they get enough exercise, you also need to be careful you don’t let your dog overdo it, especially as a puppy while their joints and bones are still growing.
  2. Groom Your Lab Weekly: Labradors have short, smooth coats that are prone to shedding. Combing them weekly with a comb or bristle brush, or combing daily during shedding season, can help keep shedding under control. Make sure you have a good vacuum!
  3. Manage their Diet: As big, energetic dogs, Labs need to eat a lot – but they can be prone to putting on pounds, as well. Follow the recommended amounts on dog food packaging, or consult with your vet.
  4. Make sure Your Labrador Gets Lots of Attention: Labradors are very social. Socialization with other dogs is important, so trips to the dog park, doggy play dates, or group training classes at Dog Training Elite can be beneficial for both you and your dog. If your Lab has to be home without you for long stretches of time, be sure to have stimulating dog toys, puzzles, and chew toys available for them, and consider hiring someone to check on and play with them during the day.

The Dog Training Elite Carmel / Fishers training method is based around classical conditioning. Classical conditioning means developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands, so when you say “sit,” your dog will sit automatically. Labradors respond especially well to this technique and our trainers will focus on positive reinforcement training for your Labrador puppy.

While all dogs share qualities of kindness, loyalty and intelligence regardless of breed, Dog Training Elite Carmel / Fishers recognizes that every dog is an individual and may require different training methods. We stand out by taking into consideration what breed your dog is when making training goals.

Regardless of your dogs specific breed. Dog Training Elite Carmel / Fishers can help you and your pup overcome any obstacle related to obedience and socialization. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.
