What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is trained to provide emotional support and comfort to people in need, often visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. These dogs must be friendly with strangers, able to handle high levels of distraction, and understand personal boundaries like not jumping, licking, or mouthing. With proper training, therapy dogs can bring joy and emotional relief to those they interact with, offering companionship in stressful environments.

At Dog Training Elite, we offer programs to help your dog become a certified therapy dog. As a leading therapy dog trainer in Carmel / Fishers, IN, we focus on developing the right temperament and skills so your dog can confidently provide comfort and support in various settings. With our professional guidance, your dog can become a valuable source of emotional care and connection for individuals in need.

How Does a Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

While the companionship your dog brings you may inspire you to share that with others, not every dog is suited to be a therapy animal. Beyond a friendly, loving personality, several important qualifications must be met for a dog to be considered for therapy work:

  • Age: Puppies are typically too energetic and lack the focus to be therapy dogs.
  • Obedience: A therapy dog must follow commands reliably. Dogs that have completed obedience training with Dog Training Elite have the solid foundation needed to begin therapy dog training.
  • Social Skills: Therapy dogs need to naturally enjoy meeting new people and must handle being petted and approached by strangers without anxiety. Their ability to remain calm and friendly, even in unfamiliar situations, ensures they can provide emotional support to those they interact with.

We cannot emphasize enough how much we recommend DTE. We had known for sometime that we wanted extensive training for our dog struggling with anxiety but always felt hesitant about an extended board and train. When we learned about DTE’s two week camp it was exactly what we were looking for. Two weeks of consistent training that allowed us to still pick up our pup at the end of each day. We were reassured that we made the right decision when our pup was jumping out of bed and excited to get into class every morning. One of the biggest things that stood out to us throughout this program was the level of communication and expertise shown by staff. Everyday at drop off and pick up we were welcomed to share details of our pups performance at home and (more importantly) ask questions. The training staff was always willing and happy to help. Not once did we feel rushed. In addition, we received progress updates at the end of each day and advice for training at home. My personal favorite items were the training videos we received each day. It brightened my day that anytime I started to miss my pup, I could check for a video to see how he was doing with new skills and detailed instructions for me as his handler. We are extremely proud of the progress our pup made within the two weeks and look forward to continuing his training with his in-home lessons and group classes. Thank you DTE trainers for loving, teaching, and caring for our little guy.

Doug, Elijah, and the DTE team exceeded all expectations. They made the training process fun and enjoyable for both me and my dog. I opted for the in-home program followed by group classes to reinforce the training. My biggest takeaway was to incorporate the teachings into a game, keeping my dog engaged and encouraged. We're excited to continue working with the team and highly recommend them for anyone seeking a professional dog training service.

After researching many training options for our 5-month-old miniature schnauzer, we contacted Dog Training Elite Carmel/Fishers. They conducted a free in-home assessment to understand our goals for our puppy. We made the right choice! Our puppy enjoyed the 2-week training camp, and we will continue to take group classes and pursue their therapy dog training for her. Each trainer was loving and knowledgeable! I felt very supported by all of the staff. They give you the tools and resources to continue working on behavior at home. Our puppy, Charli, was excited to go to camp every single day!

The level of knowledge is amazing and I could not ask for a better team to work not only training the dogs, but the owners as well. The compassion and generosity experienced was so wonderful. I will be recommending DTE to everyone!

Absolutely AMAZING. The entire staff is very well versed in all aspects of training your furry family member. Currently, Liberty and I are working towards certifying as a service dog. The techniques taught, when used, WORK!!! Having a well disciplined furry family member reduces stress, gives companionship and brings extreme joy to each day of your life. UPDATE: Liberty is fully certified! Having the ability to take her everywhere has truly improved the quality of life!!! I could not have done it without the staff and guidance! Thank you!

Well worth every penny. It's the training, the communications, the daily videos, the field trips, the socialization, the aftercare, the numerous lifetime training, and the meet-ups. Well worth the happy relationship you have with your pet and the community.

Absolutely thrilled with Dog Training Elite! Our young Chocolate Lab just completed the two-week camp, and we couldn't be happier with the results. From the moment we dropped her off, it was clear she was in the best care. The trainers are incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and truly passionate about what they do. Georgie is much more obedient. We saw significant improvements in her socialization skills and basic commands, and the personalized attention she received made all the difference. The training techniques are easy to follow and effective, making learning a fun experience for her. We now feel confident in our ability to continue her training at home, thanks to the tools and strategies provided by the team. If you're looking for a comprehensive, caring, and effective training program, I highly recommend Dog Training Elite. Georgie is a great puppy, and we owe it all to their amazing camp! Thank you for everything!

I am BLOWN away by DTE’s staff, compassion, and overall attitude towards dogs and their families. These people want what’s best and PRACTICAL for your dog. I chose boot camp and am thrilled I did. My pup, Gordo, has responded so well to training it’s remarkable. With boot camp he gets UNLIMITED group classes throughout his lifetime. There’s really only one choice for dog training in Indy, and Dog Training Elite is it.

I would recommend DTE to anyone and everyone! They have done such an amazing job with Moxie and she loves all the trainers here so much! We both look forward to group classes and continuing to learn. She is almost ready to be a service dog! I was very weary of the training collar at first, but it is nothing like a shock collar and works wonders! If you are in need of any kind of training - GO SEE DTE! They will change your life!

Dog Training Elite has helped with every part of dog life: finding the right breed for service work, helping me select a reputable breeder, and even selecting the puppy. And the dedication to training and consultation is fantastic! I can’t say enough about the care and expertise from the whole staff. They really care about the dogs and about training we humans as well. My dog is only 7 months old and our bond is wonderful because of DTE guidance. Everyone is impressed at how well she behaves at such a young age, and how happy she is too! Great team. Thank you DTE

We have had the best experience with and seen the biggest improvements in our dog’s behavior and obedience than in the past with multiple trainers. From one-on-one sessions to group training, Elijah & Josh have welcomed all questions. From our first meeting with Doug, I have been impressed with this company’s professionalism. They have gone out of their way to ensure we have everything we need to be successful in training our pup, Sophie. Highly recommend Dog Training Elite!

My dog went through DTE’s 2 week day camp program and came out a much more confident and well mannered dog. The main reason for sending him to camp was to help with his dog reactivity and confidence. The weekly group lessons have been a huge part of his continued success. The entire staff at DTE is extremely knowledgeable and truly cares about helping you to reach your training goals.

We had a great experience with DTE and the trainers! Josh and Elijah are both incredible! The level of knowledge and care they bring to each training session made it easy and less daunting of a task to train our older rescue. Couldn’t be happier with the results and love the value add of group classes that we will continue to go to every chance we get. Our pup has come so far because of DTE!

INCREDIBLE experience! By the end of day 3 in their facility camp, Theo is following commands even when he is taking a break from his collar. They share videos of the commands they teach on a daily basis and provide daily progress notes. All of the trainers are so patient and passionate about what they do and take the time to explain and answer all questions. Theo absolutely loves going back every morning. Completely blown away and we still have 1.5 weeks of training left.

Benefits of Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs have a profound impact on individuals’ emotional and physical well-being. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs can improve a patient's mood, reduce stress, and even lower pain levels during hospital stays or medical treatments. Their calming presence provides comfort and relief in challenging moments.

Children, in particular, often respond well to therapy dogs. The companionship and playful interaction of a therapy dog can motivate children to engage more fully in treatments, helping them overcome fear or reluctance. With a therapy dog by their side, children tend to feel more optimistic and less anxious.

Beyond medical settings, therapy dogs also foster social interaction, especially in autism and mental health communities. These dogs offer non-judgmental companionship and serve as a bridge for individuals who may struggle with social connections. By reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety, therapy dogs offer their owners comfort and companionship that enhances the overall quality of life.

ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals

What's the Difference?

Animals that provide assistance and companionship can be classified into three main groups: service animals, emotional support animals (ESAs), and therapy animals. Each has different responsibilities, training requirements, and legal protections. Knowing the differences can help you choose the right type of support for a disability, emotional needs, or therapy purposes.

Here are the defining features of each type:

Service animals are trained to help individuals by performing tasks that meet their specific needs, such as:

  • Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
  • Reminding owners to take medication
  • Waking someone who is having a nightmare

Service dogs are highly valued in the mental health and disability community and are protected under ADA laws, allowing them to accompany their owners anywhere. At DTE, we provide specialized training for service dogs that assist individuals with autism, diabetes, and PTSD.

The key difference between ESAs, therapy dogs, and service dogs is that service animals are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means they are allowed to go anywhere their owner goes. ESAs and therapy dogs do not have the same protections as service dogs, and public places can set their own rules about allowing them.

ESAs are prescribed by licensed mental health professionals to help individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. These animals provide emotional support simply by being a comforting presence. Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not trained to perform specific tasks related to their owner's condition.

ESAs can be of any breed or age, and while they do not require the same level of training as service dogs, many owners choose to seek additional training. This can help strengthen the bond between the owner and the animal and improve the ESA's ability to provide consistent emotional support in different situations.

Therapy animals provide comfort and emotional support to individuals in need. They are not trained to assist a single person but are instead taught to be well-behaved and sociable around various groups of people. These animals help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness for those they visit.

Unlike service animals, therapy animals are not required to perform specific tasks. Their calming presence is what makes them valuable in therapeutic programs.
