Potty Training Is Where Obedience Begins

Potty training is the first step in developing a well-behaved dog. It’s not just about avoiding accidents; it’s about shaping a confident, well-mannered dog you can enjoy wherever you go.

When a mature, healthy dog understands when and where to go, they also begin to understand structure, boundaries, and how to follow through. Starting early is important, and the sooner puppies are potty broken, the easier it is for them to learn advanced obedience skills.

What If It’s an Older Dog?

Potty challenges don’t just affect puppies. Some older dogs never got the right start, and others may be adjusting to a new home or routine, or marking territory.

Before jumping into training, we always suggest ruling out health issues like:

  • Bladder stones
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Incontinence or age-related conditions

If your dog gets the all-clear from the vet, then it’s time to look at behavior. Our trainers will help you identify what’s going on and create a realistic plan to turn things around.

Many of our clients are amazed by how quickly their older dogs adapt once they understand the expectations. You’re not stuck—you just need the right tools and support.

When my husband and I rescued our 11 month old shepherd/malinois mix, we knew he would need great training. After researching and doing an evaluation with Doug, we knew the best option would be DTE. From his very first day, we could tell Maverick thrived in camp and he started looking forward to it everyday. All of the trainers were personable, and had no problem answering all of our questions. We can’t wait to start taking him to group classes and continuing his training. Since starting he is more well mannered, knows his place, and is more confident. Thank you DTE for taking such great care of our boy 💛

I highly recommend them! We had a puppy that was super mouthy due to teething and high energy. They worked with Ollie and got him responding to our commands and understanding his boundaries. They were always very open to answering all of our questions (we had a lot!) I cannot say enough how over and above they went to make sure we felt comfortable and had all our concerning scenarios covered over the duration of camp. The at home visit was amazing and helped reinforce his boundaries.

Doug and the staff were great for our dog Douglas! We would highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone with a high energy, highly reactive dog such as ours. They took great care and Douglas has responded very well to the training. He looked forward to training every day and was exhausted by the end of the day. Overall a great experience and highly recommended.

The team here is absolutely amazing. We signed up our Border collie pup Sky for the in-home puppy training and the two week intensive camp. The feedback each and every session has been incredible and our pup is thriving with the structure!! She still needs some reinforcement but with the option of participating in the group classes we can't wait to get her back in class. This is an investment that really does take a time commitment. I would recommend this program to anyone looking with zero hesitation. Thank you to the entire team!!

We had a wonderful experience with DTE! The trainers were knowledgeable, loving and patient. My one year old German Shepherd learned a lot and so did I. Thank you!

I cannot recommend DTE enough. In the span of 10 days I had a new dog, well behaved and happy. The facilities are clean, the methods are solid, but more importantly the people that work there are incredible. There’s a very evident love for dogs radiating off of all of them, and I never had any reservations about leaving my dog in their care all day. Dog training being 30% training the dog and 70% training the owner, they provided helpful methods for reinforcing and continuing to progress in the commands he learned while there. They are worth every penny.

We cannot emphasize enough how much we recommend DTE. We had known for sometime that we wanted extensive training for our dog struggling with anxiety but always felt hesitant about an extended board and train. When we learned about DTE’s two week camp it was exactly what we were looking for. Two weeks of consistent training that allowed us to still pick up our pup at the end of each day. We were reassured that we made the right decision when our pup was jumping out of bed and excited to get into class every morning. One of the biggest things that stood out to us throughout this program was the level of communication and expertise shown by staff. Everyday at drop off and pick up we were welcomed to share details of our pups performance at home and (more importantly) ask questions. The training staff was always willing and happy to help. Not once did we feel rushed. In addition, we received progress updates at the end of each day and advice for training at home. My personal favorite items were the training videos we received each day. It brightened my day that anytime I started to miss my pup, I could check for a video to see how he was doing with new skills and detailed instructions for me as his handler. We are extremely proud of the progress our pup made within the two weeks and look forward to continuing his training with his in-home lessons and group classes. Thank you DTE trainers for loving, teaching, and caring for our little guy.

Doug, Elijah, and the DTE team exceeded all expectations. They made the training process fun and enjoyable for both me and my dog. I opted for the in-home program followed by group classes to reinforce the training. My biggest takeaway was to incorporate the teachings into a game, keeping my dog engaged and encouraged. We're excited to continue working with the team and highly recommend them for anyone seeking a professional dog training service.

After researching many training options for our 5-month-old miniature schnauzer, we contacted Dog Training Elite Carmel/Fishers. They conducted a free in-home assessment to understand our goals for our puppy. We made the right choice! Our puppy enjoyed the 2-week training camp, and we will continue to take group classes and pursue their therapy dog training for her. Each trainer was loving and knowledgeable! I felt very supported by all of the staff. They give you the tools and resources to continue working on behavior at home. Our puppy, Charli, was excited to go to camp every single day!

Everyone who works at DTE is of the utmost professionalism and courteousness. The level of knowledge is amazing and I could not ask for a better team to work not only training the dogs, but the owners as well. The compassion and generosity experienced was so wonderful. I will be recommending DTE to everyone!

Absolutely AMAZING. The entire staff is very well versed in all aspects of training your furry family member. Currently, Liberty and I are working towards certifying as a service dog. The techniques taught, when used, WORK!!! Having a well disciplined furry family member reduces stress, gives companionship and brings extreme joy to each day of your life. UPDATE: Liberty is fully certified! Having the ability to take her everywhere has truly improved the quality of life!!! I could not have done it without the staff and guidance! Thank you!

Well worth every penny. It's the training, the communications, the daily videos, the field trips, the socialization, the aftercare, the numerous lifetime training, and the meet-ups. Well worth the happy relationship you have with your pet and the community.

Absolutely thrilled with Dog Training Elite! Our young Chocolate Lab just completed the two-week camp, and we couldn't be happier with the results. From the moment we dropped her off, it was clear she was in the best care. The trainers are incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and truly passionate about what they do. Georgie is much more obedient. We saw significant improvements in her socialization skills and basic commands, and the personalized attention she received made all the difference. The training techniques are easy to follow and effective, making learning a fun experience for her. We now feel confident in our ability to continue her training at home, thanks to the tools and strategies provided by the team. If you're looking for a comprehensive, caring, and effective training program, I highly recommend Dog Training Elite. Georgie is a great puppy, and we owe it all to their amazing camp! Thank you for everything!

What Works: Potty Training Tips from Real Trainers

Have you ever wondered how to potty train a puppy? Here are a few of the tried-and-true techniques our trainers use every day to set dogs up for success (and that you can start using right now):

Dogs thrive on routine. Take your puppy to the same quiet area each time they go out, and keep them on a leash to help them focus on the task at hand.

Trainer Tip: Use the same door and same path each time. It helps your pup learn the rhythm and makes success more predictable.

Puppies need frequent breaks. As a general guideline, take them out:

  • After naps
  • After play or excitement
  • Immediately after eating or drinking

The goal is to stay ahead of the accident—not scramble to clean it up after.

Many families tell us that crate training changed everything. And they’re not wrong.

Dogs instinctively avoid going to the bathroom where they sleep—but only if the crate is the right size. Too big, and they might go in one corner and sleep in another. Just right, and they’ll learn to hold it. Always take your dog outside immediately after letting them out of the crate to reinforce good habits.

Pick a simple phrase like “go potty” or “do your business,” and say it when your dog is going. Eventually, they’ll associate the phrase with the action.

This might feel like a small thing now, but it will be helpful in the long term, especially for service dogs. Many of our service dog families tell us that teaching this cue makes things much smoother on busy mornings, while traveling, or before entering public spaces.

We don’t mean “good dog” and a pat. We mean celebrate your puppy’s success like you just won the lottery. Clap, cheer, and praise enthusiastically, especially in the early days.

Positive feedback builds the confidence your pup needs to repeat the behavior again and again.

Watch for signs like sniffing, circling, whining, or suddenly going quiet. These are your cues to grab that leash and head out fast.

Interrupting the behavior early is one of the most effective ways to build new habits and reduce (and eventually eliminate) indoor accidents.
