Labradors have been the No. 1 most popular dog breed in America for close to three decades. It’s not hard to understand why – Labradors are playful, energetic, smart, and friendly. They make great companions for individuals and families and generally get along with children and other pets.

Although high-energy, Labradors are laidback and easy going, unfazed by the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Bred originally to be working dogs, their intelligence makes them a great option for service or therapy dogs.

I am so thankful for the training, guidance, and support Justin, Loghin, and their team have provided me as I raise Beaufort, my English Springer Spaniel. It has been a long time since I have reared a puppy, and I want to be sure I get it right. I want Beaufort to be the kind of dog people love and want to be around. And I want to give him the best possible life I can give him, and the team at Dog Training Elite is helping me do just that. Thank you and God Bless!

We absolutely LOVED working with the trainers at Dog Training Elite! We started 1-on-1 sessions when my Lab, Honey, was 16 weeks old and it was a major game changer! She went from biting all the time and being hard to manage to THE BEST girl. We worked with Sydney for most sessions, and Sydney understood Honey and gave such helpful guidance and advice. I needed just as much training as Honey, and Sydney was always so patient and encouraging. This was the best decision that I could have ever made to grow my bond and trust with Honey. I’m forever grateful for the support from this team and highly recommend working with them!

Scott and Jen are the best! Training was at our house and our toy poodle named Sophie bonded with Jen immediately. She was fantastic. We had an amazing experiencing with DTE ! Our golden (Remus) did the platinum and is about to start psychiatric training. 10/10 recommend and cannot thank the staff enough ! Cheyanne and Chelsea are amazing with evaluating and helping you choose which program would be the best fit for you and your companion’s needs along with answering any/ all questions you may have . Logan and the other trainers that works with Remus , are super nice, helpful, and offer great feedback on your companion and ways to help you and your dog succeed in their program and dogs health! We saw an immediate difference in Remus within just 1-2 days of him training in the classes and it has boost his confidence level . He looks happier and shows a more confident and prouder stance in how he represents himself. In addition, the group classes and outings with the pack make it a great learning experience and welcoming to participate no matter where you are at training wise with your furry companion. We couldn’t be more proud and happy to be part of the DTE pack !!!

We couldn't be happier with the results Nick helped implement in training our goldendoodle. Our dog needed obedience training and the improvement has been amazing - she is calmer, more responsive, and just better behaved all around. We were especially impressed that Nick trained her without treats due to her pancreatitis risk. You can tell that he really understands dogs and knows how to adjust his methods accordingly. We would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for real results.

What Makes Labradors Unique?

There are many reasons to love Labradors. Here are just a few:

  1. Labradors Love the Water: You may have already known this fact, because Labs are pretty famous for loving the water. They’re actually made for it! A Lab can use their thick tail – sometimes referred to as an “otter tail” – as a powerful rudder. They also have wide, webbed feet to help them swim fast and waterproof coats that help them remain comfortable even in cold water.
  2. They were Bred as Hunting Dogs: Initially, Labs were bred as duck retrievers, and then later as game-hunting companions. They tend to excel in retriever field trials and retriever hunting tests. They’re incredibly versatile as sport dogs, excelling in agility, rally and obedience sports.
  3. Labs Come in Three Colors: Labrador coats come in three colors – black, yellow, and chocolate.
  4. Labs can do Almost Anything: Their intelligence, energy, and affectionate nature makes them a popular choice for service and therapy dogs, as well as for search and rescue teams, and bomb and drug detection. Suffice to say, all Labradors are very good dogs who do very good jobs.

Breed Specific Tips & Tricks

Keeping Your Labrador Happy and Healthy

Although Labradors are famously laid back and friendly, that doesn’t mean they don’t require attentive care. If you’re considering adopting a Labrador, or you already have one and want to learn more about how to keep your pup happy and healthy, consider the following:

  1. Labradors Need Plenty of Exercise: Although Labs are easy going, they need plenty of exercise – even up to two hours a day. This can be made up of long walks, training sessions, playing fetch, or going to the dog park. Though it’s important to make sure they get enough exercise, you also need to be careful you don’t let your dog overdo it, especially as a puppy while their joints and bones are still growing.
  2. Groom Your Lab Weekly: Labradors have short, smooth coats that are prone to shedding. Combing them weekly with a comb or bristle brush, or combing daily during shedding season, can help keep shedding under control. Make sure you have a good vacuum!
  3. Manage their Diet: As big, energetic dogs, Labs need to eat a lot – but they can be prone to putting on pounds, as well. Follow the recommended amounts on dog food packaging, or consult with your vet.
  4. Make sure Your Labrador Gets Lots of Attention: Labradors are very social. Socialization with other dogs is important, so trips to the dog park, doggy play dates, or group training classes at Dog Training Elite can be beneficial for both you and your dog. If your Lab has to be home without you for long stretches of time, be sure to have stimulating dog toys, puzzles, and chew toys available for them, and consider hiring someone to check on and play with them during the day.

The Dog Training Elite training method is based around classical conditioning. Classical conditioning means developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands, so when you say “sit,” your dog will sit automatically. Labradors respond especially well to this technique and our trainers will focus on positive reinforcement training for your Labrador puppy.

While all dogs share qualities of kindness, loyalty and intelligence regardless of breed, Dog Training Elite recognizes that every dog is an individual and may require different training methods. We stand out by taking into consideration what breed your dog is when making training goals.

Regardless of your dogs specific breed, Dog Training Elite can help you and your pup overcome any obstacle related to obedience and socialization. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.
