Dog Behavior Training

Does your dog chew on things, pee indoors, or bark excessively? If so, your dog may benefit from a dog behaviorist, and DTE is here to help. Our experienced trainers specialize in correcting unwanted behaviors and can address various issues your dog may face at home.

Behavior-focused training differs from basic obedience training and requires knowledgeable, experienced trainers. DTE trainers can identify and address the root causes of problematic behaviors, such as separation anxiety or excessive barking, and teach your dog to respond more appropriately to those triggers.

Through consistent training and balance, your dog can learn new, desirable behaviors that last.

What is Behavioral Training?

Behavioral and regular obedience training serve different but equally important roles in shaping a well-behaved dog.

Obedience training teaches your dog basic commands like sit, heel, and come. This training helps your dog follow instructions in different situations and builds clear communication between you and your pet.

Behavioral training, however, goes deeper by addressing the root causes of problematic behaviors like aggression, anxiety, or excessive barking. While obedience training tells a dog what to do, behavioral training focuses on changing undesirable habits and reactions.

Combining obedience training with targeted behavioral solutions helps dogs overcome specific issues, resulting in a more balanced and adjusted pet.

Dog Training Elite Greater Cleveland is exceptional. They helped train my little monster as both a service animal and therapy dog. He’s constantly getting compliments on how well-mannered he is and how calm he behaves across environments. He’s such a playful gentleman with other dogs. He’ll be joining me in my work as a MH provider on both civilian and military careers. Having a well-trained dog is such a game changer! I can’t recommend Josh and his crew enough.

We adopted a 12 week old rescue terrier after we lost one of senior pups of 15 years. We named him Cash (aka Cash Monster) and forgot how it was to raise a puppy. This little guy has the will, spark, and energy of a small sun with a personality to match. With the intention of training him "right" (versus traditional old-school methods such as the slipper and nose-rubbing) we enlisted Dog Training Elite for some help. They sent Dominique who we've now been working with for the past several months ... And WOW! It's so hard to imagine Cash the way he was just a couple months ago. Dominique is so knowledgeable, experienced, and effective. With a great balance of empathy and discipline, she showed us how to care for and train Cash in ways that were so counterintuitive to what we've been used to. She is clear, adaptive, and tells us what we needed to do for the results that we were seeking. She is a great trainer for both Cash and ourselves. Absolutely 5-star experience and results.

The two week training camp has really helped our puppy and laid a great foundation for us to continue working with him to ensure he's a happy, well trained dog for life.

Tiffany was excellent with Penny. First time working inside a store. Introduction to the prong collar I feel was a big success as pulling just about stopped totally. Tiffany was very informative with guidance and direction with regards to furthering Pennys training and the subtle things that I myself have to pay attention to. I enjoyed working with her.

Dog Training Elite is the best! My husband and I rescued a 2yr old Goldendoodle after having spent 12+ hrs/day in her crate for most of her life. When she came to us, she was unsocialized and fearful of people, overstimulated on walks (pulled like a maniac), and in general, unsure of anything outside the home. Barking was her coping mechanism and something we couldn’t live with much longer!😫 Her energy was starting to effect on our resident dog and we were at the point of considering having to return her to the rescue. After reaching out to a number of local dog trainers, Christy made a free in-home visit and provided a clear and strategic plan to address and work through target behaviors. The advice given in the free consultation was enough to restore a sense of calm to our household before even getting started with training. Each training session focused on 1 or 2 basic obedience commands which our pup picked up quickly. Christy and her team were patient and informative throughout each session and remained available via call or text between sessions to address any questions or challenges that popped up between sessions. We began our training journey in February, and by April, our pup knows all her basic commands, walks nicely on a leash, warms up quickly to new people, stopped 90% of her barking (a HUGE win for us!), and can now go on off-leash hikes with excellent recall. Having chose the platinum plan, we’re excited to start group sessions in the coming weeks. Finding a trainer with the right expertise, communication skills, and care for your pup can be a challenge. Look no further and call Dog Training Elite of Maryland!

Dog Training Elite Chattanooga was really flexible with scheduling and the trainer explained everything in an easy to understand way. My dog’s behavior improved noticeably after the first private lesson, and the results were exactly what I hoped for. I’d recommend them to anyone looking for a straightforward, effective dog training experience. The trainer answered all questions I had and demonstrated so that I was comfortable with the concept so that I could train during the week to be ready for our next training session. We were training 2 puppies at the same time and he was very patient with me. Outstanding trainer.

I personally worked with Jason and Illiana. I recommend both highly. We did group sessions with other dogs and training in busy malls and home training indoors and outdoor training at home. I was extremely impressed and happy to benefit from the professional calm experience of both these trainers. My dog Bear and I were held to a high standard, training which was taught with Professionalism and confidence. The results speak for themselves. I realize that much of what they teach is for my dogs sake but much of it was also for me. The interaction between Owner and Dog is key to success. I feel extremely fortunate to have been trained and supported by Jason and Illiana.

Behavior Training Techniques

At DTE, we use proven techniques to encourage lasting behavior changes in dogs.

Here’s how we do it.

We use a clicker to mark the exact moment your dog performs the correct behavior. The click signals a coming reward and helps your dog learn which actions are worth repeating.
Similar to clicker training, this method uses a specific word or phrase like "yes" or "good" to mark the behavior. This verbal cue reinforces positive behavior and strengthens the communication between you and your dog.
By demonstrating correct behaviors with a "model" dog, other dogs in the group learn through observation. This method taps into dogs' natural tendency to imitate, making it easier for them to adopt behaviors.
Building a strong bond between dog and owner is key. We build trust and understand your dog's needs to create a cooperative training environment where your dog is more likely to respond positively.
A stick or specific spot is used to guide your dog to the desired behavior, encouraging them to touch or follow the target. Once they succeed, we reinforce the action with a reward. This technique is ideal for teaching complex behaviors and improving focus.

Classical Conditioning, or the Pavlovian Model

Classical conditioning, pioneered by Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov's work, is a fundamental principle in dog training. Pavlov’s study showed dogs could learn to associate a neutral stimulus, like a bell, with food, prompting them to respond to the bell alone.

At Dog Training Elite, we apply this principle in our behavioral training programs. We pair a command with two stimuli: a clicker (or marker word) and a reward like a treat or praise. The clicker signals the correct behavior, and the reward reinforces it. This method helps dogs quickly understand what’s expected and encourages them to repeat desired behaviors.

Unlike punishment-based methods, classical conditioning shapes behavior effectively and creates a well-adjusted, happy dog.
