What makes a dog a service dog?
Service dogs are dogs that have been specially trained to assist their handler or owner with specific tasks. Dog Training Elite Springfield trains dogs to assist people with epilepsy, diabetes, PTSD, autism, and various mental illnesses.
Who are service dogs for?
Service dogs are for any individual dealing with a disability that lowers their quality of life. For example, someone who suffers from epilepsy may avoid going out in public due to a fear of falling or other consequences related to seizures. This may inhibit their independence and sense of well-being.
In addition to improving the lives of individuals, service dogs can bring a sense of security to families, such as families with autistic children. Children with autism can often feel isolated and a service dog becomes a 24/7 companion to share experiences with, connect with and love. They can also help children reintegrate into society and connect with others.
Families who have children with autism experience a decrease in stress as they are more able to engage socially in public settings and experience less anxiety at home. A service dog increases safety and has a calming presence that can minimize emotional outbursts, allowing the family to feel more secure and a child with autism to better participate in family activities.
Service dogs are for all individuals or families that are experiencing a decrease in quality of life due to disability.
What kind of training does a service dog need?
Service dog training begins with puppies. Dog Training Elite Springfield’s service puppy training program works with breeders to adopt puppies that are fully obedience trained by six months and are ready to undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs.
Then, Dog Training Elite Springfield places puppies with families or individuals. Further specialized service training takes place alongside the new handler. It generally takes 1-2 years for a service dog to become fully trained.
Service dog training focuses on two main areas: public access behaviors, and how to “do work or perform tasks” that assist with a disability.
Public access behaviors refer to how a service dog acts in public - well-trained service dogs remain calm in public situations and in turn help their handlers to stay calm, and are attuned to any other handler needs.
As for “do work or perform tasks,” the ADA requires that service dogs be trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability.
For example, to assist handlers with PTSD, Dog Training Elite Springfield trains dogs to de-escalate anxiety, wake handlers experiencing night terrors, and so on.
Do service dogs require special certification?
The ADA does not require special certification for service animals. State and local government agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations may not require documentation, such as proof that the animal has been certified, trained or licensed as a service animal, as a condition for entry. Mandatory registration of service animals in the city of residence is also not permissible under the ADA.
However, service animals are not exempt from local animal control or public health requirements, such as vaccinations, or local dog licensing and registration requirements.
Why should I train my service dog with Dog Training Elite Springfield?

Dog Training Elite Springfield does not use punishments or shock collars to break bad habits. Instead, Dog Training Elite Springfield pairs positive reinforcement training with a vibration electronic collar. An electronic collar is not a shock collar and does not harm the dog. It is used to gain the dog’s attention, similar to a tug on a leash. It is never used as a punishment for bad behavior.
Another unique aspect of training with Dog Training Elite Springfield is that while most dog training programs train dogs at their own facilities, Dog Training Elite Springfield specializes in in-home training, customizing training to the dog, its owners and its environment for long-lasting success.

Our Balanced Theory

We have been working with Kristi for 3 weeks now and have seen so much improvement in our 4 year old dog. I am so thankful for Kristi and Jeremy, the owners and trainers for Dog Training Elite Springfield. They have been helping me train our 6 year old Boston Terrier to be a service dog. My husband has been in and out of the hospital for over 7 weeks this year. We were told by the doctors this will continue to be my husband’s life. Because of Kristi and Jeremy’s loving, positive training our sweet Bo was able to see his daddy in the hospital! Having Bo visit him in the hospital lifted his spirits so much! I am speechless how amazing this Company has been for my family and my service dog. There has been many challenges that have approached since we started and no matter what the challenges are they have helped and figure out what was best for the dog and our family. We found out that our dog was deaf and I am crippled until I have Surgery plus I have ptsd towards other dogs since my attack. If I could beam and flash spotlights on Dog Training Elite Springfield, I would! I once hated our little dog, Patsy, because of her terrible, obnoxious, and infuriating behavior. I was amazed that after the first session with Dog Training Elite, the monster became somewhat tame. I was not sold even yet. It was too good to be true for long! I knew that my experience at Dog Training Elite of Springfield would be amazing just based on the passion that Kristi and Jeremy have for what they do, but seeing Lucy in action at a busy Kindergarten open house with a hundred excited kids (Lucy's kryptonite) and just being totally focused on me and the task at hand.. it's indescribable. I get chills just thinking about it. Lucy is kind of a celebrity around our school district because she has always come with me to drop off and pick up kids. I had several parents come up to me at open house and tell me that they couldn't even believe she was the same dog! I am forever grateful for the peace that having Lucy as my service animal has given me and for the sense of purpose it has given her. I can’t say enough about how much Kristi and Jeremy have done for my family. They helped a shy 12 year old take her over exuberant miniature schnauzer puppy and meet her goals of an outstanding service dog. Denali shows calm demeanor and dedication to his best friend - be it at small basketball tournaments or one of the largest girls basketball tournaments in the country. If you are looking for a great dog training experience, look no further!!! I enrolled my two-year-old Golden Retriever and saw results on the first day. Truly grateful for Kristi and her team for helping us with our German Shepherd (Angus). He is the best big boy ever but after training he's even more amazing. I can finally take him for a walk instead of him taking me for a walk! Kristi came to our house once a week and did an hour training with Angus and made sure we knew exactly what was going on and helped guide us through the whole training. We have taken our German shepherd to just 2 sessions and she has improved SO much already. We have been trying to work on her leash reactivity (barking & lunging around dogs) for awhile now, and within these two sessions she hardly makes any noise when passing a dog now. Been working with Kristi for the last couple of months with my two standard poodles. One is 3 years old and one was 8 months when starting. I learned so much and my dogs are so much better behaved. I wanted more training with my dogs because my elderly parents come to visit and I was afraid they would take them out running around because the puppy has almost taken me out several times. Now when my parents come I can tell the doggie’s to go place and get my mother settled before releasing them for pets.
