Service Dog Training in Springfield, MO

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Disabilities include mental or physical impairments that affect an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities (walking, seeing, etc.).

Because service dogs play such a key role in the life of disabled individuals, they are protected by the law. Places of residence, employment, and commercial facilities cannot discriminate against disabled individuals with service animals. If you are wondering how to get a service dog, you can either purchase a fully trained dog or purchase a service puppy and train it.

With our service dog training in Springfield, MO, we ensure that your dog is trained to meet the specific needs of your disability, providing personalized support and empowering both dog and handler for long-term success.

We were at our wits end with our Catahoula Abby. She was not listening, would nip at children, and was very aggressive around other dogs and people she did not know. After the first week, she has been transformed to a brand new dog. She Is now the best behaved dog I’ve ever owned. I have been training coonhounds and dogs my whole life, but these guys worked a miracle. I would recommend them for any dog, especially high energy dogs. They are kind, caring, and compassionate. Their tools and their practice is top-notch and very professional. We cannot thank you enough! The cost is definitively worth the end result. We could not be happier with all of their staff and the results that we see!!

Hi! My name is Bentley and yes I have always been this handsome!! My Maw has been talking about 5/5 stars, I don’t have a clue about any of dat. All I know is my Maw brought me to meet some new friends one day, and boy howdy these new friends were the nicest group of gals I ever did meet! From the minute I walked (okay I was dragged in by my Maw) on day one the smile that Sara gave me, warmed my heart. Then Amber and McKenzie-these gals are top notch! They spent their days with me they always talked to me calmly and reassuring. And all the fun activities I got to learn!!! Maw thought I was a tad bit on the timid side, shy, barked incessantly and sometimes scared of my own shadow, but me and them there gals? We showed Maw a thing or two!!! Fore ya know it I’m walking in those doors real proud like, Sara just beaming her purtty smile at me, and oh all the lovings and “atta boys” from Amber and McKenzie…. It does a handsome boy like me good to feel so confident!! Adventures out with Maw these days are so much more fun, I walked right beside her, not scaredy cat anymore even when other big dogs walk past, I just hold my head high and strut past! I don’t even bark!!! Guess what? You can be as Stinkin cute as me AND confident AND have great manners too-all ya gotta do is have your Maw or Paw sit a spell and jaw with these here fine folks and they will teach Maw or Paw a thing or two while you get to have fun activities. 5/5 stars

While checking out dog training programs we came across Dog training Elite Springfield. Had no idea what it would entail but called and set up an appointment with Kristi and Jeremy owners and both dog trainers. Wasn't sure what we needed other than help with a rough and rowdy terrier named Auggie. They explained and demonstrated, with the use of their own dog how training could transform Auggie into the puppy we could be proud of. The cost of the course includes all you need to get great results. We took the chance and are glad we did. From the first day We were extremely satisfied with his progress. We were shocked to see how much he learned in one day. The course also includes training for the owners/parents. The staff are young, Knowledgeable and pleasant to work with. All in all, it is one of the best investments we could have made for our fur baby Auggie.

We have had a great experience here. Our puppies have loved being there and have learned so much. We are heading towards training, one to be a service dog and the other to be a therapy dog. They have done wonders with both of them. I can’t wait to finish training with them and appreciate all the time and energy they put into each puppy. I highly recommend.

Dog Training Elite, is 100% amazing! I'm amazed at the difference in my sweet little Poodle, Tinker. Tinker had issues with separation anxiety, would over react when any other dog was in sight. He would pull his leash and acted like a disobedient toddler. So much gratitude for the team at Dog Training Elite who not only helped Tinker to behave properly! But not only did they help him, they were honest, upfront, and fantastic with me and helping me before and after each class. Tinker and I have many happy years ahead!. Would recommend (and have) Dog Training Elite to anyone!

The team at Dog Training Elite are dedicated and exceptional at what they do. They helped me train my dog to Service Dog level. Recently we flew to Ecuador together. He performed perfectly. Going through security, navigating tight crowds of people, settling in on the planes. We couldn’t have done it without the help of Dog Training Elite. I highly recommend them!

My husband and I welcomed Finn (English Cream Golden) into our family last July and quickly realized that he was unlike any dog we had previously had. We have trained our previous dogs fairly easily but Finn was a bully and very contrary. Within 6 months I was ready to find him a home but was convinced he would become more manageable after the 14 month wait for neuter. I was wrong, after the neuter he was still wild, didn't listen and ate EVERYTHING! After being kicked out of two doggie day care centers in town, I was trying to contact a training center for a last ditch effort to keep him. That was how I got in touch with Kristie at dog training elite. I liked her immediately! She told me that she could provide an experience where I would love my dog. Honestly, I didn't see how but she was so genuine and positive that I would see a difference within our first training session that I had to try. We purchased the Platinum Plan, because between what we paid for Finn, and time invested it didn't make sense not to. I wanted Kristie to be there to demonstrate, show Finn, and then observe our training w Finn for hands on corrections. And ya know what.....I adore my dog. We are in week 5 training session....I can take a bath without him licking me, I can place him in the living room while I am cooking, I can have him come inside in a gentlemanly manner and he bullies no one. Gone are the days of shouting (embarrassing but true), frustration and disappointment on finding the 5th pair of glasses demolished. Kristie changed our lives and now I look forward to Finn time! Thank you!!! We are both much happier!! Money well spent, and if we ever do puppies again, we will start with this program. My family is very appreciative! Sincerely, Amy Williams

Can't say enough good things about Dog Training Elite! My 2 year old corgi, Mabel, was showing some reactive behavior and lack of proper boundaries and expectations were causing her to act out. The training was very helpful and has helped Mabel become a calmer more confident dog. Each session, the training staff would first work with Mabel to show the command and what was expected as the result before handing over the leash to allow us to get some practice in to help reinforce for both owner and pup. The group sessions have also been great because it gives us the opportunity to continue to work on the skills learned. We have gotten the opportunity to work with all of the trainers, and all are very knowledgeable and want the best for your dog.

We are a 75-year-old couple, and a few months ago we brought home our sweet little dachshund, Molly. As much as we adored her from the start, we soon realized her puppy energy was a bit more than we could handle. We needed help! That’s when we turned to Dog Training Elite of Springfield — and it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. From the first meeting, Kristi, Jeremy, and their wonderful staff treated us and Molly like family. They were patient, kind, and always willing to take the extra time to explain things in a way that we felt comfortable with. They clearly love what they do! After completing the two-week training program, Molly has come home transformed. She listens so much better, walks beside us without pulling, and is a lot calmer. Most importantly, we now feel confident handling her, which makes daily life so much more enjoyable. At our age, we truly appreciate having a well-mannered companion who can bring us joy without the stress— and thanks to Dog Training Elite of Springfield, that’s exactly what Molly is becoming. We can’t thank Kristi, Jeremy, and their dedicated staff enough for their care and expertise. We wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking for training that is not only effective, but also full of compassion. Molly is happier, and so are we! ——A grateful couple (and Molly 🐾)

I have a 6 month old French Bulldog who was impossible to handle. I’ve had Frenchies before so I knew I needed help and Dog Training Elite stepped up! My dog is now a joy to be around. She is great at home or in a crowd of people she doesn’t know. We just give her a command and she follows. She still has her happy, judg-ee, stubborn, sometimes bat crap crazy personality, but she is also calm and submissive when we need her to be. Dog Training Elite is absolutely the place to go if you want a well trained happy dog.

I am so thankful I made the choice to take my dog Armani to Dog Training Elite! His issues with dog reactivity had skyrocketed in recent months and I am beyond impressed with how much of an impact their program has had on both him and me. The staff is absolutely wonderful and made sure to take the time to really work through the issues we were having. The growth I’ve seen in my dog is something I never thought I would see and I’m beyond grateful for everyone at DTE. Now I’m able to take Armani out in public with much less fear and much more confidence!

Jaxson came in disobedient, making poor choices. With kids in the house, I needed tools to have him listen immediately. I can now take walks without him lunging at big dogs. I could see the results within the first few days. Thank you dog training elite!

I have been working with my dog sugar to become a service dog at dog training elite and they have been super helpful with the whole process from puppy training to obedience and now to task training and public access. Sugar is a different dog from when she was a puppy. She is much better behaved and still is her goofy self. I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting to have a service dog but can’t afford a pre trained one and or wants to train in person.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hey there, I’m Bella Mia—maltipoo, diva, and former queen of selective hearing. My mum signed me up for the puppy foundations camp and fast track camp because, apparently, my “sass” was getting out of hand. Well, jokes on her… because I came back even more fabulous and I actually listen now (most of the time). The trainers knew exactly how to handle a smart cookie like me—firm, fun, and totally in tune with my big perdonality. They didn’t break my spirit, they just helped me polish my princess behavior. Now I get what I want and follow the rules. Win-win. If your pup is strong-willed, clever, or just a little extra (no judgment), this place is the real deal. I’m still the boss… I just have better manners now. 🐾👑

After 3 years of training our Golden Retriever, Nugget, I decided I wanted to get him trained to be my service animal, so after a lot of searching I landed on Dog Training Elite of Springfield. I was also in school and only in town for winter breaks and summer, so Kristi sat down with me and planned out a fast track training schedule to get Nugget through each tier as long as we both worked hard and stayed focused! Prior to training with Elite, he already knew basic commands, but he needed to know the command wasn’t an option, it was a requirement! In a matter of 3 months, with a lot of work, consistency, and an awesome trainer (Kristi) Nugget successfully completed his basic training and public access training, and took his PA test in order to be certified! After a year of having Nugget as my service animal, I had a few issues to address. Kristi and Jeremy were eager to help address the problems I was facing and provided me with techniques and proper methods for command and button use. Nugget is back at work and school with me everyday! I am beyond pleased with Springfield’s Dog Training Elite Program and I will continue to recommend them! I know the cost is a hard pill to swallow but I promise that if you listen to Kristi and Jeremy, you put the time AND effort in and stay consistent with your dog, you will be beyond happy! 10 out of 10!

Is a Service Dog The Same As a Therapy Dog?

Many types of working dogs increase the quality of life for their handlers. The three main categories of working dogs are service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal. Each category covers different areas of support and different levels of protection under the law.

  1. Service Animal
  2. As mentioned above, service animals assist individuals with disabilities. Depending on the person’s needs, the service animal learns how to perform certain tasks. Guide dogs, for example, help blind individuals safely navigate their environment. Seizure response dogs respond to their handlers when the individual is having a seizure. Service animals are highly trained and specialized, and they are also offered the most protection under the law compared to therapy or emotional support animals.

Dogs are not the only kinds of service animals - miniature horses are often trained to support individuals with disabilities!

  3. Therapy Animal
  4. Therapy dogs provide comfort and improve the mental well-being of individuals in hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and more. These dogs must have a friendly, calm demeanor and be comfortable when handled by strangers.

Therapy dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks, but they must be obedient and well-mannered. Therapy animals are permitted in some areas where pets are not, but they have fewer protections than service animals. All therapy dogs must be certified before they can offer their services to the community.

  5. Emotional Support Animal
  6. Emotional support dogs relieve loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of mental health disorders. They provide comfort to their handlers, but they are not trained to perform specific tasks. Most emotional support animals are sensitive to the emotional changes of their handler and will remain close by at all times. Emotional support animals are not protected by the ADA, but residential buildings must permit emotional support animals.

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Service dogs are crucial in assisting individuals with various disabilities and conditions, providing them with support, independence, and companionship. These highly trained dogs can perform specific tasks tailored to the needs of their handlers. Learn about breeds that make great service dogs, who can benefit from a service dog and the training that will help these pups meet their handler's needs.

Service dogs are a great help to disabled individuals thanks to their incredible ability to perform highly specialized tasks, like opening doors, switching lights on and off, assisting with balance and stability, guiding, pulling wheelchairs, answering phones and making calls, finding objects or places, unloading and loading items, clearing rooms, finding help, and many more. Service dogs improve the lives of disabled individuals by increasing their autonomy.
Individuals with certain diseases and disorders can benefit from a highly trained service dog. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and they can detect the chemical changes associated with oncoming seizures and increases in blood pressure. Alert service dogs alert their handler to these situations to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Alert dogs also help those with extreme allergies detect potential allergens in food.
Disabled or epileptic individuals are more prone to emergencies than the average person. Service dogs are trained to alert their handler to a potential emergency, and alert surrounding individuals to an active emergency. Service dogs can also call for help on pre-programmed phones.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs trained to assist handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform specific tasks that reduce the potential for panic attacks or self-harm attempts. Such tasks include deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, clearing rooms, blocking strangers from approaching, and more. Service dogs trained to assist those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have greatly improved the lives of many veterans.

Service dogs also make a big impact on the lives of children with autism. Children with autism are often prone to meltdowns, have trouble communicating, and are quick to run off or become easily lost. Service dogs prevent and mediate all of these behaviors to provide a higher quality of life for children with autism and their families.

As autism is a spectrum disorder, each child has varying needs of assistance. Autism service dogs perform the following tasks:

  • Tracking: Children with autism often wander away, and a parent’s worst fear is turning their back for just a moment and discovering their child is gone. Autism service dogs will track the child if this ever happens.
  • Tethering: This task minimizes wandering, which is common in public settings. The child is tethered to the service dog’s leash or harness, preventing him or her from wandering away.
  • Behavior Interruption: Repetitive and ritualistic behaviors are typical of autistic children, as are meltdowns when the child becomes overstimulated. Autism service dogs recognize these negative behaviors and redirect the child’s attention when they start. A simple paw or nudge is all it takes to prevent a meltdown.

How Do I Get a Service Dog?

If you are wondering how to get a service dog, there are a couple of different approaches. Some service dogs are purchased outright, fully trained. Or a compatible dog is selected and trained from an early age. Training a dog from the start is the best option, especially for those with specialized needs.

Training a dog to perform service responsibilities must start from day one. Only certain breeds are suited to service work, and breeders put a lot of time into raising puppies to be service animals. Once you have purchased a service puppy, additional training is necessary to prepare your puppy for life as a service dog. This is a complicated process that involves various steps. Dog Training Elite makes getting a service dog easier with our service dog training program.

Our talented trainers can help select puppies that are prepared for a life of service from well-respected breeders. When these puppies enter the service dog training program they are closely monitored for behavior and temperament and can be fully obedience trained by the age of six months. These puppies undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs including specialized service training alongside the new handler.

This program is ideal for handlers who want to take part in the developmental years and extensive training of their service puppy.
