Therapy Dog Trainer in Connecticut

What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is trained to provide emotional support and comfort to people in need, often visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. These dogs must be friendly with strangers, able to handle high levels of distraction, and understand personal boundaries like not jumping, licking, or mouthing. With proper training, therapy dogs can bring joy and emotional relief to those they interact with, offering companionship in stressful environments.

At Dog Training Elite, we offer programs to help your dog become a certified therapy dog. As a leading therapy dog trainer in Connecticut, we focus on developing the right temperament and skills so your dog can confidently provide comfort and support in various settings. With our professional guidance, your dog can become a valuable source of emotional care and connection for individuals in need.

How Does a Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

While the companionship your dog brings you may inspire you to share that with others, not every dog is suited to be a therapy animal. Beyond a friendly, loving personality, several important qualifications must be met for a dog to be considered for therapy work:

  • Age: Puppies are typically too energetic and lack the focus to be therapy dogs.
  • Obedience: A therapy dog must follow commands reliably. Dogs that have completed obedience training with Dog Training Elite have the solid foundation needed to begin therapy dog training.
  • Social Skills: Therapy dogs need to naturally enjoy meeting new people and must handle being petted and approached by strangers without anxiety. Their ability to remain calm and friendly, even in unfamiliar situations, ensures they can provide emotional support to those they interact with.

We've had a great experience with Dog Training Elite of Southern CT. We have a rescue dog that has a lot of anxiety, and Jason provided us with guidance about how to give him more confidence. Jason was great about answering our questions, and provided a good mix of behavioral analysis and hands on training.

I have had only three private lessons, at my home and cannot express how Elite’s techniques has helped me train my rough collie. Jason and his team knowledge of the different breeds of dogs and the use of that knowledge to help me with techniques of owning a herding dog. They taught me techniques you can not learn on your own by getting to know my dogs living environment and my desire for Finnegan’s obedience training. All in my home within the distractions Finnegan deals with and I needed to understand to achieve obedience. I cannot praise their knowledge, care and thoughtfulness and it is proven in a short time. My fellow dog walkers, neighbors, expressed how much Finnegan has learned with this one on one in home training approach. I am thankful and highly recommend dog elite training. They even traveled to Woodbury CT for my one on one lessons. Thank You Jason, Loren and your team.

We were almost at the point of looking for a new home for our dog..until we found Dog Training Elite services of Southern CT. In the past, we've worked with a number of well-regarded local dog specialists, sadly without much progress. After an in-home evaluation and a full session with the Dog Training Elite team, we quickly determined a plan for managing our dog's high anxiety and addressing his aggressive behavior. The trainers at Dog Training Elite of Southern CT helped us expand our training options, that yielded amazing results. They were prepared with many ideas to consider, to try and helped us 'see' and 'mark' our dog's positive behavior. We jointly figured out what works better, and made both a short and longer term plans to work on. We are looking forward to continuing group sessions and expanding our dog's social circles in Fairfield and beyond. This has truly become a life-changing process for our dog and us! Thank You!!

Jason's patience and understanding allowed me to build a strong bond with my dog and confidently apply the techniques I learned during in-home dog training sessions in Norwalk, ultimately transforming our lives with anxiety-free walks with our calm and well-behaved Pup.

We contacted Dog Training Elite just a few days after adopting our very sweet but very large one year old dog, Rusty, and are so glad we did. We’ve worked with both Jason and Illiana and can’t say enough good things about our experience with them. Rusty came to us with little to no structure in his world and some agent-of-chaos energy but we could tell he was ready to learn, and we were eager to start his training right away. Having Jason and Illiana in our home to help get us on the right track with training has made a world of difference for all of us and has helped us bond quickly with our lovable but energetic boy. Each session they’ve been able to directly address and help problem solve anything that’s come up as we’ve gotten to know Rusty’s personality and quirks a little more. Their instruction has been clear, simple, and easy for us to follow on our own. If anything isn’t working for Rusty or for us, they help us incorporate different techniques until we find what clicks. We have and will continue to recommend them to anyone looking for a dog trainer in southern Connecticut!

It is clear that she is passionate about working with dogs and their owners towards building a trusting & loving bond! I saw massive improvements after only two visits and always look forward to what we will work on next. The company has always made scheduling easy and made me feel supported the entire time! I can honestly say we will maintain an ongoing relationship with Dog Training Elite of Southern CT and continue to work towards new training goals in our future!

The trainers at Dog Training Elite of Southern CT went above and beyond to ensure our dog received top-notch pet training and obedience. We have two golden retrievers that are wonderful dogs but lacked any structure. After a few sessions with Jason they are incredibly well behaved but just as fun loving as ever (and they seem genuinely happier). The training was very well thought out and we could practice during the week. We now feel comfortable bringing the dogs on walks in the mall and all around New Canaan. We could not be happier. thank you !!!

Jason came to my home in Guilford to help train my 10 month old puppy who had developed anxiety about going for walks. He gave me the tools to help her overcome her fears and we also worked on general obedience training, recall, and heel which have been amazing. I told him I was only interested in using a positive reinforcement approach and he encouraged it and helped me understand the benefits and scenarios of both methods, which was really helpful. Thank you Jason and Loren!

After four years of good but hyperactive behavior, River seemed to reach an uncharacteristic level of anxiety. This resulted in her becoming territorial and lashing out at our other dogs. One incident led to an accident and a trip to the ER. Seeing my fiancé devastated and at wit's end, I found Dog Training Elite. She called, and by that evening, we had an in-home appointment scheduled. I had never had to do obedience training for an adult dog before, so I was unsure what to expect. The clear instructions provided by Dog Training Elite of Southern CT made the entire learning process and training journey seamless and easy to follow. From dog obedience training and the anxiety training for dogs, I cannot say enough good things about our sessions. Within the first week, River was like a new dog; though she still had many issues, she followed commands and enjoyed the training. By the third visit, we had been instructed on many training options, techniques, and tools and given the choice of which we preferred. We appreciated the expertise and personalized attention of the professional dog trainer, who successfully bridged the gap between the concept and practical application. While every dog is different, I recommend that anyone in Middletown or surrounding areas who has a dog like River and thinks they may have to give it up, check out Dog Training Elite. We can not say thank you enough for helping with the tools and training us to keep River as part of our family, next up on the block are our other two dogs.

Jason, the owner/trainer is excellent! He came to my home in Bristol and helped us with obedience training for our newly adopted 4 yr old dog Max. Prior to Jason‘s arrival, Max had no formal obedience training-and it showed…literally within the week Max was heeling and walking politely on leash, instead of pulling and tugging!! Jason also worked with Max and gave us easy to follow instructions with all of Max’s basic commands-and they WORK! Jason is patient and personable and HE KNOW DOGS!! Worth every cent, and Jason’s always willing to take a phone call if you have a question. And the mobile service coming to your home is so convenient!!!!!

Benefits of Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs have a profound impact on individuals’ emotional and physical well-being. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs can improve a patient's mood, reduce stress, and even lower pain levels during hospital stays or medical treatments. Their calming presence provides comfort and relief in challenging moments.

Children, in particular, often respond well to therapy dogs. The companionship and playful interaction of a therapy dog can motivate children to engage more fully in treatments, helping them overcome fear or reluctance. With a therapy dog by their side, children tend to feel more optimistic and less anxious.

Beyond medical settings, therapy dogs also foster social interaction, especially in autism and mental health communities. These dogs offer non-judgmental companionship and serve as a bridge for individuals who may struggle with social connections. By reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety, therapy dogs offer their owners comfort and companionship that enhances the overall quality of life.

ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals

What's the Difference?

Animals that provide assistance and companionship can be classified into three main groups: service animals, emotional support animals (ESAs), and therapy animals. Each has different responsibilities, training requirements, and legal protections. Knowing the differences can help you choose the right type of support for a disability, emotional needs, or therapy purposes.

Here are the defining features of each type:

Service animals are trained to help individuals by performing tasks that meet their specific needs, such as:

  • Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
  • Reminding owners to take medication
  • Waking someone who is having a nightmare

Service dogs are highly valued in the mental health and disability community and are protected under ADA laws, allowing them to accompany their owners anywhere. At DTE, we provide specialized training for service dogs that assist individuals with autism, diabetes, and PTSD.

The key difference between ESAs, therapy dogs, and service dogs is that service animals are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means they are allowed to go anywhere their owner goes. ESAs and therapy dogs do not have the same protections as service dogs, and public places can set their own rules about allowing them.

ESAs are prescribed by licensed mental health professionals to help individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. These animals provide emotional support simply by being a comforting presence. Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not trained to perform specific tasks related to their owner's condition.

ESAs can be of any breed or age, and while they do not require the same level of training as service dogs, many owners choose to seek additional training. This can help strengthen the bond between the owner and the animal and improve the ESA's ability to provide consistent emotional support in different situations.

Therapy animals provide comfort and emotional support to individuals in need. They are not trained to assist a single person but are instead taught to be well-behaved and sociable around various groups of people. These animals help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness for those they visit.

Unlike service animals, therapy animals are not required to perform specific tasks. Their calming presence is what makes them valuable in therapeutic programs.
