Dog Training Elite knows dog training is truly a lifelong pursuit. As your puppy or dog masters the basics, you can move onto more complicated tricks and training. Maybe you’ve progressed from “sit” to seeing how long they can hold it, or you’re working on taking your pet through an obstacle course.

It can be hard to come up with new ideas to train your dog, and after months of having structured training one-on-one with your pet it can be especially difficult to know what to do next. What will benefit both you and your dog the most?

We offer dog training classes near you for puppies and older dogs that may be the answer you’re looking for. While group training classes aren’t always necessary, they can be extremely beneficial to both your dog and you.

FAQs

One of our trainers will visit your home to meet you and your dog and discuss any issues you're facing. We will then demonstrate one of our model dogs so you can see what you can expect after hiring our trainers. From there, we will discuss the various packages we offer and which we feel best suit your (and your dog's) needs.
We provide full obedience training that covers all basic commands, both on and off-leash. Our in-home visits target specific issues like counter-surfing, digging, and more. Unlike some trainers, we work with all breeds, including those often considered challenging.
Yes. You (and anyone in your family who wants to be involved) are integral to your dog getting trained. We need you to practice 5-6 days a week, about 15-20 minutes a day for optimal results.
Once a week. We come to you (with the silver, gold and platinum packages) once a week to start your dog off, then you come to park sessions which are held once a week in Connecticut.
We train dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments. Whether your dog is a tiny Chihuahua or a large Mastiff, we have the experience and expertise to work with them.

Illiana was incredible with our dog. You can tell right away how much she knows about training dogs and how much she loves them. We thought our dog was untrainable, she showed us he is not. He is much better mannered and more enjoyable for everyone Great Job and Thank You Kim & Chip

We got a new English Bulldog puppy (Penny) in October 2023, and started training as soon as possible with the end goal of her being trained as a support service dog in public areas (nursing homes, hospitals, etc.). We mostly worked with Jason who is patient, knowledgeable and easy to work with. We also worked with Illiana a few times who is creative, knowledgeable, and patient. Both are great! As Penny started to grow, we unexpectedly found out that she has a genetic disorder in her neck/spine that limits her activity and our training options. The team was very patient and understanding and always willing to help. They were flexible and creative with training ideas, tailored to work within Penny’s personal tendencies, and with her medical restrictions which is hard to come by with a special needs dog. I also love that they come to the house, making the training more realistic and personable to the dog and us, not to mention it’s easier on the work schedule! Penny has picked up on all of her training commands quickly, and now it’s on us to be consistent and see it through! I highly recommend this company and team for your training needs!

Dog Training Elite has been an absolute game-changer for me and my 6-month-old German Shepherd, Jasper. From the very beginning, Jason's expertise and patience were evident. He has a remarkable ability to connect with dogs, and Jasper clearly felt comfortable and at ease around him. Jason's training methods have been instrumental in giving Jasper a solid foundation in obedience. He has made significant strides in his behavior, and I'm so grateful for the progress we've made together. Jason's guidance on using the e-collar has been invaluable. It's a tool that has proven to be a lifesaver in certain situations. One of the features I appreciate most about Dog Training Elite is their group sessions. These sessions have been fantastic for Jasper's socialization, allowing him to interact with other dogs and people in a controlled environment. Additionally, training in a busy park has helped him learn to focus and respond to commands amidst distractions. I highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone looking for a dedicated and effective training program. Jason's commitment to both the dog and the owner is truly commendable.

Three weeks ago I contracted with Dog Training Elite and it has been an incredible and eye opening experience. Jason is our trainer and he is top notch. He has provided such valuable education that we have been able to train our 10 year old boxer and 18 month cane corso in this short time. Training as I’ve learned is about the owners showing consistency and following through. In just three sessions our dogs bark infrequently, walk on a loose lease (no more Mom drags), follow through on commands and don’t get on our furniture. The investment was well worth the exceptional outcomes. We wish we had done this years ago. Jason has proven techniques and a calming presence. Our dogs look forward to seeing him. We are excited to start group training next. Thank you so much Jason for helping our dogs reach their greatest potential (not to mention their humans)!!!

I had Illiana one of the new trainers here and she was extraordinarily helpful with my one year old golden doodle who had horrible leash manners and resource guarding over stolen items. I have been very successful with crate training and having him lower his stress levels when guests come over. She has also helped with desensitizing him and various objects around the house as well as when in public talking to people he remains very calm and in a down position! I couldn’t have been successful without her input and I was more than happy to do my homework and train him with all the advice she gave me! I 100% recommend Illiana!

I worked mostly with Illiana and I have nothing but amazing things to say about her. Our boys ADORE that woman. She's so incredibly intelligent and practiced and we felt very empowered every time we learned something new! Everyone else we've interacted with has been so kind and helpful and I don't regret this decision at all. It's been a wonderful experience so far!

Dog Training Elite made life with my pups so much better! I have 2 dogs (5yr old pit/boxer and 1yr old lab mix) that didn’t have any obedience training but also had some different needs. Jason was extremely knowledgeable and patient with both of them and their different needs. After just one lesson on leash training, our walks became enjoyable rather than a daunting task. And it’s only getting better! I’m so glad I found Dog Training Elite. I only wish I had found them sooner! And Loren was so helpful with scheduling and all my rescheduling needs! I couldn’t recommend them more! Thank you!

We had an amazing experience with Dog Training Elite New Haven! Our trainer, Jason, was exceptional. His love for dogs and expertise in training are evident in every session. Our dog was incredibly reactive, but thanks to Jason's fun and effective training methods, she is now obedient and well-behaved. What truly impressed us was how easy it was to apply the same techniques to our older dog, resulting in a dramatic improvement in her behavior as well. Jason's passion and skill made the entire process enjoyable and rewarding. We couldn't be happier with the results and highly recommend Dog Training Elite New Haven to anyone in need of top-notch dog training services!

I do not have enough good things to say about trainer J and the team at dog training elite. I came to them with a 2 year old rescue malinois/shepard mix who had severe anxiety, extremely reactive, and every walk with her was a task. After 1 session we saw improvement and after 5 it was like a brand new dog! In just 5 sessions trainer J was able to take my girl from a reactive girl I couldn’t take my eye off for one second, to a dog that I enjoy taking with me everywhere I go and she’s loving her new life in brooklyn! Thanks so much trainer J!!

Choosing elite dog training for my service dog and regular obedience classes for my other dog was one of the best decisions I ever made! The trainers are knowledgeable and are not only good at training your pets but also helping you as an owner feel empowered and learn the proper techniques so that you don't confuse your pup. They are very knowledgeable in traditional training but also are adaptable. What I mean to say is that they really do look at the individual dog and family to evaluate the needs and best Best way to meet the ne meet those meet those needs.

DTE is the perfect choice for dog training. Everyone from Loren to Jason were nothing short of excellent. My dog Rayne has so much anxiety, that it caused her to become very reactive towards people and other dogs. After one session with Jason I started seeing an improvement. He really takes the time to focus on both you and your dog’s behavior. I highly recommend DTE.

Thank you, Jason, for helping us with our Doberman. Although he is our 2nd dobie he presented us with a challenge having such high anxiety we didn’t experience with our older one. This was new for us and became very frustrating. Jason reassured us we were doing everything right and with some consistent training and technique helped our Dobie become more adjusted and able to work through his anxiety. Walks are now a pleasure vs a stressful time for the 2 of us. The group sessions were vital for us, the consistency of the trainings helped him be around other dogs and begin to trust other dogs vs stress out around them. The one-to-ones were personal and Jason dedicated the time to exactly what our Dobie and I needed to be successful. We continue with the group sessions to keep the consistency. Thank you for helping us get our Dobie to a better place for him and our family.

Classes are a mix of all dog breeds and sizes, and our classes provide necessary socialization skills and practice around high levels of distraction. We like to make our group classes exciting for both dogs and handlers, and we have created fun training games and an environment that feels less like a class and more like a social outing.

We are building a community and our dog training groups tend to feel like a family and less like a dog training group. Friends are made, bonds are formed, and both dogs and dog Owners look forward to their once a week group training sessions.

Signs Your Dog is Ready for Training

Every dog can benefit from training, and it can sometimes be a lifelong pursuit. If you’re wondering if training is right for you, here are some signs your dog is ready for training:

  • Your Dog is Destructive: Whether it’s chewing on furniture or shoes, going to the bathroom in your house, or anything else your dog is not supposed to do -- it’s time to get them trained out of these sorts of behaviors. Even older dogs who were previously well-behaved may develop bad habits later in life and need a training refresher.
  • Your Dog is Aggressive: Aggression can manifest itself in multiple ways; perhaps your dog growls or snaps at you when you get close to his or her food, or toys. Even more concerning is when your dog is aggressive towards other dogs or humans. Yes, sometimes dogs play in a way that seems aggressive, but if your dog is lunging at or snapping at people or other dogs while you’re on walks, it’s time to get a trainer’s help.
  • Your Dog Misbehaves on Their Leash: Walking nicely on a leash does not come naturally to most dogs but it is something that can be learned. Again, even older dogs who previously walked well on a leash may start to act out.
  • Your Dog is Anxious or Fearful: If your dog is dealing with severe separation anxiety, or is fearful in new environments, a trainer can help. For separation anxiety a trainer will work with you and your dog on a routine to reassure your dog. General training, especially in group classes, can help dogs build confidence.
  • Your Dog Ignores You at the Park: Or on walks, or whenever you’re outside. If your dog is obedient when they’re in your home, but loses their mind outside, he or she would benefit from more training. Group classes can be especially helpful because they put your dog in a safe environment with the kinds of distractions you experience outside. Training your dog in situations where there are other distractions helps them learn to obey even when there are other stimulating sights and sounds.

The DTE Difference

Regardless of whether it’s an in-home training session or a group class, the Dog Training Elite training method is the same. We focus on positive reinforcement, also called “Classical Conditioning” or the “Pavlovian” method. Research has shown positive reinforcement to be more effective with longer lasting results than other training methods.

We do not use punishments or shock collars and instead pairs positive reinforcement training with an electronic collar for superior results. An electronic collar is not a shock collar and does not harm the dog. It is a gentle electronic pulse, similar to the tug of a leash, used to get the dog’s attention. It is never used as a punishment for bad behavior.

Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs. a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out. Our method of focusing on positive behavior reinforcement nurtures a dog’s loving and naturally obedient nature.

Benefits of Group Classes

Just like humans, dogs all have their own personalities. Some may receive and respond to all the training they need from private, one-on-one instruction, while others may find great benefit from attending a group class. Group classes can be a great asset to both dogs and their owners, since it provides them with many different situations and experiences they may not otherwise have.

Here are some other benefits of attending group dog training classes:

Group dog training classes have a number of benefits, particularly with socialization. Taking a puppy to group classes once they’re immunized will help them grow into a well-socialized dog comfortable with other dogs and humans. Older dogs who weren’t well socialized as puppies can learn to socialize in a small, safe environment. Trainers will recognize signs of possible conflict between dogs and help owners learn how to diffuse situations and take care of their pets, and dogs will learn how to interact appropriately with each other.

Dog training classes can also be beneficial for owners! If you bring your dog to a group class, you’ll meet other dog owners and become part of a community. Dog Training Elite likes to make group classes exciting for both dogs and their owners, so expect to learn fun training games and enjoy an environment that feels less like a class and more like a social outing. Classes meet once a week, and both you and your dog will look forward to going every week.

Besides the socialization benefits, group classes are a great tool for dogs to learn to work around distractions. If your dog is perfectly obedient at home, but loses his or her mind at the dog park and forgets all they’ve learned, group classes are the way to go. Group classes are a safe way to help your dog learn to listen to you, even when they’re surrounded by exciting sights, smells and sounds.

In a dog training class, you are in control of the training. While your pooch may occasionally be used as the ‘demo’ dog, there will be very few instances where your dog only has to listen to the trainer. With a class, you are the trainer, and the instructor is just acting as a guide. With all of Dog Training Elite’s training options - in-home or through a class - you will always be the No. 1 trainer, not just sitting on the sidelines as someone else takes charge.

Each dog is unique, and the small classes at Dog Training Elite of Southern CT will allow you and your dog to still receive personalized attention and training. You will also have the opportunity to learn from other dogs and their owners. Imagine the trainer advises another owner how to help their dog learn to play independently. Later, you might remember the advice and apply it to your own dog, away from the class.
