In-Home Training

Dog Training Elite in Cleveland Metro has specialized training courses for both puppies and older dogs. For in-home training, dog trainers will observe dog breed, size, temperament and any other factors that will influence training.

Working with the dog and dog owner directly in an owner’s home, dog trainers will develop a personalized training plan for basic commands like sit, down, come, heel, etc.; as well as to address any unique issues such as anxiety, aggression, fear and so on. Once a dog is trained, owners can sign their dogs up for group classes with more in-depth training.

Starting with in-home training is an unmatched service that provides dogs and dog owners with the opportunity to work together. Not only does in-home dog obedience training free dogs from the distractions of a group class, but ensuring a dog is learning from both their owner and a trainer will help owners and dogs strengthen their bond. Dogs that learn only from trainers may be inclined to disobey when the trainer is not around. Equally sharing the task of training between dog and dog owner leads to the development of trust and deepening love.

Trainers from Dog Training Elite in Cleveland Metro seek to not only help train dogs, but empower owners so they can continue training their dogs in years to come. This includes sharing tips and tricks (treats are always a good thing!), as well as pointing out personality traits and behavior issues dog owners should focus on.

FAQs

One of our trainers will visit your home to meet you and your dog and discuss any issues you're facing. We will then demonstrate one of our model dogs so you can see what you can expect after hiring our trainers. From there, we will discuss the various packages we offer and which we feel best suit your (and your dog's) needs.
We provide full obedience training that covers all basic commands, both on and off-leash. Our in-home visits target specific issues like counter-surfing, digging, and more. Unlike some trainers, we work with all breeds, including those often considered challenging.
Yes. You (and anyone in your family who wants to be involved) are integral to your dog getting trained. We need you to practice 5-6 days a week, about 15-20 minutes a day for optimal results.
Once a week. We come to you (with the silver, gold and platinum packages) once a week to start your dog off, then you come to park sessions which are held once a week in Cleveland.
We train dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments. Whether your dog is a tiny Chihuahua or a large Mastiff, we have the experience and expertise to work with them.

I am so grateful for Kevin, Andrea, and Jimmy! They were so patient as we navigated training two dogs. My pitbull has skin issues so they worked with me on making sure the collar we used didn’t affect his skin. They were all so encouraging and gave my pups so much love. It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to continue the training with the pack walks.

AMAZING STAFF! We are so thankful to have connected with this group. They go above and beyond. We have a pack for life ❤️ Kevin and Andrea have been such a great resource, even before I had my pup! Andrea spoke with me for an hour or so about where to start in looking for a puppy as my service dog. We connected again after finding the best pup ever (thanks to Andreas expert advice on breeder selection). We got to work training and it just seemed like such an easy process, even with all the hard work! We had the tools, knowledge, and support to get where we are today!

Marley is a 7 year old cavachon. Happy dog. But a gleeful barker at dogs and people. A leash puller!! Still happy as can be. Walks like a champ. Even ignores those chatty squirrels and swarms of deer. Marley is becoming a trained PSA. And we owe it to Kevin, Andrea and Elite.

I can’t say enough good things about the Dog Training Elite Team. If you are looking for a practical approach to obedience training, look no further. The platinum dog training program set the foundation for success for our 1yr. Old Bully. He was reactive towards people and animals, making walks and community outings difficult. Kevin and Andrea, take the time to understand your needs. One-on-one sessions offer a better understanding of dog behavior and proper technique. I especially enjoyed the Doggie Day camps. Unlike board and train programs, our boy spent the day training and playing with new friends. Then, he was allowed to come home at the end of the day, where we completed our homework(Practice)! The entire staff at the training facility is knowledgeable, caring, and dedicated to helping your pup be all it can be. Be assured that when you partner with the DTE team, they will be committed to the long-term success of your fur baby.

Very clear and positive way of dealing with issues your pup may have. The trainers are encouraging no matter what happens, or how stubborn your dog is. They figure out ways to solve all problems. Extremely happy to have hired them

Dog Training Elite has forever changed our lives. I got my first puppy, Vienna, and while I loved her, I struggled through the puppy stage and remember feeling overwhelmed. That changed once we started training with Kevin and Andrea. Now, Vienna is incredibly well-behaved and receives compliments wherever we go. We’re so grateful for the work they put into helping us with our dog. Their family-run facility makes you and your pet feel like family too. We’ll definitely be going through Dog Training Elite for our next puppy!

Josh, Lexi and Hayley were amazing to work with! After completing the 4 week dog therapy camp, I feel confident bringing my pup to work with me on a daily basis. The support after camp was over is also really impressive and helpful. I couldn’t be more pleased and I would recommend them to anyone.

Josh did an amazing job working with our German Shepard-husky mix, Bear! I liked having a combination of in-home, outdoor, & public location sessions for training. You have to make sure you are willing to put in the time, but the results are great, and it’s so worth it!

I cannot recommend Dog Training Elite enough! From the start, Lexi made everything easy to understand and gave us the confidence we needed to train our German Shepherd. I knew owning such a strong, intelligent breed would be a challenge without proper guidance, so I’m grateful to have found Dog Training Elite. Thanks to Lexi’s expertise, Ace has come so far! She even provided tips to help us reinforce good habits at home, making the progress stick. I also had the pleasure of meeting Josh during a group class at the facility, and he’s just as amazing and passionate about his work. I can’t wait to take Ace on many for group classes in future.

From day one Josh provided exactly what Hank and I needed. Hank is obedient and a completely different dog. This helped us bond, build trust, and grow the relationship. Thank you Dog Training Elite and Josh, I am grateful and I appreciate your services.

I’ll try to keep it short. I wish I could add videos because these pictures are just a sneak peak of the incredible things he will be able to get your dog or dogs to do! JOSH IS THE MAN!! Listen if you’re looking for a great dog trainer this is the place to go. You truly must be willing to do your part just like you’re paying them to do. This place really knows how to dial your dog in. They also take the time to teach you what they do which is truly amazing ! I would recommend anyone to go here for their dog! Josh is a very genuine human. Very warm kind heart guy. Have absolutely nothing but great respect for that man. Very intelligent when it comes to working with animals. He knows the breeds inside and out knows a lot of great great information. The in facility portion is highly recommended in my opinion if you want those results fast and that good socialization. The at homes are just as good the in facility though man it worked wonders. Feel free to follow me and I’d be happy to share my only 5 month old Rottweilers amazing results !

We took our Bernese Mountain Dog/Australian Shepherd mix (Koda) to Dog Training Elite Greater Cleveland. We had the best experience throughout the in-facility training. The trainers were so helpful and pleasant to deal with, and Koda learned a ton throughout the process. He completed the therapy dog training a couple weeks ago and came out of training a new dog. He is still a puppy and never lost his spunk, but we are now able to take him on walks without being pulled around the neighborhood, he knows all of his basic commands, sit, down, place and heal, and also knows how to politely meet a friend. We couldn’t recommend more this facility and are so happy with all of the services provided. We are so proud of our young Koda and he is going to make a great therapy dog one day.

I cannot begin to thank Josh and his wonderful employees for working so hard for our dog Rocky, also known as RJ. And rescue it's very hard for us to see our dogs struggling mentally and not knowing the proper way to be a dog and to share. We had one dog that had resource guarding, and that was Rocky, he worked with him for two weeks and we could not be any more happy if we tried. They went up and beyond what I feel was 2 weeks of training guidelines. I felt very safe knowing my dog was in their hands every day. I knew I would get back the new and improved dog, a happier dog and a well-rounded dog. They did not prove me wrong. It's just so beautiful to see Rocky now thriving in his new home with his new adapters. Thank you Elite Dog Training of Greater Cleveland for giving us a peaceful and loving dog, that we can confidently adopt out. All my best Melissa Daniels-Gelsinger Lake Erie Labrador Retriever Rescue Trustee

Our Difference

There are numerous dog obedience training methods out there, which can be broken down into three main theories: traditional, modern and balanced.

  1. Traditional training typically relies on punishment for errors, and “low value” rewards such as praise or petting when a dog performs a desired behavior. In recent years traditional training has fallen out of favor.
  2. Modern training, which is more science-based, focuses more on positive reinforcement when a desired behavior occurs and doesn’t worry about correcting bad behavior. This training method has many benefits, including faster learning for dogs, less stress and anxiety for dogs, ability to teach more complex behaviors, and of course, a better experience for dog owners and trainers.
  3. Balanced training theory, while it sounds like the best of both worlds, still incorporates the use of punishment as a training tool.

Dog Training Elite in Cleveland Metro uses modern training methods focused on positive reinforcement and bonding between dog and dog owner. Dog Training Elite in Cleveland Metro never resorts to the use of punishment to help dogs unlearn bad behavior. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out.

Effective Training Through Positive Reinforcement and Classical Conditioning

Dog Training Elite in Cleveland Metro

The Dog Training Elite in Cleveland Metro training theory is mostly based around classical conditioning, also known as the Pavlovian method or respondent conditioning. This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when an owner says "sit," their dog automatically sits without thinking about it.

Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. The electronic collar is not a shock collar; it is a gentle electronic pulse, similar to the tug of a leash, used to get the dog’s attention. Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. Dog Training Elite in Cleveland Metro’s method of focusing on positive behavior reinforcement nurtures a dog's loving and naturally obedient nature.

Common Questions About Obedience Training

Still have questions about obedience training? We’ve got you covered! Below are some frequently asked questions that might help clarify any remaining concerns you have. At Dog Training Elite in Cleveland Metro, we're here to ensure you and your dog have the best training experience possible.

The earlier, the better. Puppies are welcome! That being said, old dogs truly can learn new tricks - there is no reason an older dog can’t learn basic commands.
Besides basic commands, dog obedience training can address issues such as chewing, whining or barking, jumping to greet others, and begging for food.
No. Pain or punishment is never used in any form during training programs. A combination of positive reinforcement and an electronic collar has proven to be 100% successful. The electronic collar produces a gentle “tug” to get a dog's attention. It is not a shock collar and does not harm or alarm a pet.
In-home training is necessary because it allows trainers to focus on the particular issues of individual dogs (like terrorizing a pet cat or chasing the mailman). During in-home training sessions trainers also work side by side with owners and any other family members so the dog understands who is in control.
