Obedience Training from DTE

The First Step Toward Dog Agility Training in Cleveland, OH

Agility is a fast-paced sport that involves guiding dogs through different obstacle courses. The best candidates for this type of training are energetic, athletic dogs with a strong drive to work and learn, such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Jack Russell Terriers, and Belgian Malinois. However, any dog with enthusiasm, focus, and basic obedience training can benefit from agility exercises.

Many owners choose DTE for basic obedience before starting dog agility training in Cleveland, OH. While we don’t offer competition-level training, our obedience programs help build key skills like focus, impulse control, and responsiveness.

Our trainers will work closely with you throughout the obedience program, ensuring your dog masters fundamental commands and you feel confident to continue agility training on your own.

Why Start Obedience Training Before Agility Training?

Dog Training Elite

Agility training demands focus, discipline, and responsiveness. Before tackling obstacle courses, dogs need a solid foundation in obedience to ensure they can follow commands, stay engaged, and work as a team with their handler.

Here’s how obedience training with Dog Training Elite sets dogs up for success in agility:

Agility courses can be full of distractions, including large crowds, other dogs, and loud noises. Obedience training teaches your dog to stay focused on you and respond to commands, even in high-energy environments.

Agility courses require dogs to pause and wait at key thresholds, such as the start line, and only move when directed. Obedience training reinforces patience and discipline through commands like “sit,” “heel,” and “down,” ensuring your dog stays focused and follows the rules of the sport.

Obedience training deepens trust and communication between dog and handler, making teamwork in agility training much more effective. A confident dog is more likely to take on new challenges with enthusiasm.

Before dogs can learn agility-specific commands, they must first master basic obedience. Training in focus, recall, and impulse control lays the groundwork for advanced commands like “jump,” “tunnel,” “weave,” and “climb.”

At Dog Training Elite, we don’t teach advanced agility commands, but our training makes it easier for your dog to learn and respond to agility training in the future.

If your dog has mastered basic obedience and you're interested in starting agility training on your own, understanding what obstacles to train for is the first place to start.

Here are some common agility challenges and training tips:

Jumps

Dogs must leap over hurdles at varying heights without knocking the bar down. In competitions, jumps can include single bars, double jumps, and tire jumps.

  • Training Tip: Start with low jumps and use treats or toys to guide your dog over. Gradually increase height as their confidence and ability grows.

Weave Poles

Dogs weave through a series of upright poles in a precise pattern. This is one of the most challenging agility obstacles, requiring speed, flexibility, and precise footwork.

  • Training Tip: Use a lure-and-reward method or guide your dog through the poles with a leash. Begin with wider pole spacing and narrow the gaps as your dog improves.

Tunnels

Dogs run through enclosed tunnels, which can be straight or curved. Some dogs may hesitate at first, especially if they are unfamiliar with dark or enclosed spaces.

  • Training Tip: Start with a short, straight tunnel and use treats or a favorite toy to encourage your dog through. Gradually introduce curved tunnels to increase difficulty.

A-Frame & Dog Walk

These obstacles require dogs to climb, balance, and descend elevated surfaces. The A-frame is a tall, triangular ramp, while the dog walk is a narrow, elevated plank with ramps on both ends. Both require precise foot placement and body control.

  • Training Tip: Use a leash or hand signals to guide your dog slowly up and down. Reward calm, controlled movements to prevent them from rushing or jumping off too soon.

I was really struggling with 2 puppies that were only 2 months apart. The older puppy is my son's dog, whom I have had since November. On several occasions, he had pulled me down to the ground while taking him outside. With this issue and having a daughter with disabilities, the possibility of me incurring a serious injury was not an option. This was my main reason for taking him for formal training. Josh and Kevin were my 2 trainers for Rocky's training. Rocky is now able to be off leash in a yard with no fence. I live in a very dog friendly neighborhood with many neighbors who are on daily walks and both of my pups are no off leash with no issues of listening to the commands that were taught to me for Rocky that I use on both of them. I have referred several people to get in touch with this wonderful organization. Hands down one of the best investments that I have ever made. A couple of bonuses have been minimal barking (that is quickly corrected), and neither one jumps on company when they come over anymore. Give them a call and talk to them about your concerns with your fur babies.

The staff at Dog Training Elite Greater Cleveland demonstrated remarkable kindness, patiently guiding us through each step of the process, while also leveraging their expert knowledge to help our pup thrive, all balanced with a sense of humor and unwavering honesty - a truly exceptional team that exceeded our expectations. Their grasp of dog behavior was truly impressive, especially during our Basic obedience lessons and Service Dog Training sessions. My dog, Murphy, learned quickly. They needed a lot of patience to train me! Lol

I am so impressed with Dog Training Elite. We took our 70 pound 18 month old puppy to them because we just needed help. We love our puppy but she is extremely full of energy. She was also experiencing a lot of separation anxiety and was not at all thrilled with delivery men. When she almost ate the wonderful guy from FedEx we decided it was time for help. I did some research and decided to go with Dog Traing Elite. We are so pleased with all they taught the dog and us as well. She just finished up her 2 week all inclusion training and we couldn’t be more happy with the results. We are still going to have 3 home visits and then can have a few drop ins if we need help. on Saturdays they have a group session that you can attend as much as you want too. The trainers were all very loving to the dogs, but firm as well. The facilities were always very clean and pleasant. I certainly would recommend them to anyone. They also do service dog traing. Having had two previous pups I thought this girl would be easily trained by me. That was not so. Thanks loads to Kevin for helping me understand the training methods used and to all the great people at Elite. I was very sensitive to make certain that the training would be pain and punishment free. The patience and care shown to train my Beagle mix 2 year old and to train me was and is outstanding. From a wild pulling strong willed pup to my compliant walking companion is miraculous. And accomplished simply with the gentle ‘tapping’ reminders, lots of love and encouragement and treat rewards. Thanks again all!

My three year old Aussie went through their in person Platinum Elite Training Camp, she is dealing with a lot of reactivity and aggression and the whole team has made such an impact on her. Kevin, Andrea and Dennis were all so helpful with my dog Nova’s training, and mine! Nova is very selective with the people she likes and she gets excited whenever she sees any of the team from Dog Training Elite. I know we will have support when needed in the future and really look forward to ongoing group classes to help keep Nova properly socialized, obedient and happy.

A huge Thank You to Kevin, Andrea and Dennis of Dog Training Elite Northeast Ohio for what they were able to accomplish in training my 5 month old pup Trace. In a very short amount of time all of my serious concerns were addressed. Their expertise was evident but more importantly to me was the kindness and care showed to both Trace and myself. I am so happy to have found them!

The trainers at Dog Training Elite Greater Cleveland demonstrated exceptional patience, encouragement, consistency, kindness, and humor throughout all of our in home training sessions. I cannot say enough great things about Dog Training Elite Greater Cleveland (North Olmsted location)! The techniques work beautifully and we noticed a huge (positive) difference in our pups behavior after the first day of in-facility training. She has kept her spunky and unique personality but knows boundaries now. They gave us a way to communicate with her, which has brought us all closer... it's priceless! The whole operation is well organized and professional, and the team is kind, patient, accommodating and dedicated. They truly love what they do... and the proof is in the results. Our pup is happy, well behaved and thriving. My husband and I could not be happier with our experience!

We were referred to Dog Training Elite Greater Cleveland because of their expertise with rescue dogs and their support after formal training. We rescued our 3 year-old Golden Retriever from a puppy mill breeder and struggled with basic obedience training. Her lack of socialization was causing behavioral issues, and we needed help ASAP. We decided to enroll her in their 2-week camp, and we are thrilled with her progress! Before training, we were anxious about taking her outside, but just three weeks after camp, we're visiting parks and even letting her off-leash. Her leash reactivity has significantly improved, and we continue attending weekly group classes to further progress. We're incredibly grateful for the team's support and ongoing help!

I can’t say enough good things about the Dog Training Elite program! The trainers were patient, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do. They didn’t just train my dog—they taught me how to communicate better with him, which made all the difference. Before training, Rolo really struggled with reactivity around other dogs. Taking him in public was unpredictable, stressful, and honestly kind of embarrassing. I couldn’t take him anywhere that had dogs that he didn’t know. He would bark, growl, lunge, and completely lose focus any time we saw another dog. I felt overwhelmed and didn’t know how to help him. That all changed when we started this training program. The trainers immediately understood Rolo’s behavior and worked with so much patience and care. They gave us practical tools and techniques that made sense, and more importantly, they worked. Throughout the training, Rolo became more calm, focused, and confident—and so did I. Now we can pass other dogs on walks without chaos, and I finally feel like I can enjoy time outside with him. It’s been an incredible transformation. I’m so proud of Rolo, and so thankful for the team that helped us get here. If your dog struggles with reactivity, don’t give up—this training truly makes a difference!

Our experience with Dog Training Elite Greater Cleveland's service was heightened by the exceptional empathy, patience, and kindness exhibited by the trainer, whose firm guidance and encouraging words propelled our dog's progress in their Basic obedience lessons. With the guidance of a seasoned Dog behavior expert, our pup made remarkable strides, and we couldn't be more grateful for the support and understanding we received throughout the In home dog training process. Our dog Stella is very anxious around strangers and we were worried how she would get along. After a few days Stella was excited to attend the training. The staff was amazing and have a great balance of compassion and firmness. We are looking forward to group classes to better relieve Stalla's anxiety, and the in home visits really help in coaching my wife and I to keep the training going. Couldn't be happier with the results. Danny
