Service Dog Training in Baton Rouge, LA

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Disabilities include mental or physical impairments that affect an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities (walking, seeing, etc.).

Because service dogs play such a key role in the life of disabled individuals, they are protected by the law. Places of residence, employment, and commercial facilities cannot discriminate against disabled individuals with service animals. If you are wondering how to get a service dog, you can either purchase a fully trained dog or purchase a service puppy and train it.

With our service dog training in Baton Rouge, LA, we ensure that your dog is trained to meet the specific needs of your disability, providing personalized support and empowering both dog and handler for long-term success.

I’m a little late posting but I can’t say enough good things about this company. From the immediate response when my little Nova was first brought home, to them coming to me for a consultation. Every experience I’ve had was amazing and every question was answered. This is the best place to train your dog. The group classes on Saturday are very informative and helpful. Nova has learned so much in the time she has been trained with this company. And let’s not forget how amazing Hannah is, she was incredible start to finish from puppy camp all the way to the end of the platinum classes, I highly recommend her, there is no one better. I’m so glad I went with this place and people. A+++++++++++ all the way around.

Dog Training Elite has been fantastic! Caring & knowledgeable staff and the difference in Rusty has been amazing. Our in-home sessions were very helpful & informative. They spend as much time as needed an answer all questions. We are now attending the “come if you’d like” Saturday group sessions to fine tune our training. The vibration collar + plus excellent training has made such a difference. I very highly recommend 🐕🧡

DTE was fantastic. Our trainer, Claire, was flexible with the schedule and made the whole process painless and fun. Our pup, Casey, looked forward to working with Claire and us! She now performs exemplary - And on command. We highly recommend DTE and would use them again if we increase the size of our pack.

DTE has helped me be a way more confident dog mom for Comet. Not only have they gone above and beyond to make sure he is comfortable and content, they really care about how you feel too. I’ve dealt with anxiety and worry over Comet’s reactivity and leash pulling seeing as he is a larger boy, but with their help we can take longer walks and handle distractions much more easily now. It’s definitely a progress but worth every minute of it.

If you are looking for a trainer, look no further. Our dog Apollo was struggling with aggression and only listened when he wanted to, he had attacked our other dog, would get out of the house and run for miles, completely uncontrollable. I honestly didn't believe he would ever be able to do off leash walking, but went ahead with the training anyway because I was hoping to help with his aggression. THIS CHANGED OUR LIFE! A few weeks later our puppy takes complete off leash walks, goes to his place when told and stays, he can walk in a heal, go into stores with us (off and on leash) He basically has a whole new lease on life because we now can let him play off leash and with other dogs. He is happier as are we. Training is expensive but it is the best thing we have ever done for our entire family

Mr Ed was so great with my pit bull Kaira! I chose Dog Training Elite after one trainer told me I had a very vicious dog and needed one on one training that I’d have to leave my baby there! But when Mr Ed came do the home evaluation he said that she didn’t have a vicious bone in her! And she and I have been living a happy life ever since!! Thank you so much!!

We have been stunned by the turn around in our already "great" dog. He is operating as a Super Service Dog for Catherine thanks to you! My daughter struggles with mobility and our big 200lb Great Dane does a great job of leading and holding her up but wasn't so good at "following her lead." You have helped her as well with a confident commanding process that was possible for her to master. From our family to yours, thank you Dog Training Elite!

It has been an amazing experience working with Dog Training Elite! Claire and Ed were both so helpful in training my dog and me. :) Any question I had they were able to answer for me. Helpful hints for car rides, recommendations for groomers, understanding behavior changes during teething, getting our puppy to stop jumping on guests and the list goes on. When we started training, our 11 year old daughter was afraid of our puppy when he started jumping, barking and biting. Now she feels completely comfortable with our puppy. Our golden doodle puppy went from out of control jumping and biting to such a fun and obedient puppy to be around. Thank you so much Dog Training Elite!

Between the E-collar and the trainers coming out to us, I couldn't recommend them more. The difference between my dog's behavior before and after the training sessions is like night and day. He's like a whole new dog and I couldn't be happier.

I have been working with Dog Training Elite with my 2 year old mini Australian Shepherd for about 2 months now. We love all the trainers we have met Ed, Claire and Jacob! I have really seen great changes in my dog Ellie! Each trainer takes their time to explain and all work really well with my dog to make sure she’s as comfortable during our training sessions! Group classes are fun to meet other people and their dogs!! Would 10/10 recommend them! Looking forward to more training!

I have been working with Ed and Claire for a few weeks now, and I'm impressed! I've worked with several trainers recently, and Dog Training Elite has been the most helpful in my current situations with my Doberman. I appreciate the fact that they don't train "by the book" and believe that training is based on each individual dog. I have been dealing with a few issues with my Doberman puppy and they have been able to observe and find the best working solutions to assist with those issues. I also enjoy the group classes each Saturday to work on distractions. It's really been great for my boy! One recent victory that Claire helped me with was getting my pup to allow me to put a vest on him! She made that happen in 1 hour during our session at home!

All the trainers at Dog Training Elite are amazing!! Our Labradoodle received some training from another group, but we still struggled with particular behaviors/situations. After making the switch to Dog Training Elite and the e-collar, our dog has soared! We are so thankful for Ed and his team!

I have nothing but good things to say about Dog Training Elite (Southeast Louisiana). I have an 80 pound, 2 year old Boxer Pit bull mix who was extremely hard to walk. He used to get triggered by everything when I would walk him and the triggers often lead to him pulling me down as he would suddenly dart towards the trigger. I dreaded walking him. I was very afraid that he would get us seriously hurt or, God forbid, hurt someone else or another dog. But the training we have received has been a literal life saver. I can now walk him peacefully and can give him commands like “Sit” and “Come” and he not only responds, but holds the command until I release him to continue. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND these trainers to any dog owner!!! They are professional, kind, knowledgeable, and their love for dogs is evident in everything they do. I truly can’t say enough good things!!

Is a Service Dog The Same As a Therapy Dog?

Many types of working dogs increase the quality of life for their handlers. The three main categories of working dogs are service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal. Each category covers different areas of support and different levels of protection under the law.

  1. Service Animal
  2. As mentioned above, service animals assist individuals with disabilities. Depending on the person’s needs, the service animal learns how to perform certain tasks. Guide dogs, for example, help blind individuals safely navigate their environment. Seizure response dogs respond to their handlers when the individual is having a seizure. Service animals are highly trained and specialized, and they are also offered the most protection under the law compared to therapy or emotional support animals.

Dogs are not the only kinds of service animals - miniature horses, pigs, and monkeys are often trained to support individuals with disabilities!

  3. Therapy Animal
  4. Therapy dogs provide comfort and improve the mental well-being of individuals in hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and more. These dogs must have a friendly, calm demeanor and be comfortable when handled by strangers.

Therapy dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks, but they must be obedient and well-mannered. Therapy animals are permitted in some areas where pets are not, but they have fewer protections than service animals. All therapy dogs must be certified before they can offer their services to the community.

  5. Emotional Support Animal
  6. Emotional support dogs relieve loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of mental health disorders. They provide comfort to their handlers, but they are not trained to perform specific tasks. Most emotional support animals are sensitive to the emotional changes of their handler and will remain close by at all times. Emotional support animals are not protected by the ADA, but residential buildings must permit emotional support animals.

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Service dogs are crucial in assisting individuals with various disabilities and conditions, providing them with support, independence, and companionship. These highly trained dogs can perform specific tasks tailored to the needs of their handlers. Learn about breeds that make great service dogs, who can benefit from a service dog and the training that will help these pups meet their handler's needs.

Service dogs are a great help to disabled individuals thanks to their incredible ability to perform highly specialized tasks, like opening doors, switching lights on and off, assisting with balance and stability, guiding, pulling wheelchairs, answering phones and making calls, finding objects or places, unloading and loading items, clearing rooms, finding help, and many more. Service dogs improve the lives of disabled individuals by increasing their autonomy.
Individuals with certain diseases and disorders can benefit from a highly trained service dog. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and they can detect the chemical changes associated with oncoming seizures and increases in blood pressure. Alert service dogs alert their handler to these situations to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Alert dogs also help those with extreme allergies detect potential allergens in food.
Disabled or epileptic individuals are more prone to emergencies than the average person. Service dogs are trained to alert their handler to a potential emergency, and alert surrounding individuals to an active emergency. Service dogs can also call for help on pre-programmed phones.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs trained to assist handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform specific tasks that reduce the potential for panic attacks or self-harm attempts. Such tasks include deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, clearing rooms, blocking strangers from approaching, and more. Service dogs trained to assist those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have greatly improved the lives of many veterans.

Service dogs also make a big impact on the lives of children with autism. Children with autism are often prone to meltdowns, have trouble communicating, and are quick to run off or become easily lost. Service dogs prevent and mediate all of these behaviors to provide a higher quality of life for children with autism and their families.

As autism is a spectrum disorder, each child has varying needs of assistance. Autism service dogs perform the following tasks:

  • Tracking: Children with autism often wander away, and a parent’s worst fear is turning their back for just a moment and discovering their child is gone. Autism service dogs will track the child if this ever happens.
  • Tethering: This task minimizes wandering, which is common in public settings. The child is tethered to the service dog’s leash or harness, preventing him or her from wandering away.
  • Behavior Interruption: Repetitive and ritualistic behaviors are typical of autistic children, as are meltdowns when the child becomes overstimulated. Autism service dogs recognize these negative behaviors and redirect the child’s attention when they start. A simple paw or nudge is all it takes to prevent a meltdown.

How Do I Get a Service Dog?

If you are wondering how to get a service dog, there are a couple of different approaches. Some service dogs are purchased outright, fully trained. Or a compatible dog is selected and trained from an early age. Training a dog from the start is the best option, especially for those with specialized needs.

Training a dog to perform service responsibilities must start from day one. Only certain breeds are suited to service work, and breeders put a lot of time into raising puppies to be service animals. Once you have purchased a service puppy, additional training is necessary to prepare your puppy for life as a service dog. This is a complicated process that involves various steps. Dog Training Elite makes getting a service dog easier with our service dog training program.

Our talented trainers can help select puppies that are prepared for a life of service from well-respected breeders. When these puppies enter the service dog training program they are closely monitored for behavior and temperament and can be fully obedience trained by the age of six months. These puppies undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs including specialized service training alongside the new handler.

This program is ideal for handlers who want to take part in the developmental years and extensive training of their service puppy.
