Obedience Training from DTE

The First Step Toward Dog Agility Training in Milwaukee, WI

Agility is a fast-paced sport that involves guiding dogs through different obstacle courses. The best candidates for this type of training are energetic, athletic dogs with a strong drive to work and learn, such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Jack Russell Terriers, and Belgian Malinois. However, any dog with enthusiasm, focus, and basic obedience training can benefit from agility exercises.

Many owners choose DTE for basic obedience before starting dog agility training in Milwaukee, WI. While we don’t offer competition-level training, our obedience programs help build key skills like focus, impulse control, and responsiveness.

Our trainers will work closely with you throughout the obedience program, ensuring your dog masters fundamental commands and you feel confident to continue agility training on your own.

Why Start Obedience Training Before Agility Training?

Dog Training Elite

Agility training demands focus, discipline, and responsiveness. Before tackling obstacle courses, dogs need a solid foundation in obedience to ensure they can follow commands, stay engaged, and work as a team with their handler.

Here’s how obedience training with Dog Training Elite sets dogs up for success in agility:

Agility courses can be full of distractions, including large crowds, other dogs, and loud noises. Obedience training teaches your dog to stay focused on you and respond to commands, even in high-energy environments.

Agility courses require dogs to pause and wait at key thresholds, such as the start line, and only move when directed. Obedience training reinforces patience and discipline through commands like “sit,” “heel,” and “down,” ensuring your dog stays focused and follows the rules of the sport.

Obedience training deepens trust and communication between dog and handler, making teamwork in agility training much more effective. A confident dog is more likely to take on new challenges with enthusiasm.

Before dogs can learn agility-specific commands, they must first master basic obedience. Training in focus, recall, and impulse control lays the groundwork for advanced commands like “jump,” “tunnel,” “weave,” and “climb.”

At Dog Training Elite, we don’t teach advanced agility commands, but our training makes it easier for your dog to learn and respond to agility training in the future.

If your dog has mastered basic obedience and you're interested in starting agility training on your own, understanding what obstacles to train for is the first place to start.

Here are some common agility challenges and training tips:

Jumps

Dogs must leap over hurdles at varying heights without knocking the bar down. In competitions, jumps can include single bars, double jumps, and tire jumps.

  • Training Tip: Start with low jumps and use treats or toys to guide your dog over. Gradually increase height as their confidence and ability grows.

Weave Poles

Dogs weave through a series of upright poles in a precise pattern. This is one of the most challenging agility obstacles, requiring speed, flexibility, and precise footwork.

  • Training Tip: Use a lure-and-reward method or guide your dog through the poles with a leash. Begin with wider pole spacing and narrow the gaps as your dog improves.

Tunnels

Dogs run through enclosed tunnels, which can be straight or curved. Some dogs may hesitate at first, especially if they are unfamiliar with dark or enclosed spaces.

  • Training Tip: Start with a short, straight tunnel and use treats or a favorite toy to encourage your dog through. Gradually introduce curved tunnels to increase difficulty.

A-Frame & Dog Walk

These obstacles require dogs to climb, balance, and descend elevated surfaces. The A-frame is a tall, triangular ramp, while the dog walk is a narrow, elevated plank with ramps on both ends. Both require precise foot placement and body control.

  • Training Tip: Use a leash or hand signals to guide your dog slowly up and down. Reward calm, controlled movements to prevent them from rushing or jumping off too soon.

I had a great experience working with Dog Training Elite. Paul was phenomenal working with and training my service dog. He worked to figure out the best way to train my dog and what works for her. After working with Paul my dog still loves seeing him and working with him.

I can’t recommend Dog Training Elite Milwaukee enough! Mary was very thorough in her initial consultation and made us feel confident that my dog, Honey’s, behaviors were both workable and manageable. Although Honey is an extremely snuggly Doberman-hound mix, she has a very high prey drive and struggled with relaxed leash walking, nipping, some reactivity and struggled to listen in general. I was worried that she was not the kind of dog that could comfortably go into dog-friendly spaces. After the very first session, we saw a noticeable difference in Honey’s listening skills and I felt a much stronger bond with her! After the 8 sessions, I now feel confident in my ability to read her body language, give commands to help her know what to do next and to diffuse potential triggers, and, I now feel confident taking her into dog-friendly spaces after having practiced with Mary. We’re very excited for group classes next!

The best money we have ever spent. We learned so much at our in home and how to handle reactivity with our cat and other dogs. Highly recommend!

Paul was amazing! He worked with our 2 year old dog Maverick, who is a lab/Beagle mix. Maverick has issues with anxiety and meeting strangers. Paul was very professional and bonded very well with Maverick and taught us how we can help strengthen Maverick's confidence along with basic obedience training. Maverick is a very well behaved dog after 6 weeks of training and I would 100% recommend Dog Training Elite (MKE), especially Paul!

Paul was amazing in helping us train our 14 week old puppy- who was a handful when we started. Over the course of training, Maslow learned so quickly from Paul and loved every minute of it. Paul also did a wonderful job teaching us how to continue to help Maslow grow! We benefited from the training just as much, if not more than Maslow. I would highly recommend Paul! We cannot say enough about how wonderful the experience was.

Paul at DTE was great to work with. He focused on the fundamentals, which gave us a strong foundation to build on. He patiently answered all our questions and worked with both our puppy and us to address behaviors on both sides. We’re thrilled with the progress we’ve made and highly recommend his training.

Really enjoyed working with Paul. He worked great with our dog. He encouraged us to work with through out the week to reinforce the training. He is very knowable and we look forward to a great dog that listens.

Mary has been training my sister's Aussie mix (Daisey) as a service dog. I have the privilege to watch and learn as well; Mary is AMAZING at what she does. Mary is very good at explaining what she is doing/why she is doing it with the dog(s). She comes to our home to train and we have attended a couple training classes in Madison, which is so fun to watch and learn! I would 100% recommend Mary for obedience and/or service animal training. It is absolutely worth it!

Mary has been great to work with. She definitely knows how dogs operate and how to teach them proper behavior. Mary’s methods work! Our 1 year old sassy AmStaff knows how to be polite now! We can even take her for off leash walks now.

Right after we got our puppy, we started looking into professional training. We came across Dog Training Elite Milwaukee. The variety of situations and learning opportunities with one-on-one and group training sessions were really cool. Although, expensive we took the leap of faith and signed up for the gold package. As of writing this, we just finished our last one-on-one session with Paul. We literally cannot say enough about the experience. Paul was awesome at training not only our puppy but us to be far far better dog parents ourselves. Looking back now, we know that the 6 one-on-one sessions with Paul were worth the entire cost of the gold package. We’re starting group classes this weekend and couldn’t be happier with our decision to work with Paul and Dog Training Elite Milwaukee.

Wow! Dog Training Elite has truly been a lifesaver for me. When I began the journey of training my service dog, Zeppelin, I never imagined he would learn how to stay calm or master commands like "place". Anina was incredibly patient, kind, and dedicated, with a remarkable "go-getter" attitude that made all the difference. I can’t thank her enough for everything she’s done. I wholeheartedly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone in need!

I am a first time pet owner at age 54. Not only that, I decided to purchase the dog of my dreams which is a Great Dane. I was clueless on how to command any of her behaviors including pooping, peeing, and paying attention. Paul, our trainer has given us so much confidence that not only do we recommend him and Dog Training Elite, we are thinking of getting another pooch.

Anina at Dog Training Elite was wonderful to work with! She showed me what my dog could be with the right training tools. She took the time to educate me in why my dog was behaving in certain ways and showed me how to correct the behavior. I cannot recommend her or Dog Training Elite enough!

We worked with Paul from Dog Training Elite Milwaukee over the last few months and he was wonderful! He taught us so much each session about how to approach dog training and worked really well with our dog, Belle. She loves him and was always excited to see him. We saw really great improvement in Belle's manners. He was really great at developing a tailored approach for our specific needs. Would highly recommend!!

Mary is amazing! My dog struggles with anxiety and Mary’s training honestly changed our lives. We can enjoy things with our dog that we just couldn’t before like super long walks, company coming over without being nervous about our dogs reaction. Mary is so patient and amazing to work with. I typically do not write many reviews but she is so worth it. Highly recommend!
