Therapy Dog Training in Katy, TX

What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is trained to provide emotional support and comfort to people in need, often visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. These dogs must be friendly with strangers, able to handle high levels of distraction, and understand personal boundaries like not jumping, licking, or mouthing. With proper training, therapy dogs can bring joy and emotional relief to those they interact with, offering companionship in stressful environments.

At Dog Training Elite, we specialize in therapy dog training in Katy, TX, helping dogs develop the temperament and skills needed to provide emotional support and comfort in a variety of settings. Our customized programs are designed to guide you and your dog through the certification process with compassion and professionalism. Whether your goal is to visit hospitals, schools, or community centers, we ensure your dog is well-prepared to offer calm, dependable companionship to those in need. With our expert training methods, your dog can become a confident and trusted therapy companion in the Katy community.

How Does a Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

While the companionship your dog brings you may inspire you to share that with others, not every dog is suited to be a therapy animal. Beyond a friendly, loving personality, several important qualifications must be met for a dog to be considered for therapy work:

  • Age: Puppies are typically too energetic and lack the focus to be therapy dogs.
  • Obedience: A therapy dog must follow commands reliably. Dogs that have completed obedience training with Dog Training Elite have the solid foundation needed to begin therapy dog training.
  • Social Skills: Therapy dogs need to naturally enjoy meeting new people and must handle being petted and approached by strangers without anxiety. Their ability to remain calm and friendly, even in unfamiliar situations, ensures they can provide emotional support to those they interact with.

I am pleased to recommend Jan as a professional dog trainer. Jan possesses an exceptional ability to guide dog owners in becoming effective handlers. His approach includes thorough explanations of canine behaviors and practical strategies for correction, fostering a strong bond between owners and their dogs while effectively addressing challenges. Throughout our training term, Jan was consistently available for phone consultations to discuss any issues that arose, and he provided insightful solutions during our subsequent classes. His commitment to his clients and their dogs is truly commendable. I strongly endorse Jan as an outstanding choice for your dog’s training needs. The success of dog training is contingent not only on the dogs themselves but significantly on the expertise of the trainer, and Jan exemplifies this standard.

Jan did a fantastic job helping train Luna. She is officially a service dog now. The whole team at Dog Elite were great. Thanks Alex, Jan, Ashley and front office! Just 7 months and Luna went from unruly, disobedient, hard headed to a FANTASTIC SERVICE DOG for my daughter. We can't thank you enough.

Exceptional experience with Dog Training Elite - Jan is Amazing! We recently had the pleasure of working with Jan from Dog Training Elite for our Cane Corso, Murray. From our first meeting, it was clear that Jan is not only a highly skilled trainer but also deeply passionate about dogs and their owners. Jan tailored our training sessions specifically to meet the needs of our Cane Corso, taking the time to understand his unique personality and behavior. His approach is both compassionate and effective, helping to build a strong bond of trust between us. Jan's expertise in addressing specific behavioral issues has made a world of difference in our dog's responsiveness and overall demeanor. One of the standout aspects of Jan's training is his ability to communicate complex concepts in easily understandable terms. He provided us with practical tools and techniques that we could implement at home, making it easy to reinforce the training in our daily routine. What impressed us most was Jan's patience and dedication. He genuinely cares about the success of his clients. With his guidance, we have become more confident in ourselves and Murray’s potential to become a well mannered balanced dog we can take anywhere. We wholeheartedly recommend Jan and Dog Training Elite to anyone in need of dog training services. Whether you have a puppy or a more challenging breed, Jan has the skills and knowledge to make a positive impact. Thank you, Jan, for your incredible work and for helping us create a harmonious relationship with our Cane Corso!

Dog Training Elite has been one of the best investments my husband & I have made. Our shepherd is night and day in comparison to where we began. We are excited to see where his training will continue to guide both him and us. We really appreciate our trainer, Jackson. He has taken the time to hear our concerns & always leaves us with feedback & ways to combat my dog Rams tendencies to rush & jump on me. We continue to be a work in progress but seeing as though I couldn’t simply walk Ram on a leash before without being dragged down the street, to him letting me to take the lead now, listening to basic obedience and continues to improve with his behavior has been a joy for us. We 100% recommend Dog Training Elite, we felt good about this decision from the beginning when we had our assessment. Again, the trainer then gave us so much insight & that was before we even decided to move forward with the training.

After getting the free assessment from a very helpful and informative trainer, Jan Hernandez, I decided to get the platinum in home training for my aggressive and anxious dog. It’s been 3 weeks and I can already see exciting improvement. Jan is my dogs trainer he is very professional and his confidence and knowledge of dogs puts my mind at ease that he knows what he’s doing. He is able to answer every question I have has a great advice, tricks and tips for training. And anytime I have questions during the week someone responds with help. I’d really recommend dog training elite and Jan if you are looking for dog training and if you have an aggressive anxious/reactive dog like me. Also side note- My dog, at the free assessment, who is 60lbs, who’s hair was sticking up, and was aggressively barking at Jan to the point of standing up (my dog was held back by a leash) Jan immediately calmed him down after meeting him just that moment! My crazy dog was acting like himself after being aggressive a second prior! It was very cool.

Dog training has been such a worthwhile investment both for my dog and myself. Everything we have been working on has helped so much to increase impulse control and decrease separation anxiety, and has given us tools to deal with his reactivity. This is our foster and I feel hopeful that training has given him the chance and structure he never had and we will get him to an adoptable place. Highly recommend!

Benefits of Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs have a profound impact on individuals’ emotional and physical well-being. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs can improve a patient's mood, reduce stress, and even lower pain levels during hospital stays or medical treatments. Their calming presence provides comfort and relief in challenging moments.

Children, in particular, often respond well to therapy dogs. The companionship and playful interaction of a therapy dog can motivate children to engage more fully in treatments, helping them overcome fear or reluctance. With a therapy dog by their side, children tend to feel more optimistic and less anxious.

Beyond medical settings, therapy dogs also foster social interaction, especially in autism and mental health communities. These dogs offer non-judgmental companionship and serve as a bridge for individuals who may struggle with social connections. By reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety, therapy dogs offer their owners comfort and companionship that enhances the overall quality of life.

ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals

What's the Difference?

Animals that provide assistance and companionship can be classified into three main groups: service animals, emotional support animals (ESAs), and therapy animals. Each has different responsibilities, training requirements, and legal protections. Knowing the differences can help you choose the right type of support for a disability, emotional needs, or therapy purposes.

Here are the defining features of each type:

Service animals are trained to help individuals by performing tasks that meet their specific needs, such as:

  • Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
  • Reminding owners to take medication
  • Waking someone who is having a nightmare

Service dogs are highly valued in the mental health and disability community and are protected under ADA laws, allowing them to accompany their owners anywhere. At DTE, we provide specialized training for service dogs that assist individuals with autism, diabetes, and PTSD.

The key difference between ESAs, therapy dogs, and service dogs is that service animals are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means they are allowed to go anywhere their owner goes. ESAs and therapy dogs do not have the same protections as service dogs, and public places can set their own rules about allowing them.

ESAs are prescribed by licensed mental health professionals to help individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. These animals provide emotional support simply by being a comforting presence. Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not trained to perform specific tasks related to their owner's condition.

ESAs can be of any breed or age, and while they do not require the same level of training as service dogs, many owners choose to seek additional training. This can help strengthen the bond between the owner and the animal and improve the ESA's ability to provide consistent emotional support in different situations.

Therapy animals provide comfort and emotional support to individuals in need. They are not trained to assist a single person but are instead taught to be well-behaved and sociable around various groups of people. These animals help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness for those they visit.

Unlike service animals, therapy animals are not required to perform specific tasks. Their calming presence is what makes them valuable in therapeutic programs.
