Service Dog Training in Greenville, SC

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Disabilities include mental or physical impairments that affect an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities (walking, seeing, etc.).

Because service dogs play such a key role in the life of disabled individuals, they are protected by the law. Places of residence, employment, and commercial facilities cannot discriminate against disabled individuals with service animals. If you are wondering how to get a service dog, you can either purchase a fully trained dog or purchase a service puppy and train it.

With our service dog training in Greenville, SC, we ensure that your dog is trained to meet the specific needs of your disability, providing personalized support and empowering both dog and handler for long-term success.

Dog Training Elite has done so much for my dog. Our trainer Sydney was absolutely amazing, our initial appointment I had absolutely no hope that my dog could even be half as behaved as her dogs were and I was proved totally wrong. My freshly 1 yo puppy (who i’ve only had for 4 months) has perfect recall, manners in public, walks in a perfect heal, and most importantly doesn’t react to other dogs. my goal is for my pup is to be a service dog one day, and Dog Training Elite has helped me see that is totally doable. I am so happy this is the training company I went with, couldn’t be happier and neither could my puppy.

Cannot say enough good things about Dog Training Elite! From our in home trainings with Sydney, to our group classes with Jared and Sydney, every experience has been great! We enrolled our little guy Colt to help with his reactivity to other dogs and people, and are just amazed at his progress! He is able to stay calm and let other dogs walk by him and get close without going nuts. Thank you guys for being so kind and for all your help!

Jared , Casey and the whole Dog Training Elite team are phenomenal. We came to them for help with our GSD and his reactivity issues and he's honestly a completely different dog. Jared ran a lot of our sessions and he is extremely knowledgeable and really cares about the success of each dog he trains. Scheduling was very easy and flexible. Overall, I cannot recommend DGE enough. Definitely check them out. Worth every penny.

From a person who never leaves a review on Google, I’m compelled to leave a very positive review for Dog Training Elite Upstate. Having spent many thousands of $$$$ for training my BorDoodle pup for 3 years, I wish I’d met Jared a long time ago but perhaps I had to go through all that other training to really appreciate the difference he has made for my relationship with my wizardly smart pup. Most good trainers can have a dog do things an owner is unable to accomplish. The big difference between short term and long term success is that now for the first time, as an owner, my dog is doing those things for me, not just the trainer! Jared knows the magic that happens when he trains the owner/handler, not just the dog. People are harder to train than a dog. As a side note, I’m an ‘’elderly’’ who has owned dogs all my life and never had to have professional training for any of them. They just ‘’did’’ what I taught them to do, that is until I met my match 3 yrs ago with this current pup. I highly recommend Jared and his team!

I chose Dog Training Elite TWICE! I have two very different rescue dogs with very different needs and they helped them and me learn to work together! One was abused and terrified of everything and I later adopted a rescue that lived on a chain. Jared and the team helped both of them and we continue with group walks now. The trainers are extremely supportive and great with the dogs! They document and video each day and go over it all and show you how to work with your dog. I am grateful to them for helping my dogs feel confident and successful! I also found that I am trainable. Ha ha! Dog Training Elite Upstate is a great resource for training your beloved family member.

We got a six month old puppy that had been “trained.” We thought great but she was very active and we had no idea where or how to start with an older puppy. DTE met with us and answered all million of our questions. We were able to start right away and worked with our new puppy. She learned quickly and has amazed us. She stays in our yard and stay on place. She walks well with our children and doing well with her commands. I was going crazy when we first brought her home. Now, she is a joy.

Jared and his staff made a big difference in Blazes obedience. He is happy to listen to commands. They made the training easy for Blaze and my wife and I to understand. Overall it was an excellent choice to have Blaze trained by Dog Training Elite.

We loved going thru this training! Our dog is just a house pet who needed some extra help with manners and managing excitement. We had tried training on our own, watching videos, using treats, etc. but hadn’t gotten very far. Jared such a huge help with everything! Our dog, Waylon, got so many compliments at easter dinner on his good boy manners! He is now able to do all of his favorite things without hassle like swimming in the lake without excessive barking and walking without pulling or jumping. I cannot recommend this program enough and am grateful we found such a fantastic program and trainer!

Bella, our 6 month old Golden, was the Queen of the house. It was our fault for not being consistent and we needed help. Bella would take things off the counter and bring them to her bed. Not chewing them up, just holding for ransom, treat. She also would hold on to the back of my robe and not let go. Someone we meet had introduced us to Dog Training Elite located Upstate SC. We have completed one on one classes and group training for the week and now we meet once a week for more group training. Where you meet great people and their dogs. Bella is amazing. She craves commands and I can’t believe the change in her. I’ve had 9 dogs and this is our first training, I highly recommend these guys. They are all great. Thank you

Dog Training Elite has been amazing to work with. The trainers explain everything they are asking you to do and why. They have worked with our schedules as well. We tried online training during COVID with another company, boarding training with another, but no one has really helped us with our anxious Frenchie as much as this team has so far. We are now excited to try group training which we would not have considered a few months ago!

With all of the Dachshunds that we have had over the years, we have never enrolled one in dog training. I have to say that we are really impressed by Dog Training Elite! Sydney was our primary trainer, we had Jared out once as well. Sydney was very professional and up beat with her training methods. She explained everything as she went along and did a great job of coaching our puppy, as well as us - we needed training on what to do as well. At the end of each session, Sydney would make sure to remind us that we could reach out to them by phone or email if we had any needs for our continued training. I would highly recommend Dog Training Elite.

Jared and his team are amazing. I had goals that I wanted to achieve with my Belgian Lance . Jared went far beyond my expectations. The team is always available to assist and answer questions. Easy scheduling.. Now Lance and I are moving on to the next step with Jared and train Lance to be my service dog. I can’t say enough of great things about Jared and his team. I will post again once Lance is fully citified. Thanks Jeff

We did a lot of research on dog trainers before landing on Dog Training Elite. We are so pleased with the team, the process, and the tools they gave us through out the whole process. We had a lot of questions during the intake process and the team was extremely helpful. As the weeks went on and we learned more about our two dogs, the staff was always there to answer any dog care related questions! They made it extremely easy to book sessions and came to our house. After 5 sessions I can confidently say both our dogs have done a 180! I look forward to continuing their training in the group classes. I can't recommend this team enough.

Is a Service Dog The Same As a Therapy Dog?

Many types of working dogs increase the quality of life for their handlers. The three main categories of working dogs are service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal. Each category covers different areas of support and different levels of protection under the law.

  1. Service Animal

As mentioned above, service animals assist individuals with disabilities. Depending on the person’s needs, the service animal learns how to perform certain tasks. Guide dogs, for example, help blind individuals safely navigate their environment. Seizure response dogs respond to their handlers when the individual is having a seizure. Service animals are highly trained and specialized, and they are also offered the most protection under the law compared to therapy or emotional support animals.

Dogs are not the only kinds of service animals - miniature horses are often trained to support individuals with disabilities!

  2. Therapy Animal

Therapy dogs provide comfort and improve the mental well-being of individuals in hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and more. These dogs must have a friendly, calm demeanor and be comfortable when handled by strangers.

Therapy dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks, but they must be obedient and well-mannered. Therapy animals are permitted in some areas where pets are not, but they have fewer protections than service animals. All therapy dogs must be certified before they can offer their services to the community.

  3. Emotional Support Animal

Emotional support dogs relieve loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of mental health disorders. They provide comfort to their handlers, but they are not trained to perform specific tasks. Most emotional support animals are sensitive to the emotional changes of their handler and will remain close by at all times. Emotional support animals are not protected by the ADA, but residential buildings must permit emotional support animals.

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Service dogs are crucial in assisting individuals with various disabilities and conditions, providing them with support, independence, and companionship. These highly trained dogs can perform specific tasks tailored to the needs of their handlers. Learn about breeds that make great service dogs, who can benefit from a service dog and the training that will help these pups meet their handler's needs.

Service dogs are a great help to disabled individuals thanks to their incredible ability to perform highly specialized tasks, like opening doors, switching lights on and off, assisting with balance and stability, guiding, pulling wheelchairs, answering phones and making calls, finding objects or places, unloading and loading items, clearing rooms, finding help, and many more. Service dogs improve the lives of disabled individuals by increasing their autonomy.
Individuals with certain diseases and disorders can benefit from a highly trained service dog. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and they can detect the chemical changes associated with oncoming seizures and increases in blood pressure. Alert service dogs alert their handler to these situations to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Alert dogs also help those with extreme allergies detect potential allergens in food.
Disabled or epileptic individuals are more prone to emergencies than the average person. Service dogs are trained to alert their handler to a potential emergency, and alert surrounding individuals to an active emergency. Service dogs can also call for help on pre-programmed phones.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs trained to assist handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform specific tasks that reduce the potential for panic attacks or self-harm attempts. Such tasks include deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, clearing rooms, blocking strangers from approaching, and more. Service dogs trained to assist those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have greatly improved the lives of many veterans.

Service dogs also make a big impact on the lives of children with autism. Children with autism are often prone to meltdowns, have trouble communicating, and are quick to run off or become easily lost. Service dogs prevent and mediate all of these behaviors to provide a higher quality of life for children with autism and their families.

As autism is a spectrum disorder, each child has varying needs of assistance. Autism service dogs perform the following tasks:

  • Tracking: Children with autism often wander away, and a parent’s worst fear is turning their back for just a moment and discovering their child is gone. Autism service dogs will track the child if this ever happens.
  • Tethering: This task minimizes wandering, which is common in public settings. The child is tethered to the service dog’s leash or harness, preventing him or her from wandering away.
  • Behavior Interruption: Repetitive and ritualistic behaviors are typical of autistic children, as are meltdowns when the child becomes overstimulated. Autism service dogs recognize these negative behaviors and redirect the child’s attention when they start. A simple paw or nudge is all it takes to prevent a meltdown.

How Do I Get a Service Dog?

If you are wondering how to get a service dog, there are a couple of different approaches. Some service dogs are purchased outright, fully trained. Or a compatible dog is selected and trained from an early age. Training a dog from the start is the best option, especially for those with specialized needs.

Training a dog to perform service responsibilities must start from day one. Only certain breeds are suited to service work, and breeders put a lot of time into raising puppies to be service animals. Once you have purchased a service puppy, additional training is necessary to prepare your puppy for life as a service dog. This is a complicated process that involves various steps. Dog Training Elite makes getting a service dog easier with our service dog training program.

Our talented trainers can help select puppies that are prepared for a life of service from well-respected breeders. When these puppies enter the service dog training program they are closely monitored for behavior and temperament and can be fully obedience trained by the age of six months. These puppies undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs including specialized service training alongside the new handler.

This program is ideal for handlers who want to take part in the developmental years and extensive training of their service puppy.
