What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is trained to provide emotional support and comfort to people in need, often visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. These dogs must be friendly with strangers, able to handle high levels of distraction, and understand personal boundaries like not jumping, licking, or mouthing. With proper training, therapy dogs can bring joy and emotional relief to those they interact with, offering companionship in stressful environments.

How Does a Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

While the companionship your dog brings you may inspire you to share that with others, not every dog is suited to be a therapy animal. Beyond a friendly, loving personality, several important qualifications must be met for a dog to be considered for therapy work:

  • Age: Puppies are typically too energetic and lack the focus to be therapy dogs.
  • Obedience: A therapy dog must follow commands reliably. Dogs that have completed obedience training with Dog Training Elite have the solid foundation needed to begin therapy dog training.
  • Social Skills: Therapy dogs need to naturally enjoy meeting new people and must handle being petted and approached by strangers without anxiety. Their ability to remain calm and friendly, even in unfamiliar situations, ensures they can provide emotional support to those they interact with.

We are so happy we went with Elite after reaching out to multiple trainers in the area. We were given different options for how to go about training; in public, at their facility, or in our own home. It made it very convenient and helpful to train in different environments with our dog. Ramiro was a great trainer, not just for our skeptical dog, but also as worrisome owners. He explained each step and helped us and our dog work together to help us be more confident in public and having visitors over. Being a rescue, our dog has a tendency to be on high alert but training has helped him trust us and relax.

Awesome experience with Ramiro! Completely transformed our dogs. Had issues with them being aggressive towards each other and with a baby on the way, we had to find a fix. Ramiro solved all of our issues. Highly recommend

Dog: Hazel, 2-year-old Shelter Lab Mix Program: Platinum Package Issue addressed: Severe leash reactivity (lunging, barking toward other dogs, motorcycles, bicycles and joggers. Dog training Elite Northeast Wisconsin is a great investment in Hazels future. For shelter dogs with unknown baggage and deep-rooted anxiety or guarding issues. This program provided a safe, effective, and transformative solution that allowed Hazel to finally relax and be a confident family member. From our very first session, Hannah Randal demonstrated incredible patience, professionalism, and a genuine love for dogs. Instead of just drilling commands, they focused on why Hazel was behaving the way she was and taught me how to communicate effectively using positive reinforcement.

We couldn’t happier with how Ramiro helped us transform our insanely hyper pup. We knew Rambo was a smart boy, but we struggled with showing him direction. Ramiro helped us mold Rambo into a focused and eager to learn good boy! Give Dog Training Elite Northeast Wisconsin a call today and your relationship with your dog will be so much better!

Ramiro was extremely professional throughout all of our sessions and a superb teacher with the whole process. Our Mini Aussie went from a non stop barking dog to a very well mannered companion. I would without question recommend this training to anyone who is looking for dog training.

We worked with my dog that was reactive and hard to control. They understand recuse dogs and how to work with them. I am impressed with the results and he passed his K9 test.

We cannot say enough wonderful things about Dog Training Elite and more specifically our amazing trainer Brianna! From the very first session, her warmth and kindness made both us and our pup feel completely at ease. She’s incredibly flexible, always willing to adjust her schedule or approach to meet our needs, and her deep knowledge of dog behavior and training techniques is truly impressive. What sets her apart is how she blends professionalism with genuine care. She didn’t just help us train our dog; she built trust, confidence, and a meaningful bond between us and our pup, Brewer. Our dog has learned so much and has truly made amazing progress, and we’ve also learned so much from her along the way. We absolutely love her and feel so lucky and grateful to have found someone so talented and compassionate. Brianna truly understands dogs and treats every family with respect and heart! We highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone looking to train their dog.

We took our Labrador to Dog Training Elite and we had a fantastic experience. Our boy was already pretty well-behaved and tempered, but we wanted to ensure he was a good listener, knew important commands, and get him used to distractions, new people, new places, etc so that we could count on him to operate well in all kinds of circumstances. Ramiro was so great to work with, Chubbs learned so much and is such an incredible companion thanks to Elite’s help. Would definitely recommend working with them!

We knew our German Shepherd had all the potential but didn’t know where to start. We were worried at 3 years old he would be too set in his ways, but Ramiro assured us that was not the case. After 8 weeks we have a completely different dog, who I feel confident walking, having guests around, and taking into public. We were given all of the tools and just had to be consistent and apply them on a daily basis. We’re really excited to continue our journey, join classes, and keep Max working. Can’t recommend Elite Training enough, worth the expense to go from stressed to confident and educated.

They helped me to absolutely transform my pup and his life. I am now able to walk him and take him out in public, which was not an option before. He also now has great house and stranger manners. With this training and the complete turn around of Duke’s behavior, i’m able to give him a more fulfilling life with experiences we would’ve missed before. Thank you so much Dog Training Elite, and especially our trainer Stephany! I am beyond grateful for all of your hard work!

We reached out to Dog Training Elite after failed attempts with trying to use a standard shock collar to decrease resource guarding. Hannah was so helpful and patient with training us and our dog, Dewey to respect his e-collar, improve his obedience with his recall skills, and even reduce his resource guarding with food around other dogs - something we didn’t believe he would ever be able to achieve! He’s still hesitant with other dogs in his personal space but has improved so much with his ability to respond to his commands to create a better peace of mind for all of us. We can’t thank Dog Training Elite and Hannah enough!

When we first began looking into training for our 10-month-old golden retriever puppy, Crew, we were primarily seeking help with basic commands and obedience. After reading several positive reviews online, I reached out to Dog Training Elite and connected with Brianna. She walked me through the available training packages with great detail and a clear understanding of our situation. The glowing customer service reviews couldn’t have been more accurate. We ultimately chose the In-Facility Platinum package, which included a four-day training camp in Bellevue, WI, along with four in-home sessions. One area we were particularly anxious about was how Crew would handle crate training at camp. He had not been crate trained at home and had shown signs of anxiety at times. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. Each day after camp, Crew came home happy and more responsive to the trained commands than the day before. The in-home sessions further reinforced his listening and obedience skills. It’s clear how much Brianna and the entire DTE team care about the dogs they train—Crew lights up every time he sees her. We’re also proud to share that Crew successfully completed his AKC Canine Good Citizen test, thanks to the coaching and support from Brianna and the DTE team. When we first reached out for training, we never imagined he would achieve such a milestone. I would highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone in need of obedience training for their dog. We’ll definitely be returning for group classes and with future pets!

Our dog Indy is a rescue that has quite a bit of anxiety and reactivity. We had tried another trainer without success and were pretty lost on what to do. But after starting with Ramiro we noticed a significant difference after just 2 weeks. Our family has noticed how much more calm and peaceful she is. We’re excited to start group classes to socialize her more!

When we started we were very anxious on if any of this would work with our dog. Im happy to say after his 2 months hes had huge improvements compared to the last two years. Although his reactivity will be a process to work through, he has learned so much from Ramiro! His walks are longer and a lot calmer then they used to be , he listens and focuses on me now instead of every distraction. We could take down our black outs from our windows and he just lays down and watches outside instead of jumping on the window going crazy at other dogs and people most of the time. Hes more relaxed and over all attitude has changed for the better. This company even has group class with all of the dogs they've trained and im so excited to take dax (my dog) to them and socialize more with being around other dogs and people. After about a one and a half sessions , Dax went from going crazy and lunging at Ramiro to absolutely loving him. Dax hears his voice and immediately butt wiggles over to him. I was weary for sure , but over all it was a great experience and we fully trust Ramiro and love the amount of care and help provided to us in this training course! If I could give 100 stars I would! My husband and I got a lot of training as well , so he trained three of us for the price of one. 😁

Benefits of Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs have a profound impact on individuals’ emotional and physical well-being. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs can improve a patient's mood, reduce stress, and even lower pain levels during hospital stays or medical treatments. Their calming presence provides comfort and relief in challenging moments.

Children, in particular, often respond well to therapy dogs. The companionship and playful interaction of a therapy dog can motivate children to engage more fully in treatments, helping them overcome fear or reluctance. With a therapy dog by their side, children tend to feel more optimistic and less anxious.

Beyond medical settings, therapy dogs also foster social interaction, especially in autism and mental health communities. These dogs offer non-judgmental companionship and serve as a bridge for individuals who may struggle with social connections. By reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety, therapy dogs offer their owners comfort and companionship that enhances the overall quality of life.

ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals

What's the Difference?

Animals that provide assistance and companionship can be classified into three main groups: service animals, emotional support animals (ESAs), and therapy animals. Each has different responsibilities, training requirements, and legal protections. Knowing the differences can help you choose the right type of support for a disability, emotional needs, or therapy purposes.

Here are the defining features of each type:

Service animals are trained to help individuals by performing tasks that meet their specific needs, such as:

  • Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
  • Reminding owners to take medication
  • Waking someone who is having a nightmare

Service dogs are highly valued in the mental health and disability community and are protected under ADA laws, allowing them to accompany their owners anywhere. At DTE, we provide specialized training for service dogs that assist individuals with autism, diabetes, and PTSD.

The key difference between ESAs, therapy dogs, and service dogs is that service animals are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means they are allowed to go anywhere their owner goes. ESAs and therapy dogs do not have the same protections as service dogs, and public places can set their own rules about allowing them.

ESAs are prescribed by licensed mental health professionals to help individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. These animals provide emotional support simply by being a comforting presence. Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not trained to perform specific tasks related to their owner's condition.

ESAs can be of any breed or age, and while they do not require the same level of training as service dogs, many owners choose to seek additional training. This can help strengthen the bond between the owner and the animal and improve the ESA's ability to provide consistent emotional support in different situations.

Therapy animals provide comfort and emotional support to individuals in need. They are not trained to assist a single person but are instead taught to be well-behaved and sociable around various groups of people. These animals help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness for those they visit.

Unlike service animals, therapy animals are not required to perform specific tasks. Their calming presence is what makes them valuable in therapeutic programs.
