Therapy Dog Training in Broward / Fort Lauderdale, FL

What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is trained to provide emotional support and comfort to people in need, often visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. These dogs must be friendly with strangers, able to handle high levels of distraction, and understand personal boundaries like not jumping, licking, or mouthing. With proper training, therapy dogs can bring joy and emotional relief to those they interact with, offering companionship in stressful environments.

At Dog Training Elite, we specialize in therapy dog training in Broward / Fort Lauderdale, FL, helping dogs develop the temperament and skills needed to provide emotional support and comfort in a variety of settings. Our customized programs are designed to guide you and your dog through the certification process with compassion and professionalism. Whether your goal is to visit hospitals, schools, or community centers, we ensure your dog is well-prepared to offer calm, dependable companionship to those in need. With our expert training methods, your dog can become a confident and trusted therapy companion in the Broward / Fort Lauderdale community.

How Does a Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

While the companionship your dog brings you may inspire you to share that with others, not every dog is suited to be a therapy animal. Beyond a friendly, loving personality, several important qualifications must be met for a dog to be considered for therapy work:

  • Age: Puppies are typically too energetic and lack the focus to be therapy dogs.
  • Obedience: A therapy dog must follow commands reliably. Dogs that have completed obedience training with Dog Training Elite have the solid foundation needed to begin therapy dog training.
  • Social Skills: Therapy dogs need to naturally enjoy meeting new people and must handle being petted and approached by strangers without anxiety. Their ability to remain calm and friendly, even in unfamiliar situations, ensures they can provide emotional support to those they interact with.

We're just getting started with DTE Broward but are so very happy with how the group classes are efficient, organized, well-run, and so very informational. The instructors are also the perfect mix of firm and patient. We've attended both the Thursday evening and Saturday morning group classes and you can see the difference in my 5-mo old dog immediately -- and we had the best time.

Marie and her team guided me and my bernedoodle Boba through canine good citizen to service dog certification. They have a true love for and dedication to dogs, and were always prompt, communicative, and showed genuine care in training Boba.

As the owner of a Belgian Malinois, I feel truly fortunate to be part of this group. The trainers have equipped me with valuable skills that make working with my dog both fun and rewarding. Beyond techniques, they’ve also given me the confidence to keep growing as a handler and inspired me to become better — for my dog and for myself

Marie and her staff are amazing. She was able to take our Vizsla through a journey that started with a shy dog full of anxiety to a bold mature girl brimming with confidence and now able to go to the busiest of places and stay focused on her work. Marie makes an incredible effort to personalize the education specifically for the dog that needs training and has incredible patience with both the owner and puppy. Through the process I became much closer to Rosie and could not be any more proud of what she has become. I cannot say enough about Marie. She is dedicated to the work needed for the results desired.

We started our service dog training with Dog Training Elite a year ago and let me tell you, we have a 1 year old dog that is highly obedient, loving, would never bite a soul and is task trained for my daughter. Not just that, included in their plans you get a weekly group session once your dog graduates from minor obedience training. My daughter enjoys the Saturday classes, seeing all the other dogs and being able to socialize with others which has been a challenge for her in her elementary years. If i get another dog i would definitely utilize their services.

I highly recommend getting your dog trained by Marie and her team. Mila had so many bad habits like digging big holes in the back yard and not listening to basic commands. Marie lovingly put a stop to all of this and now I get continuous complements about how well mannered my dog is. I can take my dog so many places with confidence now as she is so calm and well behaved. I am so grateful I chose Dog Training Elite to work with Mila. Marie is a true dog lover and dog expert which is evident from the first moment you meet her.

We adopted our fur baby, Charlie, back in March when he was just 2 months old. Wanting to start his training early, we reached out to Dog Training Elite Broward. From the beginning, the experience was outstanding, Gus came to our home to meet Charlie, and his knowledge and genuine love for dogs immediately gave us the confidence to sign up for the puppy program. Charlie’s first trainer, Nubia, was an absolute sweetheart. She guided us through the challenging early stages of potty training and teething with patience and care. Then we signed up Charlie for the progressed program, we began working with Matt, such a gentle soul with incredible patience and a clear passion for dogs. His calm demeanor and consistency truly helped us and Charlie build on those foundational skills. Both Nubia and Matt were flexible with their scheduling and always came to our home, which made the process so convenient for our busy lives. Now, as we approach the final stage we started the group classes, Gus is once again guiding us, bringing great energy, fun, and structure to each session. The classes are both challenging and enjoyable for Charlie, and we can truly see the results of all the hard work. We can’t recommend Dog Training Elite Broward enough! Charlie is still a work in progress, like any puppy, but visitors are always impressed by how well-behaved he is. Our investment in his training is definitely paying off, and we’re so grateful to be on the right path with such a fantastic team

Dog Training Elite has been wonderful. We have very high standards for our adopted teenage soon-to-be service dog and her training has not disappointed. Gus did our assessment promptly, walked me through all the steps and different course options and promptly answered all my questions. He also paired me with Matt based on my and my dog’s specific needs. We now see Gus weekly at group class and he leads those in social settings. He has a way of exhausting the most active puppy while calmly walking in very busy settings. We love his classes at downtown Ft Lauderdale. Matt found a slightly anxious but sweet dog that had a lot of energy and enthusiasm to make friends which could be a bit intimidating to strangers. He shaped her to be a perfectly obedient dog who looks for my approval before approaching a stranger and asks for pets by politely sitting at their feet. Kygs is now well received at casinos, malls, grocery stores, and more. Marie is an excellent leader. She runs the weekend group classes and makes sure no dog is out of line. We have very high standards for our dog behavior and Marie finds a way to inspire to be even better. She evaluates every dog for their public access tests and gives us, the owners, invaluable feedback about our dog’s strengths and weaknesses as well as general things to look out for in dog behavior, body language and psyche. With Dog Training Elite Broward, you can rest assured that they meet all the requirements for certifications as they belong to a chain of training institutes. You don’t get one but three layers of trainers and reviewers giving feedback on your dog so if one technique doesn’t work for you, they will find something g that does. And most importantly, you get personalized responses because once you join, you get every person’s phone number. No call centers, no waiting on the line. Bottom line is: I have and would continue to recommend them to anyone who asks me for trainers, I will use them again if I get another dog and I will continue to promote and put in a good word for them. Feel free to ask for any questions about my experience with them!

Benefits of Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs have a profound impact on individuals’ emotional and physical well-being. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs can improve a patient's mood, reduce stress, and even lower pain levels during hospital stays or medical treatments. Their calming presence provides comfort and relief in challenging moments.

Children, in particular, often respond well to therapy dogs. The companionship and playful interaction of a therapy dog can motivate children to engage more fully in treatments, helping them overcome fear or reluctance. With a therapy dog by their side, children tend to feel more optimistic and less anxious.

Beyond medical settings, therapy dogs also foster social interaction, especially in autism and mental health communities. These dogs offer non-judgmental companionship and serve as a bridge for individuals who may struggle with social connections. By reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety, therapy dogs offer their owners comfort and companionship that enhances the overall quality of life.

ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals

What's the Difference?

Animals that provide assistance and companionship can be classified into three main groups: service animals, emotional support animals (ESAs), and therapy animals. Each has different responsibilities, training requirements, and legal protections. Knowing the differences can help you choose the right type of support for a disability, emotional needs, or therapy purposes.

Here are the defining features of each type:

Service animals are trained to help individuals by performing tasks that meet their specific needs, such as:

  • Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
  • Reminding owners to take medication
  • Waking someone who is having a nightmare

Service dogs are highly valued in the mental health and disability community and are protected under ADA laws, allowing them to accompany their owners anywhere. At DTE, we provide specialized training for service dogs that assist individuals with autism, diabetes, and PTSD.

The key difference between ESAs, therapy dogs, and service dogs is that service animals are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means they are allowed to go anywhere their owner goes. ESAs and therapy dogs do not have the same protections as service dogs, and public places can set their own rules about allowing them.

ESAs are prescribed by licensed mental health professionals to help individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. These animals provide emotional support simply by being a comforting presence. Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not trained to perform specific tasks related to their owner's condition.

ESAs can be of any breed or age, and while they do not require the same level of training as service dogs, many owners choose to seek additional training. This can help strengthen the bond between the owner and the animal and improve the ESA's ability to provide consistent emotional support in different situations.

Therapy animals provide comfort and emotional support to individuals in need. They are not trained to assist a single person but are instead taught to be well-behaved and sociable around various groups of people. These animals help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness for those they visit.

Unlike service animals, therapy animals are not required to perform specific tasks. Their calming presence is what makes them valuable in therapeutic programs.
