Positive Dog Training Techniques

Davis / Weber County Positive Reinforcement Dog Trainers

Research shows that focusing on positive reinforcement when a desired behavior occurs and not worrying about correcting bad behavior in dogs is more effective and has longer-lasting results than training that incorporates punishment for bad behavior.

Positive reinforcement dog training in Davis / Weber County, UT works because dogs are inherently eager to please. Rewarding your dog for good behavior helps create a deep, loving relationship with your dog built on trust, as opposed to one built on fear of punishment. The difference between a dog who has been trained to obey out of fear of being punished vs. a dog who learns to obey through a positive, loving bond with their owner is huge.

Dog Training Elite Northern Utah trainers use treats as an initial reward for puppies and dogs learning commands. When the trainer is absent, or you’re in between obedience classes, you can continue to use treats as a reward for your dog when they exhibit a desired behavior. Dogs tend to be highly food-motivated, so this is an extremely useful tool. You can also reward your dog with a play session, take them to the dog park or anything else you know your dog enjoys. After all, you know your dog best!

As for not worrying about bad behavior – it may feel strange to act like everything is fine when your dog chews on your shoes, or goes to the bathroom inside your home. But focusing on rewarding good behavior and forgoing punishment for bad behavior is more successful in the long run.

Relying on punishment for errors and “low value” rewards, such as praise or petting are long held “traditional” methods for dog training. Punishments like flicking a dog’s nose, shocking them with a shock collar, or anything else that may cause a dog pain are unfortunately still in use today by many dog trainers.

Not only is it inhumane, but using punishment as a tool can actually backfire. For example: punishing a dog for going to the bathroom inside a house won’t teach them to go outside instead. Often, the dog only understands that the mess makes their owner mad. Instead of going outside, the dog is likely to continue to make messes indoors — where the owner can’t find them.

Punishment training also damages the relationship between dog and owner. Dogs do not understand right and wrong. Instead of associating punishment with a specific behavior they learn to avoid, as with the bathroom example, they instead learn to live in constant fear of punishment. This prevents owners from bonding with their dogs in a meaningful way.

Dog Training Elite Northern Utah uses modern training methods focused on positive dog training using reinforcement and bonding you and your dog. Our trainers in Davis / Weber County, UT never resort to punishment to help dogs unlearn behaviors. Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. The electronic collar is not a shock collar and never used to punish bad behavior. Instead, it produces a sensation like the gentle tug of a leash, and is used to help recapture the attention of a dog who gets distracted.

Dog Training Elite Northern Utah’s method of focusing on positive behavior reinforcement nurtures a dog's loving and naturally obedient nature. The method is the same regardless of the situation, whether training a puppy, an older dog or a service dog. The positive reinforcement dog training in Davis / Weber County, UT ensures training is a success no matter what your dog’s behavior. Dog Training Elite Northern Utah... has been the most fullfiling experience. Our dogs have been so much better behaved. We still have some issues but once the command has been given to the dog even if it still takes a minute for it to register; it is so much better than before. We were getting frustrated with the dogs not listening. Now its day and night with them. Oh and the best thing besides that, is the employees who work for them. They are outstanding, super awesome, and the absolute best trainers I've worked with. I had one before but with that one it was hurry and get the training done. These guys will answer with empathy, professionalism and understanding. They are a joy to be around. The money spent was the best investment I have made. Thank you and God bless them with their knowledge and safety.

I have worked with Elite dogs for almost two years. I needed a mobility dog because I have little upper body strength and walk with assisted devices. I have a 1.5 yo male lab who is bred for service. He is incredible and with the help of Elite dogs giving me back my independence. The end goal is to have him on a harness to hold me up and to fetch items for me. To that end I sought the help from Elite dogs. It’s a great program, very comprehensive, combining group play with other dogs and private lessons as well. The owner participates. The trainers are highly qualified and very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this group. Barbara

From Chaos to Calm: A True Dog Transformation ✨ Just two months ago, I was at my breaking point. My 10-month-old Chow Chow, Appa, was completely out of control—biting, mouthing, humping, and even injuring people. Two of my houseguests actually left my home bleeding. I couldn’t handle him, and honestly, I was scared. Scared for my friends, my family, and myself. I loved my dog, but I was ready to give up. Then came Colleen from Dog Training Elite. From the very first session, she brought the right tools, the right mindset, and most importantly, real hope. She didn’t just train Appa—she taught me how to lead him with confidence and calm authority. Fast forward eight weeks… and I hardly recognize my dog. Appa now sits, heels, comes, and places on command. He listens. He respects boundaries. Just this week, neighbors literally applauded as they watched him obey commands in a high-distraction environment. The best part? He’s still Appa—sweet, affectionate, quirky—but now he’s safe, social, and genuinely enjoyable to be around. If you’re struggling and feel like your dog is beyond help—don’t give up. Call Colleen. She helped me discover the incredible dog I always knew was inside mine. 🐾💙 #DogTrainingElite #ChowChow #FromAggressionToAffection #DogTransformation #GratefulDogMom #AppaTheGoodBoy

I am very pleased with the results from having our puppy attend Dog Training Elite. I honestly was hesitant at first because our pup can be a lot to handle and I didn't think she'd adjust to being okay with being away from home during the week training sessions. However, the staff accommodated her wonderfully, loved her as if she were their own dog and I'm amazed by how well mannered and trained she is now!!! I highly recommend them. Very polite, professional and above all kind to your beloved pet.

Dog Training Elite Northern Utah Training Center, has the greatest trainers. They are compassionate. understanding, and loves your pet. Melachi (mini Ausie) worked beautifully with the trainers. On a side note: We used them when they use to be Elite. John was our trainer and he helped me train our Ausie Barrion to be my mothers service dog. He was wonderful and loved Barrion. I would recommend DTENUTC to anyone who would like to have their pets trained. Our pictures This Melachi, and taking a nap after a training session LOL.

I have had a great time working with DTE-NU and looking forward to continue working with them. Not only have they done amazing with training and service, they also are very understanding and flexible. I went through a rough financial situation and they were kind enough to work with me with no penalties. It literally made a WORLD of difference in a very stressful part of my life. I have a very well trained service pup all thanks to them.

Words cannot express the deepest sense of gratitude I have for Dog Training Elite Northern Utah. Our puppy Sage was completely unmanageable. We had basically lost hope and were at our wits end, unsure of what our next step was with her. Thankfully, we found DTENU. They trained us in the art of handling our puppy. They listened to our concerns and we re always available for feedback or any questions we had. We could not have done this without Trevor, who took us under his wing and shared his passion for training and handling dogs. Thank you to Colleen, Matt, Lexie, Fona and Griffin. I absolutely recommend this company for any of your dog training needs.

A few months ago I brought our puppy a Frenchie and Boston mixed Arlo to be accessed. I wanted to know if he would make a good service/therapy dog for my PTSD as a combat veteran. Colleen the owner met with me and Arlo that day. She did the assessment and showed us what kind of discipline we could expect from the training with another of her dogs. I was pleased to find out Arlo had the right temperament for the training. He was still a bit young so we had to wait some months before he would be mature enough for the training to be effective. Colleen and her team worked with me on the costs and a payment plan. They stayed in touch and reached out when Arlo was old enough. We started to schedule his training for 3 weeks there at the center. Our situation changed and so we are moving to Florida in about a month. Colleen felt that although we could get his training at the center done in 3 weeks. The ongoing support and additional group training would not be enough time. She reached out to another franchisee in Florida where we are moving and made sure we could start the training there with them and be able to have the close community and ongoing support. I really appreciate her taking the time to make sure mine and Arlo's best interest were put first over closing a sale. I appreciate the respect and courtesy given to me in my situation. I hope these remarks help someone with their decision to place their trust in this company and Colleen. Thanks So Much For Everything! Jeremy W.

We have nothing but good things to say about Dog Training Elite. We had two dogs trained here, one as a service dog, one as a companion. We are so pleased with the results. 100% recommend this service for anyone with a dog.

We can’t thank Dog Training Elite enough for the amazing work they’ve done with our dog. From puppy training to becoming a certified medical alert service dog, their journey with us has been nothing short of incredible. From day one, the trainers at Dog Training Elite were fantastic. They made us feel comfortable and confident, even when we didn’t know what we were doing. Their patience and knowledge made all the difference. Our daughter Rainey, who has autism and epilepsy, has found her best friend in our service dog. The bond they share is beautiful, and it’s changed Rainey’s life for the better. Seeing them together brings us so much joy and peace of mind. The trainers didn’t just train our dog - they trained us too! They made sure we were prepared for everything that comes with having a service dog. Their support and encouragement have been amazing, and we always felt like we could reach out with any questions. Dog Training Elite has given us more than just a service dog. They’ve given us security, independence for Rainey, and a whole lot of happiness. We are forever grateful and can’t recommend them enough to anyone looking for top-notch dog training. Thank you, Dog Training Elite, for everything. Our lives are so much better because of you!
