How to Get a Puppy To Stop Biting? Teach them that Biting Hurts

Getting a puppy to quit mouthing is actually very simple. You just have to teach your puppy that biting hurts.

How do you teach this? By helping your puppy learn “bite inhibition.” Bite inhibition is a puppy or a dog’s ability to control how hard they bite. Typically puppies learn bite inhibition from playing with other puppies. Biting or mouthing is a common play tactic between puppies and dogs, but occasionally a puppy will bite too hard. This causes their playmate to yelp with pain and stop playing.

The reaction of the bitten puppy helps the puppy who did the biting realize their mistake and learn not to bite so hard. Just like puppies learn how to be gentle with each other, they can learn the same lesson from humans. Even if your puppy has learned bite inhibition while playing with other puppies or dogs, they still need to be taught how sensitive human skin is.

Follow the example of your puppy’s playmates. Let your puppy mouth your hands during play. When they bite you too hard, yelp like a puppy and let your hand go limp to indicate that you have been hurt. This should stop your puppy from continuing to bite you or continuing to play. When they stop, or if they attempt to make you feel better by licking your hand, praise your puppy and resume play. You can also try “time-outs” for your puppy, where you stop playing for 20 seconds after being bitten.

The goal is to teach your puppy that if they bite, playing stops. If they are gentle, play continues. Make sure to reward your puppy with praise and possibly treats when they do a good job. At Dog Training Elite, we know positive reinforcement is the best and most effective way to train puppies.

Once your puppy understands that they shouldn’t bite human skin hard, start working on teaching them not to bite human skin at all. Use the same techniques of yelping and stopping play. Over time, gradually reduce the amount of biting you allow until your puppy eventually learns not to bite at all.

Some other techniques for to stop mouthing include the distraction method. If your puppy tends to want to bite you when you pet them, distract them with treats so they'll get used to being touched without mouthing your hands or arms. Keep your puppy’s favorite toy with you, and if they starts mouthing your hands, give them the toy to bite instead.

Dog Training Elite Northern Utah... has been the most fullfiling experience. Our dogs have been so much better behaved. We still have some issues but once the command has been given to the dog even if it still takes a minute for it to register; it is so much better than before. We were getting frustrated with the dogs not listening. Now its day and night with them. Oh and the best thing besides that, is the employees who work for them. They are outstanding, super awesome, and the absolute best trainers I've worked with. I had one before but with that one it was hurry and get the training done. These guys will answer with empathy, professionalism and understanding. They are a joy to be around. The money spent was the best investment I have made. Thank you and God bless them with their knowledge and safety.

I have worked with Elite dogs for almost two years. I needed a mobility dog because I have little upper body strength and walk with assisted devices. I have a 1.5 yo male lab who is bred for service. He is incredible and with the help of Elite dogs giving me back my independence. The end goal is to have him on a harness to hold me up and to fetch items for me. To that end I sought the help from Elite dogs. It’s a great program, very comprehensive, combining group play with other dogs and private lessons as well. The owner participates. The trainers are highly qualified and very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this group. Barbara

From Chaos to Calm: A True Dog Transformation ✨ Just two months ago, I was at my breaking point. My 10-month-old Chow Chow, Appa, was completely out of control—biting, mouthing, humping, and even injuring people. Two of my houseguests actually left my home bleeding. I couldn’t handle him, and honestly, I was scared. Scared for my friends, my family, and myself. I loved my dog, but I was ready to give up. Then came Colleen from Dog Training Elite. From the very first session, she brought the right tools, the right mindset, and most importantly, real hope. She didn’t just train Appa—she taught me how to lead him with confidence and calm authority. Fast forward eight weeks… and I hardly recognize my dog. Appa now sits, heels, comes, and places on command. He listens. He respects boundaries. Just this week, neighbors literally applauded as they watched him obey commands in a high-distraction environment. The best part? He’s still Appa—sweet, affectionate, quirky—but now he’s safe, social, and genuinely enjoyable to be around. If you’re struggling and feel like your dog is beyond help—don’t give up. Call Colleen. She helped me discover the incredible dog I always knew was inside mine. 🐾💙 #DogTrainingElite #ChowChow #FromAggressionToAffection #DogTransformation #GratefulDogMom #AppaTheGoodBoy

I am very pleased with the results from having our puppy attend Dog Training Elite. I honestly was hesitant at first because our pup can be a lot to handle and I didn't think she'd adjust to being okay with being away from home during the week training sessions. However, the staff accommodated her wonderfully, loved her as if she were their own dog and I'm amazed by how well mannered and trained she is now!!! I highly recommend them. Very polite, professional and above all kind to your beloved pet.

Dog Training Elite Northern Utah Training Center, has the greatest trainers. They are compassionate. understanding, and loves your pet. Melachi (mini Ausie) worked beautifully with the trainers. On a side note: We used them when they use to be Elite. John was our trainer and he helped me train our Ausie Barrion to be my mothers service dog. He was wonderful and loved Barrion. I would recommend DTENUTC to anyone who would like to have their pets trained. Our pictures This Melachi, and taking a nap after a training session LOL.

I have had a great time working with DTE-NU and looking forward to continue working with them. Not only have they done amazing with training and service, they also are very understanding and flexible. I went through a rough financial situation and they were kind enough to work with me with no penalties. It literally made a WORLD of difference in a very stressful part of my life. I have a very well trained service pup all thanks to them.

Words cannot express the deepest sense of gratitude I have for Dog Training Elite Northern Utah. Our puppy Sage was completely unmanageable. We had basically lost hope and were at our wits end, unsure of what our next step was with her. Thankfully, we found DTENU. They trained us in the art of handling our puppy. They listened to our concerns and we re always available for feedback or any questions we had. We could not have done this without Trevor, who took us under his wing and shared his passion for training and handling dogs. Thank you to Colleen, Matt, Lexie, Fona and Griffin. I absolutely recommend this company for any of your dog training needs.

A few months ago I brought our puppy a Frenchie and Boston mixed Arlo to be accessed. I wanted to know if he would make a good service/therapy dog for my PTSD as a combat veteran. Colleen the owner met with me and Arlo that day. She did the assessment and showed us what kind of discipline we could expect from the training with another of her dogs. I was pleased to find out Arlo had the right temperament for the training. He was still a bit young so we had to wait some months before he would be mature enough for the training to be effective. Colleen and her team worked with me on the costs and a payment plan. They stayed in touch and reached out when Arlo was old enough. We started to schedule his training for 3 weeks there at the center. Our situation changed and so we are moving to Florida in about a month. Colleen felt that although we could get his training at the center done in 3 weeks. The ongoing support and additional group training would not be enough time. She reached out to another franchisee in Florida where we are moving and made sure we could start the training there with them and be able to have the close community and ongoing support. I really appreciate her taking the time to make sure mine and Arlo's best interest were put first over closing a sale. I appreciate the respect and courtesy given to me in my situation. I hope these remarks help someone with their decision to place their trust in this company and Colleen. Thanks So Much For Everything! Jeremy W.

What to Avoid

Dog Training Elite Northern Utah

There are some behaviors we humans tend to engage in when we want to play with puppies that actually encourage them to bite. If you’re at a loss for how to stop a puppy from biting, make sure to avoid these habits:

Wiggling your fingers or toes in your puppy’s face can encourage biting behavior, making it harder to teach proper play.
Jerking your hands away can trigger your puppy to lunge and bite harder—stay calm and redirect their focus.

Hitting or slapping a puppy for biting is cruel and counterproductive. It can lead to fear or increased aggression in your dog.

At Dog Training Elite, we never use physical punishment to train puppies and dogs. We focus on rewarding desired behaviors. This method of training helps build a strong, loving bond between puppies and their owners.
