Frequently Asked Questions

General
A free assessment is all about understanding your unique situation. One of our trainers will come to your home, listen to your concerns, and discuss what you’d like life with your dog to look like. Many families tell us they feel stuck or overwhelmed, but after the assessment, they finally feel hopeful. We’ll explain how our training works and guide you through the options so you can choose what feels like the best fit for your family. It’s simple, helpful, and designed to give you clarity and confidence.
Many families tell us they’ve tried other trainers who focus on techniques that rely on endless treats, punishments, or unclear communication—and they’re still frustrated. What makes us different is how we teach you to communicate with your dog in a way that’s clear and fair. Families tell us they used other methods and still struggled. What they love about our method is that it focuses on communication and trust, not just quick fixes. We address your dog’s unique needs, build their confidence, and teach them how to make better choices. This results in lasting changes, not just temporary obedience.
Absolutely! Many families tell us their dog listens perfectly to one family member but completely ignores everyone else. That’s where we come in. We’ll show you how to work together so your dog listens consistently to everyone in the home. You’ll practice about 15–20 minutes a day, 5–6 days a week, to reinforce what your dog learns and build a stronger bond. By involving the whole family, we make sure the results stick—because your dog doesn’t just live with one person; they’re part of the entire family!
Depending on the program and your progress, we typically meet with clients about once a week or so. The schedule is flexible and depends on both your availability and ours. As your dog progresses, you’ll also have access to group sessions where your dog can practice around distractions and solidify their skills. This approach ensures we tailor the training to fit your needs while keeping your dog on the path to success.
Many families come to us thinking they just need help with a few specific behaviors, like jumping or barking at the door. What they often discover is that these issues are just symptoms of a bigger challenge: a lack of clear communication and leadership. Our training starts by building a strong foundation in obedience, which makes it easier to address specific concerns and prevent new ones from popping up. Once your dog understands how to follow your lead and communicate clearly with you, those problem behaviors tend to fade away—and you’ll have the tools to handle anything new that comes up.
We could… but we’d probably need hazard pay! Husbands leave socks on the floor, wives rearrange the dishwasher their way, and kids? Well, they’d want snack breaks and TikTok tutorials in between lessons. We’ll stick to training dogs—they’re less likely to argue and much quicker to learn. But who knows? A well-trained dog might just inspire the rest of the family to step up their game!
Absolutely! Many families tell us they were worried their dog’s breed or size might be a challenge—whether it’s a tiny Chihuahua with a big personality or a massive Great Dane with a sweet but stubborn streak. We train them all! Every dog is unique, and we customize our approach to fit their needs. So, whether your pup has long legs, short legs, a big bark, or a quiet demeanor, we’re ready to help them succeed.
Yes, we do! Many families come to us feeling overwhelmed or even embarrassed because their dog has shown signs of aggression, like growling, snapping, lunging, or even biting people. They often tell us they’re worried about what might happen if things don’t change. Aggression is one of our specialties, and we focus on getting to the root of the behavior. By building obedience and trust, we help dogs learn to stay calm in stressful situations and teach owners how to confidently handle their dogs. No dog is too challenging—we’re here to help you and your pup find a better path forward.
Many families come to us looking for a service dog to help with PTSD, psychiatric support, autism assistance, allergen detection, medical alerts, or mobility challenges. Each of these roles is life-changing, and we specialize in tailoring training to meet your specific needs. We also train therapy dogs that bring comfort to hospitals, nursing homes, and treatment centers. Service dogs aren’t one-size-fits-all, so if you’re unsure whether your dog is a good candidate or have questions about the process, give us a call. We’d love to help you figure it out!
A service dog needs a calm, even temperament and the ability to stay focused in different environments. Many families worry their dog might not be the right fit, but we’re here to help you find out. Breeds like Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and Poodles often do well, but the right temperament matters more than the breed. Some service roles may require AKC certifications like Canine Good Citizen, which we can help you achieve. If you’re unsure about your dog’s potential, give us a call. We’d be happy to assess them for free and guide you on the next steps.

We have had a great experience. Expectations are clearly set. Training barriers are understood and worked within our abilities and goals to deal with any barriers are broken down to manageable steps. I always get positive feedback back each session, even when the dogs have been stubborn with not wanting to cooperate. We have 2 little kids in the home and natural chaos is welcomed to our training sessions as it is just part of life. Scheduling is easy to coordinate.

My husband and I have been working with Baeleigh for almost a month now and the progress we’ve seen with our dog Winston has been incredible! As a rescue, he struggles with anxiety and aggression but outside of that he is the absolute sweetest dog. With just a few solid weeks of training and structure he is much more calm, well-behaved and gets so proud of himself when he learns new skills and commands! The photos attached are from this week when he finally started to understand the “place” command. While we were hesitant to get a dog trainer at first since it’s such a big investment, it has been 100% worth it for us so far. We still have lots of work to do but I honestly can’t believe the progress he’s made in just a few short weeks!

We have a great pyrenees who we thought would be a good therapy dog. During our first training session, we realized how helpful the training would be for us. He was a good dog but had some bothersome behaviors. A few lessons in and our home life has changed. Baeleigh has literally walked with us through his journey in becoming a therapy dog. He is extremely well-behaved. We highly recommend Baeleigh. She is creative, positive and committed to helping us achieve our goals.

Baleigh at Dog Training Elite is an amazing trainer. She has helped us train our sweet golden girl Maggie as a therapy dog. We have been working with her since Maggie was around nine weeks old and she’s now nine months old and she has transformed so much in such a short time. We are so thrilled with the progress she has made and all the support from dog training elite. She still has some work to go, but she is on her way to being a wonderful therapy dog. I know she’ll be able to help so many people with her sweet and kind demeanor and using all her skills she has learned in training. I cannot thank the team enough for what this process has done for our family already. It’s amazing just to see how my kids interact with her and people in our neighborhood. And how she brings so many smiles to peoples faces.

Baeleigh is the best! She is so knowledgeable about animal behavior and explains everything so it makes sense. She helped me be more confident when I’m training my dog.I noticed major progress within the first month of working with her. Ranger used to pull me down the side walk and try to wiggle out of his collar if he didn’t want to comply, but now he will walk by my side, I can take him in Public without him being crazy, and so much more. The group classes are also great for exposure around other dogs. I would recommend Baeleigh and dog training elite over and over again!

We joined the program several months ago with Baliegh and Colby. They have done wonders with our 4 young and wild Staffy/Pitt mixes. We were at our wits end and debating splitting up our 4 litter mates when we made the choice to seek help. Now we have 4 girls that are happy, confident, and on the way to being well behaved pups that I knew they could be. "Bringing Structure and Connection to Every Dog and Family"

After years of helping dog owners, I’ve come to understand the challenges they face:

  • “Our dog is smart, but they just don’t seem to listen to us.”
  • “We feel stuck—our dog’s behavior is making everyday life so stressful.”
  • “We love our dog, but we need help getting them under control.”

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and I’m here to help.

I’m Steve Thompson, Owner and Director of Training. My goal is to help families like yours build stronger, more rewarding relationships with their dogs through proven training methods and a focus on connection, structure, and consistency. Growing up in East Tennessee, I spent countless hours exploring the woods with our family dog, who felt more like a sibling than a pet. My love for dogs grew as I got older, and I carried that passion with me into adulthood. As a young man, I joined the Army, where I learned the value of structure, consistency, and clear communication—all of which are essential in effective dog training. These principles became a cornerstone of my approach, guiding how I work with both dogs and their families.

From Career Shifts to Following a Dream

After a 15-year career in management, I turned to over-the-road truck driving, a move that allowed me to bring my dogs along and train them in diverse environments. This unique experience strengthened my training skills and deepened my understanding of how dogs respond to different settings. Now, living in the Charleston area, I’m living my dream: working with dogs every day. Whether it’s helping clients see progress with their own dogs or mentoring my team of trainers, I’m passionate about creating lasting results.

Family: A Cornerstone of My Life

As a father grandfather, I understand the value of patience, connection, and fostering relationships. My experience as a parent influences my approach to dog training—where building trust and understanding is just as important as teaching skills.

Why Work with Me?

  • I bring a lifetime of experience, from my Army days to my unique truck-driving training adventures.
  • I’m passionate about helping families transform frustration into confidence and joy.
  • I’m dedicated to mentoring my team and providing the best possible training experience for every client.

Ready to Transform Your Life with Your Dog?

Whether you’re struggling with a puppy’s energy or addressing more complex behavioral issues, I’m here to help. Together, we’ll create the calm, structured, and joyful relationship you’ve been dreaming of.

"Supporting Success Behind the Scenes"

After years of helping dog owners, I’ve come to understand the questions and concerns that so many share:
  • “We’ve tried everything, but our dog still won’t behave the way we hoped.”
  • “I just want to enjoy life with my dog, but their behavior is making it so hard.”
  • “How do I even begin to get help with my dog’s challenges?”

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and our team is here to help.

I’m Valerie, Owner and Director of Operations at Dog Training Elite. While our trainers are out in the field helping dogs and their families, I work behind the scenes to ensure every part of the process runs smoothly. From creating training materials to supporting our trainers and managing human resources, my focus is on making sure you and your dog have the best experience possible.

A Lifetime Surrounded by Animals

Growing up in Greenville, SC, I was always surrounded by animals. As an only child, I bonded closely with our family dogs, befriended squirrels, and even had a chicken or two as companions. My love for animals continued into adulthood, and my children followed suit, bringing home stray dogs, cats, turtles, rabbits, and even a blue-tailed skink lizard at one point!

A Diverse Career Path with a Focus on Service

Before stepping into the world of dog training, I built a career rooted in customer service. My roles included 10 years at a funeral home and 5 years as an over-the-road truck driver, where I had the incredible opportunity to visit all 48 contiguous states and most of Canada’s provinces. Working with dogs feels like coming full circle—it takes me back to my roots and the joy I’ve always felt being around animals.

Family: The Heart of My Journey

As a mother grandmother, family has always been my foundation. Whether it’s sharing my love for animals with them or supporting their own pursuits, my experience as a parent inspires me to bring patience, empathy, and connection into my work.

When I’m Not Behind the Desk…

When I’m not managing operations, I enjoy spending time crocheting, reading, exploring historical sites and museums, or attending live theater performances. Training our own dogs and supporting our team are passions that keep me connected to the heart of what we do at Dog Training Elite.

Why Work with Us?

  • We combine a personal passion for animals with professional expertise to create tailored solutions for every client.
  • Our team is dedicated to building strong, lasting relationships between you and your dog.
  • I’m here behind the scenes to ensure you receive top-notch support every step of the way.

Let’s Get Started Together

Whether you’re just beginning your journey or need help overcoming challenges with your dog, our team is ready to help. I’m proud to be part of a process that transforms frustration into joy and builds meaningful connections between dogs and their families.

After years of working with dog owners, I’ve heard the same stories time and again:

Today, I share that love with my three kids and our German Shepherd, Chief, who is truly the heart of our family.

A Balance of Family and Passion

When I’m not working, you’ll find me making memories with my kids, reading a great book, or at the gun range with my fiancé. Family is everything to me, and I’m proud to bring that same sense of care and connection to my work.

Let’s Get Started Together

"Connecting People and Pets Through Understanding and Communication"

After years of working with dog owners, I’ve heard some of the same concerns time and again:

  • “My dog seems sweet, but their behavior is unpredictable.”
  • “I’m doing my best, but I don’t think I’m handling things the right way.”
  • “I love my dog, but I don’t know how to help them thrive.”

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone—and I’m here to help.

I’ve had dogs all my life, and working with animals since I was a teenager has allowed me to experience a wide variety of personality types in both people and animals. Along the way, I’ve been exposed to many different training styles and approaches, giving me a broad foundation to help each client.

A Lifelong Dedication to Understanding Animals

Studying animal behavior in college and through additional courses over the years, I’ve always been driven to discover the best ways to communicate with our pets. When we can connect clearly and openly with our animals, it transforms our shared time into something peaceful, joyful, and truly rewarding.

Compassion Meets Customer Service

With a background in customer service, I understand the importance of empathy, patience, and clear communication. My experience has given me the skills to support not only our clients but also their dogs as they embark on this journey. My goal is to make sure every client feels understood, valued, and ready for success.

Teaching That Adapts to Every Client

With years of teaching experience, I’ve learned how to explain concepts in a way that works for each individual person—because everyone learns differently! I’m passionate about helping my clients understand their animals’ needs and thought processes, creating deeper bonds and better relationships.

Why Work with Me?

  • I bring years of hands-on experience with diverse training methods and personality types.
  • I’m dedicated to helping you understand your dog’s behavior, so you can communicate more effectively.
  • My teaching approach is flexible and tailored to meet the needs of both you and your dog.
