Positive Dog Training Techniques

Positive Reinforcement Dog Training in Port Charlotte, FL

Research shows that focusing on positive reinforcement when a desired behavior occurs and not worrying about correcting bad behavior in dogs is more effective and has longer-lasting results than training that incorporates punishment for bad behavior.

Positive reinforcement dog training in Port Charlotte, FL works because dogs are inherently eager to please. Rewarding your dog for good behavior helps create a deep, loving relationship with your dog built on trust, as opposed to one built on fear of punishment. The difference between a dog who has been trained to obey out of fear of being punished vs. a dog who learns to obey through a positive, loving bond with their owner is huge.

Dog Training Elite of Southwest Florida trainers use treats as an initial reward for puppies and dogs learning commands. When the trainer is absent, or you’re in between obedience classes, you can continue to use treats as a reward for your dog when they exhibit a desired behavior. Dogs tend to be highly food-motivated, so this is an extremely useful tool. You can also reward your dog with a play session, take them to the dog park or anything else you know your dog enjoys. After all, you know your dog best!

As for not worrying about bad behavior – it may feel strange to act like everything is fine when your dog chews on your shoes, or goes to the bathroom inside your home. But focusing on rewarding good behavior and forgoing punishment for bad behavior is more successful in the long run.

Relying on punishment for errors and “low value” rewards, such as praise or petting are long held “traditional” methods for dog training. Punishments like flicking a dog’s nose, shocking them with a shock collar, or anything else that may cause a dog pain are unfortunately still in use today by many dog trainers.

Not only is it inhumane, but using punishment as a tool can actually backfire. For example: punishing a dog for going to the bathroom inside a house won’t teach them to go outside instead. Often, the dog only understands that the mess makes their owner mad. Instead of going outside, the dog is likely to continue to make messes indoors — where the owner can’t find them.

Punishment training also damages the relationship between dog and owner. Dogs do not understand right and wrong. Instead of associating punishment with a specific behavior they learn to avoid, as with the bathroom example, they instead learn to live in constant fear of punishment. This prevents owners from bonding with their dogs in a meaningful way.

I cannot even begin to express how strongly I recommend Dog Training Elite Oklahoma for any training needs. We are using them for our service dog training. Their love for the animal and it's potential is amazing. They have been so gentle with Rose during her service dog training and in just 3 weeks she is a completely different dog! We can't wait to she her live up to her full potential and have a purpose after service dog training.

I cannot say enough good things about Dog Training Elite! From start to finish, their team was professional, knowledgeable, and so patient with my dog. We signed up for the obedience training program, and the results have been amazing. My dog used to pull on the leash constantly, bark at the door, and never listened to basic commands, but now he’s walking calmly by my side, ignoring distractions, and following every instruction like a pro! The entire team provided support and guidance every step of the way, from in-home training through group class training. We always felt confident, thanks to their expertise. If you’re looking for dog training in Southwest Florida, look no further than Dog Training Elite! They’re truly the best. 🐾

Dog Training Elite is a game changer in helping my highly distractable dog walk nicely on a leash and refrain from continually barking and growling at anyone and anything walking past my house. Learning commands and learning to place have completely changed his behavior in both of these areas. DTE has finally given me joy while walking my dog instead of anxiety. Thank you DTE!!

Dog Training Elite has been amazing with helping to transition my dog into a PTSD Anxiety service dog. Chris is a talented trainer with the dogs and with breaking down the steps for me to continue the training my dog has learned. My dog Chip gets compliments all the time for his behavior out in public especially when people learn he just turned 2. I highly recommend their services.

Chris was a great trainer and my one year old German Shepherd puppy has come a very long way to being well behaved after just five in-home sessions. She was pretty aggressive with him at first, but by the 5th session, she was showing him a lot of love. He has very good energy and he is a joy to work with. I'm really looking forward to my group training sessions in the local parks, because she still has some socialization skills to learn, and I know these group sessions will really help her with that. I'm so glad I called Dog Training Elite and I highly recommend them to anyone having behavior issues with their dogs.

We had a great time with Chris! Our dog loves him, and always responded positively to his training and guidance. Chris was energetic, engaging and had a lot of important insight for us to learn from. We hope to have a strong bond with our family pet and look forward to more enrichment with our pup in the future. This training program exceeded our expectations and was an excellent first time program for him!

Chris Davila has been an excellent choice for my dog Mini Moo and myself. I can not thank dog training elite enough for helping me with my dogs training goals. I purchased the platinum package and I would 100% recommend it for anyone struggling with their dog. I'm three quarts of the way through my training and I have been able to go on enjoyable walks, morning coffee at outside cafés all accompanied by my best friend Mini Moo. Our relationship as evolved so well and I couldn't be happier. I want to thank all of the dog training elite staff especially Chris and Denise Yenchochic.
