Obedience Training from DTE

The First Step Toward Dog Agility Training in Orlando, FL

Agility is a fast-paced sport that involves guiding dogs through different obstacle courses. The best candidates for this type of training are energetic, athletic dogs with a strong drive to work and learn, such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Jack Russell Terriers, and Belgian Malinois. However, any dog with enthusiasm, focus, and basic obedience training can benefit from agility exercises.

Many owners choose DTE for basic obedience before starting dog agility training in Orlando, FL. While we don’t offer competition-level training, our obedience programs help build key skills like focus, impulse control, and responsiveness.

Our trainers will work closely with you throughout the obedience program, ensuring your dog masters fundamental commands and you feel confident to continue agility training on your own.

Why Start Obedience Training Before Agility Training?

Dog Training Elite

Agility training demands focus, discipline, and responsiveness. Before tackling obstacle courses, dogs need a solid foundation in obedience to ensure they can follow commands, stay engaged, and work as a team with their handler.

Here’s how obedience training with Dog Training Elite sets dogs up for success in agility:

Agility courses can be full of distractions, including large crowds, other dogs, and loud noises. Obedience training teaches your dog to stay focused on you and respond to commands, even in high-energy environments.

Agility courses require dogs to pause and wait at key thresholds, such as the start line, and only move when directed. Obedience training reinforces patience and discipline through commands like “sit,” “heel,” and “down,” ensuring your dog stays focused and follows the rules of the sport.

Obedience training deepens trust and communication between dog and handler, making teamwork in agility training much more effective. A confident dog is more likely to take on new challenges with enthusiasm.

Before dogs can learn agility-specific commands, they must first master basic obedience. Training in focus, recall, and impulse control lays the groundwork for advanced commands like “jump,” “tunnel,” “weave,” and “climb.”

At Dog Training Elite, we don’t teach advanced agility commands, but our training makes it easier for your dog to learn and respond to agility training in the future.

If your dog has mastered basic obedience and you're interested in starting agility training on your own, understanding what obstacles to train for is the first place to start.

Here are some common agility challenges and training tips:

Jumps

Dogs must leap over hurdles at varying heights without knocking the bar down. In competitions, jumps can include single bars, double jumps, and tire jumps.

  • Training Tip: Start with low jumps and use treats or toys to guide your dog over. Gradually increase height as their confidence and ability grows.

Weave Poles

Dogs weave through a series of upright poles in a precise pattern. This is one of the most challenging agility obstacles, requiring speed, flexibility, and precise footwork.

  • Training Tip: Use a lure-and-reward method or guide your dog through the poles with a leash. Begin with wider pole spacing and narrow the gaps as your dog improves.

Tunnels

Dogs run through enclosed tunnels, which can be straight or curved. Some dogs may hesitate at first, especially if they are unfamiliar with dark or enclosed spaces.

  • Training Tip: Start with a short, straight tunnel and use treats or a favorite toy to encourage your dog through. Gradually introduce curved tunnels to increase difficulty.

A-Frame & Dog Walk

These obstacles require dogs to climb, balance, and descend elevated surfaces. The A-frame is a tall, triangular ramp, while the dog walk is a narrow, elevated plank with ramps on both ends. Both require precise foot placement and body control.

  • Training Tip: Use a leash or hand signals to guide your dog slowly up and down. Reward calm, controlled movements to prevent them from rushing or jumping off too soon.

I highly recommend Dog Training Elite North Orlando as the company to use for service training or in general. Craig, is a knowledgeable, caring, and patient person who helped my life change, during and ongoing, since he helped me guide my dog to become my service animal. He made me feel like I could accomplish my goals with the first phone call, listened to my issues and made changes when I needed them so we as a team could get the results I needed. He made me feel like a person not my disablities. I am glad I made the call and I highly recommend anyone looking for a service dog trainer you make the call too. Thank you Craig and his team!

We had an outstanding experience working with Craig and his service dog training program for our dog, Pluto. From the very beginning, Craig demonstrated exceptional knowledge, patience, and professionalism. He took the time to understand Pluto’s personality and tailored the training to meet his specific needs. The transformation in Pluto has been incredible. His obedience, focus, confidence, and overall behavior have improved beyond our expectations. Craig not only trained Pluto but also educated us on how to maintain and reinforce the training at home, making the entire process successful and stress-free. What truly sets Craig apart is his genuine passion for dogs and his commitment to helping both dogs and their owners succeed. We always felt supported, informed, and confident throughout the training journey. If you’re looking for a knowledgeable, dedicated, and trustworthy service dog trainer, we highly recommend Craig. Thank you for helping Pluto become the amazing dog he is today! — Yaelee & Pluto 🐾

Craig is very knowledgeable and experienced with training canines. He is also very patient with the dogs and their humans too. We chose him to help us with our rescue dogs, who were totally wild / abused youngsters. They are progressing rapidly and we are so happy to have made this investment on our fur babies. There genuine and actually want to help families and people with disabilities. We recently acquired our service dog Jake, through them and they were fantastic the whole way through. Where to start? I have APBT's and having dogs all my life, thought I could train these 2 as well. Well, I was wrong. Linked up with DTE and I have never regretted it. The owners and trainers are amazing. My pups were so happy to go spend the day with them for classes. Never once did my pups show signs they were mistreated, never. This video circulating is way out of context and doesnt do the trainer nor the program justice. Ive seen it and as an animal advocate myself, she did nothing wrong. The dog is not in pain and stopping gently on leash is a correct method. To the DTE staff keep doing the amazing job you're doing and ignore the haters and ignorant people out there that are jealous.

Our special boy was a great family dog, but didn’t always come when called. Living on a busy street, we wanted to protect him from harm if he ever got outside accidentally. We met Dog Training Elite at the Home and Garden Patio show, where many dog companies advertise. Cheyenne and Chelsea were wonderful from the first time that we met them. They had several of their dogs with them, who were so well behaved. They would respond to multiple commands off leash with no treats or collars, just words of affirmation and petting. It was obvious they loved what they do and they loved their dogs. We did an in-house consultation and hired them for 4 in-home training sessions. They thoroughly explained their training process with e-collars, treats, and positive affirmation. By the end of class one, we already had a new dog. They not only trained him, but also educated us. By booking those sessions, we received lifetime access to group sessions. Two years later, Fosse still loves going to group walks at the Winter Garden Farmers Market and group training sessions around town. He is so proud and happy to be a well-trained and well-loved dog. He is smiling every time we hang out with Dog Training Elite and their trainers. They might be as proud of him as we are! I highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone in the Orlando area and so does Fosse!

We had an amazing experiencing with DTE ! Our golden (Remus) did the platinum and is about to start psychiatric training. 10/10 recommend and cannot thank the staff enough ! Cheyanne and Chelsea are amazing with evaluating and helping you choose which program would be the best fit for you and your companion’s needs along with answering any/ all questions you may have . Logan and the other trainers that works with Remus , are super nice, helpful, and offer great feedback on your companion and ways to help you and your dog succeed in their program and dogs health! We saw an immediate difference in Remus within just 1-2 days of him training in the classes and it has boost his confidence level . He looks happier and shows a more confident and prouder stance in how he represents himself. In addition, the group classes and outings with the pack make it a great learning experience and welcoming to participate no matter where you are at training wise with your furry companion. We couldn’t be more proud and happy to be part of the DTE pack !!! In addition, this facility DOES NOT HARM and DOES NOT USE shock collars and it’s at the owners discretion on what training tools the owner would like to use whether it be an e-collar ( that vibrates/sounds) , martingale collar, or prong collar.

We had a good boy in Fosse before Dog Training Elite. Now, we have a great boy! He completed Therapy Training and loves to meet new friends and spend time with them. Chelsea and Cheyanne have been consistent resources and continue to help Fosse grow as a dog. I was hesitant to use the ecollar due to things I had read but when used correctly, it can truly change your relationship positively with your dog. Something else that I did not expect was the community that we would gain from other clients. If someone is investing this much into their dog, they are dog people. We often stay after class chatting with other owners. The pack walks are social fun for dogs and owners alike. DTE is not cheap, but we have been more than happy with the results and that has been a tremendous value.

Craig has been an amazing trainer for my golden retriever since he was just 8 weeks old. We originally started training with the hope of him becoming my guide dog, but he turned out to be the sweetest lovey-dovey who just wants to love everyone he meets! Even though that path changed, Craig’s professionalism, knowledge, and patience made such a difference. My dog learned great manners, is incredibly well behaved in public, and is always a joy to take anywhere. Craig is truly great with animals, and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a caring and experienced trainer.

Round 2 with DTE Orlando. Our first GSD has gone through their training program and was so successful that now my second GSD is in the program. All of the trainers are awesome and give great feedback on training for your doggies. Both Chelsie and Cheyenne have been there from the beginning with us and have helped tremendously. Shoutout also to Jasmine, Emily, Logan, and Brooke! It takes a Village 🥰
