Potty Training Is Where Obedience Begins

Potty training is the first step in developing a well-behaved dog. It’s not just about avoiding accidents; it’s about shaping a confident, well-mannered dog you can enjoy wherever you go.

When a mature, healthy dog understands when and where to go, they also begin to understand structure, boundaries, and how to follow through. Starting early is important, and the sooner puppies are potty broken, the easier it is for them to learn advanced obedience skills.

What If It’s an Older Dog?

Potty challenges don’t just affect puppies. Some older dogs never got the right start, and others may be adjusting to a new home or routine, or marking territory.

Before jumping into training, we always suggest ruling out health issues like:

  • Bladder stones
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Incontinence or age-related conditions

If your dog gets the all-clear from the vet, then it’s time to look at behavior. Our trainers will help you identify what’s going on and create a realistic plan to turn things around.

Many of our clients are amazed by how quickly their older dogs adapt once they understand the expectations. You’re not stuck—you just need the right tools and support.

Cody has been our public access trainer through Dog Training Elite, and he’s been an essential part of Eevee’s journey to becoming an autism service dog for our 4-year-old son. From navigating busy stores to helping us prepare for real-life scenarios, Cody’s calm, confident approach has made every session valuable and effective. He’s professional, knowledgeable, and always willing to go the extra mile to make sure both Eevee and our family are comfortable and confident. It’s clear that he truly cares and is passionate about helping families like ours succeed. He’s not just a trainer—he’s become a trusted part of our support team, and we’re so thankful for the role he’s played in Eevee’s progress. If you’re in the OKC area and need a top-notch trainer who gets it, Cody is your guy!

I waited to post publicly because the training I requested hadn’t been done before in the US that we know of. I initially called in September to talk about the possibility of teaching a dog to sniff low cortisol and alert. After explaining Kristen said she was willing to try. She gave me a suggestion on breed (standard poodle) and a list of things to look for when choosing a puppy. I picked Dolly and after several inpatient stays decided to start her training. It’s been 6 weeks. Yesterday, I felt terrible. Dolly has been alerting for 3 weeks now (she is 8 months old) and yesterday no matter what I did and how I medicated the alerts kept coming. I trusted her alert every time. After some time and several alerts, I decided to go to the hospital. This was Dolly’s first ER visit with me. She was a champion. Due to Dolly’s persistence, for the first time in years a life threatening situation was avoided and I was not admitted because I can trust her and her training. Both Kristen and David took a chance on a stranger with a rare disease desperate for help and because of that, Dolly was able to save me. I don’t know how to write a better recommendation than to say thanks to Dog Training Elite Oklahoma’s willingness to try and methods of training, after 6 weeks my 8 month old puppy saved me from a life threatening situation. If you are an Addison’s patient, it worked, trust them and the process.

Their love for the animal and it's potential is amazing. They have been so gentle with Rose during her service dog training and in just 3 weeks she is a completely different dog! We can't wait to she her live up to her full potential and have a purpose after service dog training.

Prior to DTE, Dashi was very nervous and reactive around other dogs, people, and vehicles. Treats were required to get her to do anything and we would never have dreamed she could ever be off-leash. Now, she is so well behaved and much better around all sorts of distractions. She regularly goes off-leash and is so much more confident and obedient! We can have so many more adventures now because we have confidence that she will listen. DTE was a game changer and our whole family is grateful! Multiple people have noticed that she really is a different dog. We won’t have another dog without DTE!

Look man, my day was a straight up "BREAK SOME shhtuff" day! While dealing with a family emergency, I realized, I was 30 minutes away from home and my apt started in 10 minutes! I called Kristen who relayed the message to Korbyn (already patiently waiting at my home because you know... punctuality matters... sorry again . She got a heads up that I was having a hard time and NEEDED the therapy. (I'm not crying, you're crying!) When I arrived to my home, 40 minutes later; (I said sorry...) Korbyn sensed my stress/anxiety and informed me that she enjoyed the views my Homefront offer. She just told me if I needed some time to center or grab a drink she would sit right there and enjoy the view. INSTANT relief. Despite my tardiness, she ensured I understood every aspect of the information she provided me. I even had a breakdown moment in front of this young lady y'all. There is not a single, tiny little thing I can say negative about her. I am HONORED to post this. ~ Adam

What Works: Potty Training Tips from Real Trainers

Have you ever wondered how to potty train a puppy? Here are a few of the tried-and-true techniques our trainers use every day to set dogs up for success (and that you can start using right now):

Dogs thrive on routine. Take your puppy to the same quiet area each time they go out, and keep them on a leash to help them focus on the task at hand.

Trainer Tip: Use the same door and same path each time. It helps your pup learn the rhythm and makes success more predictable.

Puppies need frequent breaks. As a general guideline, take them out:

  • After naps
  • After play or excitement
  • Immediately after eating or drinking

The goal is to stay ahead of the accident—not scramble to clean it up after.

Many families tell us that crate training changed everything. And they’re not wrong.

Dogs instinctively avoid going to the bathroom where they sleep—but only if the crate is the right size. Too big, and they might go in one corner and sleep in another. Just right, and they’ll learn to hold it. Always take your dog outside immediately after letting them out of the crate to reinforce good habits.

Pick a simple phrase like “go potty” or “do your business,” and say it when your dog is going. Eventually, they’ll associate the phrase with the action.

This might feel like a small thing now, but it will be helpful in the long term, especially for service dogs. Many of our service dog families tell us that teaching this cue makes things much smoother on busy mornings, while traveling, or before entering public spaces.

We don’t mean “good dog” and a pat. We mean celebrate your puppy’s success like you just won the lottery. Clap, cheer, and praise enthusiastically, especially in the early days.

Positive feedback builds the confidence your pup needs to repeat the behavior again and again.

Watch for signs like sniffing, circling, whining, or suddenly going quiet. These are your cues to grab that leash and head out fast.

Interrupting the behavior early is one of the most effective ways to build new habits and reduce (and eventually eliminate) indoor accidents.
