Dog Training Techniques

Classical Conditioning Dog Training in Cincinnati, OH

Classical conditioning is a learning process also known as the Pavlovian method or respondent conditioning. Discovered by Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov, classical conditioning involves developing automatic reflexes to specific conditions. This leads to creating behaviors.

Pavlov is considered to be the father of “classical conditioning.” As a matter of fact, he originally tested his theory using dogs. In an experiment, Pavlov observed dogs began to salivate not just when they received food, but when the people associated with feeding them arrived. Pavlov began to ring a bell when the dogs were presented with food. Over time, the dogs learned to associate the sound of the bell ringing with food. Their mouths would salivate whenever the bell rang.

Dog Training Elite Greater Cincinnati dog training techniques are based on classical conditioning dog training in Cincinnati, OH to help your dog achieve deep-rooted obedience. Working with a Dog Training Elite Greater Cincinnati trainer , your dog will become conditioned and develop those “automatic reflexes” to commands such as sit, down, heel, break, and more.

Training With An E-Collar

Dog Training Elite Greater Cincinnati NEVER uses punishments like shock collars to train dogs out of bad behavior. Dog Training Elite in Cincinnati, OH does make use of an electronic collar. The use of an electronic collar is vastly different in two main ways.

The electric collar does not shock your dog. Instead, it generates a gentle electronic pulse, similar to the tug of a leash.
The electronic collar is never used to punish a dog. It is used to simply gain the attention of a dog and help them focus on the task at hand.
Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective.

Positive Reinforcement Vs. Punishment

Traditional dog training methods rely on punishment for errors and “low value” rewards, such as praise or petting, when a dog performs a desired behavior. Dog Training Elite Greater Cincinnati never resorts to punishing a dog to make them unlearn bad behavior.

Using punishment as a tool can actually backfire. For example: punishing a dog for going to the bathroom inside a house won’t teach them to go outside instead. Often, the dog only understands that the mess makes their owner mad. Instead of going outside, the dog is likely to continue to make messes indoors - but where the owner can’t find them.

Research shows that focusing on positive reinforcement when a desired behavior occurs and not worrying about correcting bad behavior in dogs is more effective and has longer-lasting results. The difference between a dog who has been exposed to dog training techniques used to obey out of fear vs. a dog who learns to obey through a positive, loving bond with their owner is huge.

Positive reinforcement works with dogs because they are inherently eager to please. Rewarding your dog for good behavior as you work with a Dog Training Elite in Cincinnati, OH trainer to help your dog be more obedient will help you create a deep, loving relationship with your dog built on trust.

We were preventing our Golden Retriever from living her best life: she has a STRONG drive to visit with any human or dog within 100 yards. Her urges put her in many unsafe situations with moving traffic and uncomfortable non-dog lovers. After an unsuccessful session of obedience school, we took a leap of faith investing in DTE. We are so glad we did, and after a few short weeks with the team, our dog's potential became so obvious that we pursued a therapy certification. Now we have the ability to bring joy to others in nursing homes and schools while allowing our dog to do her heart's desire: visit with others. People are amazed at her behavior and compliment us often. And, I no longer worry about her darting across the street on our daily 1 mile off-leash walks! The investment was SO worth it!

Dog Training Elite (Scott and Jen) are truly exceptional. They are knowledgeable, down-to-earth, practical, and incredibly supportive throughout the entire training process. We just completed their puppy courses and now feel confident that our puppy has a strong foundation for the next stage of training. What sets them apart is not only their expertise, but also their kindness, patience, and genuine care for both the dogs and their owners. They are trustworthy, encouraging, and clearly passionate about what they do. Every session was organized, helpful, and tailored in a way that made training feel manageable and successful. I truly can’t say enough positive things about Scott, Jen, and the services they provide. We are so grateful for everything we learned and highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone looking for high-quality, effective dog training.

Scott has been a great trainer to work with and is willing to take the time to work through things to help me get it right when I work with Toby. I have noticed an overall improvement and feel more confident on the work I am doing between sessions.

Scott was absolutely amazing! Patient, kind, and knowledgeable. My dog had a biting incident and while most would've thought this dog needs major help, Scott met with him and saw my dog just needed a few minor corrections and not some overly expensive, drawn out training program. Couldn't recommend someone better!

Fantastic experience with Scott and Jen! Helping us take back the control of our middle aged dogs at our own home where the behaviors are seen naturally. No boarding or over charging, honest and fair estimates. And giving you and your dog their full attention at every session, moving at the pace you are comfortable with. It’s never too late to teach your old dogs new tricks with their help!

This training program not only works it makes sense to both my dog and I! Yes most people can have relatively good dogs on their own. (I had 3) However-WOW, you don’t realize the true potential of your dog until you are in this program. I am definitely regretting skipping professional training with my first 3 pups!!! Augie and I are loving this program and can’t wait to start our journey as a therapy team.

I’m basically a fangirl when it comes to Jen and Scott!! 😂 I truly cannot say enough wonderful things about them! They’re so knowledgeable, helpful, patient and, most of all, their kindness and passion for dogs is so genuine and makes it so easy to build a bond with them through your dog!! I have never used professional training with my past rescues but Mabel is a one-of-a-kind, fluffy, energetic, snuggly, chaotic force that will not hesitate to lick inside your ear or eat every shoe you’ve ever owned. In just a few short weeks, my rescue puppy, Mabel Rae, has transformed!! I knew from reviews that the program would be beneficial for me and Mabel but it was so much more than I could have imagined! They are so flexible and accommodating with training packages, scheduling, etc. They personalize each experience to your dog and your specific needs and goals. I’m just so genuinely happy, Mabel seems to enjoy the structure, as well as all of the edible rewards when she does well! I’m honestly not sure who looked forward to our weekly sessions more - me or Mabel! I just cannot recommend them enough! You won’t regret it!! (see, I told you I would be fangirling!) Thank you, Jen & Scott!!

I worked with DTE from the very start of my service dog journey. Finding those willing to help train a PTSD service dog for non veterans was excruciatingly difficult to find. Finding Jen, Scott and the crew was an absolute godsend. From day one, they sat down with me and discussed what I needed, what I was looking to accomplish and my goals. From there, we decided together that a Doberman was in my best interest for work. For the next couple of months, we worked together to find a breeder who had suitable service dog prospects. Then, as soon as she was able to come home, Sprout began training! After months of training (and continual refresher support now), Sprout has blossomed into my best friend and integral support. I used to never be able to leave the house, and just yesterday, me and Sprout went out for lunch, alone! Through their continual support and guidance, I've become a more confident handler and independent person. Sprout has evolved into a loving, sweet natured and well behaved working dog. She is absolutely amazing. Highly recommend DTE for anyone looking to better themselves, or their dogs!
