Restoring Independence with Medical Response Dogs

Epilepsy affects approximately 3.4 million Americans and can significantly impact their daily routines. Many individuals with epilepsy avoid going out in public due to the fear of seizures and the potential risks, such as falling or injury. This leads to a loss of independence and a reduced quality of life. Fortunately, service dogs trained specifically for epilepsy can provide critical support.

Medical Response Dogs with Augusta / Aiken seizure alert dog training alert their caretakers and those nearby of an imminent seizure, helping prevent falls and injuries. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), individuals with epilepsy can bring their service dogs into public spaces, empowering them to regain independence and improve their quality of life.

Medical Response Dogs can detect changes in a person’s scent that occur just before a seizure, allowing them to warn their caretakers in advance. This early warning can provide enough time to seek safety and avoid injury. Almost any dog with the right temperament can be trained to perform these tasks.

If you or a loved one suffers from epilepsy, a specialized Medical Response Dog training program can be life-changing. Dog Training Elite offers programs tailored to train dogs as Medical Response Dogs, providing vital assistance to those living with epilepsy.

For specialized training, it is best to start with puppies. Our Medical Response Dog training program is intensive and prepares your dog for a life of service.

Service dogs must have a calm temperament and they must be first trained in obedience. Dogs that have aggressive, shy, or disobedient characteristics cannot be service dogs. After completing obedience programs, service dogs must undergo specialized skill training. An expert assessment will determine whether or not the dog is suited for medical alert services at this point. If so, they dog will be trained to detect oncoming seizures and warn the individual. Response dogs warn their caretakers in various ways, including: barking, close eye contact, pawing or licking, and or circling. Additional behaviors can be taught to protect the caretaker, such as breaking a fall by standing behind the individual, turning on lights or opening doors, and alerting others to the situation.
